Hi We've been using ArcGIS Mobile 10 for a few months, but are now looking at using 10.1.1. We have already noticed some changes between 10 and 10.1.1, one of which is that when we create and save/save as a project in Mobile Project Center that contains local (pre-created) mobile caches, these caches are duplicated/copied to a new directory. The mobile caches we are using total nearly 14GB, so it's very annoying that MPC is making copies of these when all we want is to generate a project (amp) file to go with the existing caches. Does anyone know of a way to turn this off? I can't see anything in the settings. Regards John

Hi I'm using the latest JavaScript Basic Viewer and have hooked up the print task to a custom print service that was created using the Export Web Map tool (as per the help). I have set up a very basic A4 portrait template with just a single data frame and this prints fine from the viewer print task. My problem is, that when I set up other more complex layouts, like an A3 landscape with some graphics and text added, the resulting print contains the graphics etc, but the map is missing. I've tried various layouts and can't get anything but a basic one to work. Anyone got any idea why the map isn't printing? We are using PDF as the export type and the services are all in ArcGIS Server 10.1 and have no security set (i.e. are public). Regards John

No we didn't figure it out - after working with ArcGIS for Windows Mobile for some months now, we have found it to be very buggy. Both the applications and tools crash regularly and give no useful error information. To work around this one, we generated local caches using the Create Mobile Map tool and used these to configure the mobile project and export an amp file. We then added the service URL into the amp file manually for each cache that required sync-ing. For example: <MobileCache cacheDirectory="MobileTest" mobileServiceUrl="<serverURL>/ArcGIS/Services/MobileTest/MapServer/MobileServer" webClientProtocolType="BinaryWebService" checksum="1934700168"> Hope that helps John

OK - after some more trial and error experimentation I managed to identify the two layers that were at the root of the problem. These actually showed settlement names (labels) with no symbols. However, they both had unique value rendering set, but no classes defined. I set these both to use a single symbol with no colour/outline and re-published - now the labels display as expected in the cache. It would be useful if the logs had reported what the problem was as it would've saved me a couple of hours work. Still it's working now.

Hi I've created a cached map service and for a couple of the scales the labels have not come through in the cached tiles. When using the same mxd to create an un-cached service, the labels are drawn when viewing at the same scales. I've tried simplifying the labels but this has not made any difference. I've also turned on verbose logging and there are no errors/warnings in the log when after re-creating the tiles. Has anyone seen this behaviour? I've now wasted a few hours messing about trying to fix it, so any previous experiences with labels in cached map services would be greatly appreciated. I don't really want to have to create annotation, as the services uses pre-defined data from a supplier which we don't wish to manipulate if we can help it. We are working with ArcGIS Server 10.1 sp1 on Windows Server 2008 R2. The data is coming from local file geodatabases on the server. Regards John

Just to update my previous comment with the full weight of a major utility in the UK. Severn Trent Water have asked for flow arrows on Sewer assets, as they have in all other Esri based GIS solutions that have been implemented. It has been difficult to inform them that this isn't supported and requires customisation. Again, it seems like quite a basic requirement for any utility-based mobile GIS solution, for which there is a big market in the UK and around the world.

Yes - directional arrows (line decorations) are a frequent requirement in the utilities sector, which is a major user of mobile solutions. It should not be necessary to customise in order to get this working in the ArcGIS for windows mobile solution.

Once an annotation feature class is created and the reference scale set, the reference scale cannot currently be altered (it is permenantly greyed-out in the properties). Quite often it is necessary to change the reference scale and this currently involves creation of a new annotation feature class with the desired reference scale and then loading of features from the current annotation feature class. It would be much more straightforward if the reference scale could be altered (as per other schema level changes - requiring a lock and correct privileges) once the annotation feature class has been created.

I'm currently having issues using either of the Mobile geoprocessing tools (Create Mobile Map and Synchronize Mobile Map) on one particular server. The tools work fine for other users on this server and for me on other servers. If I user the Create Mobile Map tool, as soon as I select the mxd to use, the following error is displayed: ERROR 000584 Implementation of this Tool's Validate is invalid. Similarly, as soon as I open the Syncronize Mobile Cache tool the same error is displayed. I have tried clearing out my local and roaming profile (eg. users\<username>\appdata\roaming\ESRI) and this makes no difference. I've also tried removing and re-adding the mobile toolbox tools. I am an admin on the server and have full control on the directory structure where the mxds, caches etc are stored. Anyone have any idea as to why it's not working or what might cause this error message? Regards John

Hi I'm having some problems adding an operational map layer from an ArcGIS Server mobile service. The service is created ok in ArcGIS Server and is working correctly when viewed in ArcMap. However, when I go to Add the service in mobile project center, I get the following error message after about 30 seconds: Error: The operation has timed out If I look at the server logs, they suggest that server has processed the request ok (i.e. it says "Binary request successfully processed") and there are no errors in the log. I can also successfully add other services from this ArcGIS Server without issue. So - what is causing the time out? Is there a setting to increase the time out? Why doesn't Esri software provide you with enough information in the error message to fix issues like this? If anyone has any ideas, they'd be most appreciated. I've already wasted half a day trying to get it working. Stuff like this should be simple, so why do Esri make it so difficult? Regards John

Currently (at v10.1) it is not possible for an editor to related multiple selected features to a single table record without having to drill-down to each feature in the attribute editor and then choose 'Add Selected'. This is not efficient where a large number of features are required to be related to a single table record. For example, a single owner owns multiple (hundreds of) land parcels - so the editor needs to relate these by selecting the record in the OWNER table and selecting the land parcels on the map (in the LANDPARCEL feature class). The editor currently has to go to each feature in the attribute editor drill-down to the related table, right-click and choose 'Add Selected'. It would be much better (and I was expecting this function to exist already) if the editor could either: 1) Right-click on the selected table record, choose the related feature class and then choose 'Add Selected' to relate any selected feature on the map to the currently selected table record. or 2) Select a record in the table, then in the attribute editor select multiple features, right-click and choose 'Add Selected' Without customisation there currently appears to be no way to acheive this efficiently from an editor perspective. It is surely a relatively simple change, as the underlying relationship model already exists.

Yep - shortly after posting my original question I did exactly that - exported the feature class schema as xml, imported the schema into 10.1 SDE and then loaded the data using the Simple Data Loader. This still reported the same geometry errors, but continued loading the remaining data. I still don't fully understand why these features fail to load having been sourced from SDE and also after running Repair Geometry. They are line features and surely the minimum number of parts for a line is 1, or maybe even 0 for a null geometry. I'd still be interested if anyone explain what this error is likely to refer to?
