Hey, what do you know? I put 10.2.1 on this PC, and the Geotagged photos to points tool just ran through all the photos in the directory without error. I don't know what was going on before. I wonder how I might hand this new photo point FC back to the guy so that the paths in the Path item will be correct, maybe relative rather than absolute paths? Update: I don't have to correct the paths. If you check the box "Add Photos as Attachments" adds the photos to the geodatabase as blob items and relates them to the points. I should read the tool help more often. However, I will have to dumb down the geodatabase back a couple revs so the guy can read use it. Update 2: Hey, it turns out this was a somewhat known bug in 10.2, perhaps triggered in my case by a non-georeferenced photo in the directory: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/92246-GeoTagged-Photos-To-Points-ERROR-999999-Error-executing-function.?highlight=geotagged

My latest idea on this is to download VLC media player and use VLC to video capture the whole ArcScene app running a time animation. Then the current date is visible in ArcScene's time slider. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP3LAaMHUA4 This would work to get current date displayed in Tracking Analyst as well. Takes the whole video capture process out of the hands of ESRI products.

I'm trying to help a guy with photos from his Nikon Coolpix P6000 that are supposedly geotagged. I told him at first I'd just run them through the GeotaggedPhotosToPoints tool in Arc Desktop 10.2, but each time I try this I can only get the very unhelpful Error 999999 and "Failed to execute" I set up the tool to take all the files from his directory and put the output FC into a new 10.2 file geodatabase. Examining the directory I was given, each phot has a jpg, a aux.xml file that seems to contain just some metadata parameters, and an .ovr that seems to be a pyramid file. I don't see where the coordinates are stored. I wonder if he hasn't set up his camera correctly to geotag his photos, or is this format not recognized by Arc Desktop. Update: Nikon has a photo viewing utility ViewNX2 that shows the coordinates and a map with photo locations for almost all these photos. I just don't see where these coordinates are stored, and apparently, neither does GeotaggedPhotosToPoints. Update 2: The Coolpix P6000 pdf manual says files are "DCF, Exif2.2, and DPOF compliant" (p.211) EXIF is supposed to be the format The ArcMap tool is looking for.

ESRI support confirmed that this is a bug or omission in ArcScene and ArcGlobe. http://support.esri.com/en/bugs/nimbus/TklNMDkyMTc5 However, there may be a way to add dates later to the animation with something like iMovie as in this Tracking Analyst presentation: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/55305-How-to-make-faded-trails-on-time-slider?p=195663#post195663 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdI5o_8b9RE

I was asked to find ways to present test well depth data, to help visualize the changes in water table over time. I now have some pretty good looking time enabled maps in ArcScene 10.2 using a DEM, a hill shade. and extruding the well points with a (negative scaling constant * well depth). I was thinking about trying a video capture of the time animation with the observer positioned below the ground surface, but I haven't figured out how to show the current data frame time in a label in ArcScene like I have done in ArcMap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F4XFcJuGJ0 These guys (http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/78045-raster-catalogs-in-arcscene-and-setting-base-height) seem to have done it in ArcScene but can't get the date stamps to work with ArcCatalog data.

I made some maps in my account to help some contributing agencies that can't get desktop ArcGIS. I made the account and maps before the account policy change of March 2013. I was able to sign up for free, create a user group and restrict the maps to this group. After the account policy change, I was unable to make new non-public maps but I could still modify my old maps and my old maps still seem to be non-public. Recently, I was getting pressure from USFW about making sensitive ESA data vulnerable to hacking and public display by having any kind of web access. I responded that often the biggest security weak points in these efforts is personnel. Do we trust our personnel not to leak representations of this data? If not, the ArcGIS Online map is not our problem. We'd better keep researchers away from this species as well, and hope for the best for its recovery. But it left me wondering, how secure are the ArcGIS Online Groups? Especially for an account like mine that seems to only have non-public maps because the account was set up before March 2013. Have there been successful hacks?

I had to remake a map with shape file imports because my local ArcServer is down. It contains some sensitive info from some other agencies. I reassured them that I could make the map only visible to our group, not the public, like last year. So why am I getting this message when I try to adjust the maps sharing? : "Items owned by a Public Account must be shared to everyone before sharing to a group. " I have other maps in my account that are not shared with everyone. Did my account type get modified since the last time I saved these maps?

Hey, great. After I installed pywin32, win32com was available to IDLE as well. I was able to read a value from a Excel 2013 file with a simple test script: # Test to see if ws32com can read a Excel 2013 spreadsheet
# testcomread.py
# import the Dispatch library, get a reference to an Excel instance
from win32com.client import Dispatch
import os
xlApp = Dispatch("Excel.Application")
# Set the Excel file name, working directory and path
old_file_name = 'Excel2013.xlsx'
working_dir = r"C:\Users\Paul\My Documents\pyscripts\Office" + os.sep
old_file_path = os.path.join(working_dir, old_file_name)
xlBook = xlApp.Workbooks.Open(old_file_path)
# make Excel visible (1 is True, 0 is False)
xlApp.Visible=1
# get a reference to the first sheet
xlSheet = xlBook.Sheets(1)
# extract the value from a cell
a_value = xlSheet.Cells(1,1).Value
print a_value Why couldn't I have found win32com when I started? Can win32com run in a Linux install of Python?

I'm currently without an ArcServer to serve out time enabled map services, so I got interested in seeing how well Explorer Online works with time enabled data. I time-enabled a test shapefile on ArcMap locally to make sure it worked, and although I can compress and drag the compressed shapefile into Explorer Online, I guess that there's no way Explorer Online sees the shapefile as time enabled. The docs for Explorer Online http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisexplorer/help/index.html#/Display_data_from_a_specific_time_span/015600000004000000/ say "When the map contains a layer based on a time-enabled map, image, or KML based service, the Time Navigator will be shown at the bottom of the map." Well, no Time Navigator shows up for me. The online help seems to only mention time-enabled services. I guess I'm going to have to get ArcServer going again.
