If you are adding shapefile data directly to a web map, then you will need to upload your data again. If you purchase an ArcGIS Online subscription, you can create a web service out of your data. Currently, you can edit this data on the server from desktop, web and mobile clients. We're working on database synchronization, but that feature is not there for the initial release. Thanks, Mike

I too am unable to configure popups against your uploaded dataset. It also seems to prevent configuring popups against other layers in the web map. Can you try adding the shapefile alone (perhaps you did already)? The problem appears to be specific to this dataset. We'll have to investigate it further. My guess is that there is a file parsing error as there is a lot of data in this txt file. You might also want to try to use quotes on some values. It seems like the column with parenthesis is not working correctly... Thanks, Mike

Yes, Identify is supported against WMS Services in ArcGIS Desktop that have the GetFeatureInfo capability. However, there are no plans to support this in ArcGIS Online. Thanks, Mike

You can't have a folder in your zip file. The assorted shapefile files should be at the top level of the zip file. Thanks, Mike

I've documented the problem and we'll have to fix it. As a workaround, you could add a field to your data and make the value for all records 1. Then use this field for normalization. Mike

If you're talking about the topo basemap, there is no way to determine the quad date. We don't maintain that information. This service was created a few years ago with the data available at the time. It has not been updated since and there are no plans to update it. Mike

If you put all the attributes in the shapefile, the map viewer does allow editing of the features and attributes. So, it is possible that your friend can learn arcgis.com, they may be able to accomplish what they need on their own. Thanks, Mike

Gavin, In your case is seems like having a public ArcGIS server is the best solution. You would conrol the data on the server. If that server is pointing to your local data, then any changes made to it would be reflected in the web services that point to it. Thanks, Mike

Beth, Those are map services (note the MapServer part of the URL). Editing is not supported on map services. You need to explicitly publish a feature service. I don't believe 9.3 has the ability to publish feature services, however. You'll need to upgrade your server. Thanks, Mike

If your goal is simply to symbolize features based on the yes/no field attribute, you can do this by symbolizing the shapefile inside the web map. If you need a set of related attributes of the shapefile features, you would need to add these directly to the shapefile as fields. This method would only support 1 to 1 relationships, really, unless you added multiple fields for multiple relationships. Hope this helps, Mike

I may have spoke too soon... What I described above is how it is going to work when we next update the website. I think now, it's where you first created the map or where you last saved it. I'm not positive here though. In general, moving foward, we will more often be opening web maps in arcgis.com by default rather than Explorer Online. Thanks, Mike

If a font is flagged as "embeddable" it will get packaged up in the service definition. When the cache is created on the server, the map will draw with the appropriate font. Of course if a font is not embeddable, it will not be packaged in the service definition and will not look right in the resulting cache. Thanks, Mike
