More on this. I completed the two step backup and restore process, got all my databases restored to the new SQL server. Add Database Connection was able to connect to all of them but one, the one with all my lidar data and products, the biggest one. Tried both operating system and database authentication. The database pulldown lists the lidar database, but the connection always fails, with "Failed to connect to the specified server".

Using Create ArcSDE Connection File tool in 10.3.1, I was able to make a connection to one of my 9.3.1 SDE databases. I highlighted a raster, right clicked, Copy, pointed at one of the new 10.3.1 SDE connection files listings, hit Paste, and eventually it piped the whole raster into the new location. So I guess it would be possible to copy feature classes and rasters one by one to the new installation this way.

ESRI Customer Care told me that this was a bug in 10.3.1 but I didn't get the bug number. This was the tutorial I was using when I tried cached image services. http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/get-started/windows/tutorial-creating-a-cached-image-service.htm Strange that it is still part of the documentation for 10.3.1 if there is a bug that prevents it from working.

I have created the sad situation where I have some polygons in a file geodatabase, and an annotation feature class in a different personal geodatabase. What would be the steps to link these annotations to the polygons to create feature linked annotations?

This is a helpful article on getting the databases and user accounts all going again after a SQL Server restore: http://support.esri.com/ja/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/29672. Got this tip from Asrujit SenGupta at ESRI Tech Support.

Step 2 on that blog has no details at all, just says Step 2: Make a second migration from SQL Server 2008 to 2012. But I got it to work. Took a 2008 backup, restored to 2012. Now I just need to figure out how update the geodatabase and set up the users. Updating the geodatabase I got a fail: Bad login user [42000:[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Cannot execute as the database principal because the principal "sde" does not exist, this type of principal cannot be impersonated, or you do not have permission.] Bad login user Unpaused the database. Failed to execute (UpgradeGDB). Looks like I need to be connected to the database as user sde, which was the admin user on the old server and using SQL authenification. Trying now to give my SQL account owner privileges or make the connection as user sde.

Thanks for the links, X. It looks like the way to do it now is export metadata to XML, string replace in XML, import XML to metadata. I hoped I could be reminded about how I once did this. Since I took the VC course in 2006, would that have been 9.3.1? I thought I used a script that I adapted from this course quite a few times to update the contact info in my metadata. I search the c:\student folder on my old machine but didn't find it. I suppose there's no way to peak at a VC course that has been retired. I should search my old server for this script.

It was back in 2006 that I took a Virtual Campus course "Creating and Maintaining Metadata Using ArcGIS Desktop" and I think in that course I learned a trick to use python to update the contact info in metadata files. I think the course gave a list of variables that you could access with this trick. I think I extended that to access a couple other variables in the metadata files and loop through folders. But I can't get a reminder looking back at the course because it's been retired. Is this still possible in ArcDesktop 10.2 and this new Item Description standard?

I'm currently working on migrating from Server 9.3.1 to Server 10.3.1. In the old version, I had been storing multipoints, terrains, and product rasters like hillshades and accumulation in SDE. We liked the performance gains and permission levels we could get in SDE. Now I'm learning about the new way that Lidar is handled in 10.x. It seems like now the more direct way to use Lidar data is directly from the LAS files, to create LAS datasets or Mosaic datasets that point back to the LAS in their native format. I have been reading some interesting discussions on this like http://https://community.esri.com/message/439203#439203 but thought I'd start another discussion with my additional questions rather that hijack theirs. It seems that now there isn't a good reason to keep my Lidar sets in an enterprise geodatabase, except for those that are already stored in SDE. I might want to move those over for the users that are comfortable with the terrain approach and have many map projects using them. However, one of the features we liked about SDE was the ability to limit edit (write) permissions to data to just a few of us. Do folk use just network permissions to limit access to the LAS stored in their native format? I have one server running SQL Server, and one server to run ArcServer. I'd planned to allocate more storage space on the SQL Server than the ArcServer machine. For best performance, should I plan for more storage space on my ArcServer for the LAS files rather than store them on the machine running SQL server?

Well, I didn't find a suitable place to install SQL 2008 yet. Now my DBA is going off to float the Tatshenshini River in AK for three weeks. Looks like this is being postponed until August. I hope that there is not another release between now and then.

I have ArcServer 9.3.1 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 with Sql Server 2000. Have a new Windows Server 2012 R2 with ArcServer 10.3.1 on a new virtual server with SQL 2012 running on a different virtual server. We were hoping that we might be able to make a connection between ArcServer 10.3.1 and Arc Server 9.3.1 and pipe the compatible data to the new server. The compatibility matrix at Client and geodatabase compatibility—ArcGIS Help | ArcGIS for Desktop seems to say I can connect to the 9.3.1 geodatabases to upgrade. But we haven't been able to make a gis server connection in Catalog to the old server. Even though we could make a connection with SQL 2012 Management Studio to our SQL 2000 database, and I can establish an OLE DB connection in Catalog to old geodatabases, the ESRI database group has us restoring from the SQL 2000 backups. However, SQL 2012 couldn't restore from the old backups. The database group told us to restore to SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2008 R2 first, change the compatibility, then back it up from there, then restore the new backup on SQL Server 2012. We found a license for SQL 2008, but found we couldn't install it on Windows Server 2012 R2. Now we are installing on an older server to see if this will work. Did I wait too long to upgrade? The database group told us that we couldn't use the Management Studio connection, or the OLE DB connection to import files because that would only give us access to the DB tables, not the feature classes and image sets. But isn't the restores from SQL backups just going to give us the same tables?

The Shapefile repair tool requires .NET 1.1.4322. Jeez, can a release of .NET that old be found? Maybe the tool will not run on Win 7: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/net-framework-version-114322/683607ec-c59c-4d03-9a92-579cec4b6330
