Yes, the prj files of the bad shapes open like they are binary, the prj files from good files open as readable text. Poor guy, the whole USB drive is a mix of some good shapefiles and geodatabases, but a lot of bad ones. He thought this USB drive was his reliable backup. It's a WD My Book.

I opened several dbf files with OpenOffice Calc, which presents dbf as a spreadheet. The bad shapefiles' dbfs opened are binary junk, while the good shapefiles' opened as one line containing a filed definition Name,C,50. Looks like the user has more bad luck than just his HD crash.

I tired the USB drive on a different Win 7 64 bit machine, also running Desktop 10.2.2. Same behavior, same shapefiles bad, reading from the USB or copied to the different machine's hard drive. Owner is set to Everyone in all the shapefile component files that I have examined. Here's a zip file containing one bad shapefile CowicheRegion, and one good shapefile from the same folder.

I finally got a shot to investigate this while the user is away today. This is a strange one. If you look at the Cowiche folder, for example, in catalog, you see that some shapefiles are being good, some have the ? mark. Looks like a green question mark to me. The user told me blue. Look at the cowiche folder in windows and the good and the bad shapefiles look like they have all the component files they need. Don't know why he has .cpg files instead of .shp.xml files, but the good shapefiles have this too. CowicheAccessPts. is missing a .sbn, but the other shapefiles have it. And the geodatabase CowichePhoto.gdb? It won't open either. Next I'm going to try plugging this USB drive into a laptop and examine this folder.

I haven't run this tool before, but when I try it, I get a Error 000242 The input dataset, file, or layer is invalid. However, the tool dialog displays the Scale levels. The input causes an error as soon as I select Tile_Package. The unexported caches don't display in Catalog either.

I finally have Server 10.3.1 running on my new hardware with Desktop 10.3.1, and trying out a few things. I have been running Server 9.3.1, so I have a lot to figure out. The SampleWorldCities map service is listed in Catalog, and draws as expected in ArcMap. Found a big sid image that was handy and thought I would try making a cached image service. I followed the tutorial instructions Tutorial: Creating a cached image service—Documentation (10.3 and 10.3.1) | ArcGIS for Server , chose ArcGIS Online / Bing Maps / Google Maps.for the tiling scheme even though the image is UTM Zone 10N. Thought I could do that because it wasn't a mosaic, as described in the "Designing an image service". Adjusted caching so Estimated cache size was less than 50 MB. Set Tile format to jpeg. Analyzed, got no errors but warnings "Source not registered, will be copied to server" and "Your service will use WGS 1984" , then published. The new image service appears in listed Catalog, the thumbnail draws, but it will not preview in Catalog or draw in ArcMap. Properties say it is WGS 84. I grabbed another UTM Z10N sid and tried again, this time trying a suggested tiling scheme, 5 levels, looked at the warning about WGS 84 in more detail, the help said one solution was to do nothing, data will still overlay properly. Published, but same as my first attempt, I have a thumbnail, but no Preview or draw in ArcMap. What am I missing? Am I going to have to reproject all my image data to WGS 84 to make them work for Image services in 10.3.1?

I'll be looking at that when I get a chance to look at the USB drive. However, the USB drive in question was not restored. It supposedly is in the same condition and has the same contents as before the crash. The only restore we did was on the external HD, C:\.

I'm trying to figure out how a user has got himself in this predicament. Last month he had Windows 7 go bad on his PC, so we reinstalled windows, drivers, and apps. He reinstalled Desktop 10.2.2 from media I had downloaded, don't know which patches he applied. There was a partial backup of some of his data and settings, so some of the maps and data he had on C: were lost. But many of his projects and much of his GIS data were on an external USB drive, so I thought at least he wouldn't have trouble with that source. However, some of those mxd's don't completely load. Looking at the data sets that will not draw in the Catalog window, we see that they are listed, but have a blue ? in front of them, not the yellow !. All the ones like this that I saw are shapefiles. They don't draw in ArcMap or preview in catalog. What does the blue question mark mean? I suggested that he point Windows Explorer at the top folder of his GIS data on the USB drive and try a reset of owner to be his new login to everything in the tree, even though his new log in appears to be the same as his old log in.

I finally got a server with Arc Server 10.3 running and got my first look at it. Published SampleWorldCities. This is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and going to use a new SQL server on a separate virtual machine. This is going to replace the ArcServer 9.3, Windows Server, SQL 2000 combination that I have been running. A problem I now have is Desktop 10.3 has not yet been made available to me. When I installed Server 10.3, it required me to remove my install of Desktop 10.2.2, saying it was an incompatible earlier version. Am I going to be able to publish and administer Server 10.3 with Desktop 10.2.2 installed on a different machine, or am I going to wait until I can get Desktop 10.3?

Tried Point to Raster and the run time is trivial. So much better performance than trying to buffer the points. I'm guessing that the Value Field should be PointCount to make it equivalent to the LAS Point Statistics As Raster method set to Point_Count. I set the cell size here to 4 times my average point spacing. My test data set has a area of no points up the middle from a stream, so I have been trying Expand number of cells to around 5. I could assemble these steps into a model or script if I were going to do this a lot.

Oh, Thanks, I was looking for something like this. I was eager to try this, so I opened up my last project and was dismayed that one of the LIDAR sets I was using was delivered way, way, back in 2000. There were no LAS sets delivered. My first step had been ASCII 3D to Feature Class to get a multipoint feature class. I'll for sure try out the workflow you pointed out on my more recent LIDAR lidar data that was delivered with LAS data. But for now, I still haven't figured out a better way to get an outline polygon from this older data than to buffer the multipoints.

I was able to link MySQL tables to Desktop 10.0, but not 10.2.2. ESRI Customer Care told me in Feb. 2015 that it was no longer possible with 10.2.2. https://community.esri.com/thread/10539 However, I haven't tried the 32 bit MySQL ODBC drivers with 10.2.2. On a Windows 7 64 bit system, there is a executable that allows us to set up connections with the 32 bit drivers at C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. Dang! It works to use the 32 bit user DSNs to MySQL 5.1 data sources, same as it did for me under Desktop 10.0! A period appears in front of all my table names.

Sometime between Desktop 10.0 and 10.2.2, we lost the ability to connect Desktop to MySQL. https://community.esri.com/thread/10539 Wondering if ESRI will consider fixing this.
