With ArcGIS Pro 3.0 being released this month (in the next 2 days) – university IT and faculty are probably already curious about the ramifications for their fall courses.

As you start planning for what software you will support and recommend for labs and coursework, please keep some of these notes in mind:

  • Almost anything that is created or saved with ArcGIS Pro 3.0, cannot be opened or used with ArcGIS Pro 2.X (you can read all the details here: Migration from Pro 2.x to 3.0 https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/get-started/migrate-2x-to-3.htm)
  • When users go to save an ArcGIS Pro 2.X project that they opened with ArcGIS Pro 3.0, they will be presented with a warning that the project will no longer work with 2.x versions
  • One important exception to this – are ‘Project Packages’. Users will be able to create a Project Package in ArcGIS Pro 3.0 and then users can open this with ArcGIS Pro 2.x.
  • Computers will require the .NET 6 Desktop Runtime x64 to install ArcGIS Pro 3.0
  • If you run ArcGIS Pro on concurrent use licenses, ensure that you update to the ArcGIS License Manager 2022.0
  • Users will receive 'update' notifications in ArcGIS Pro unless these have been disabled by the administrator.

If you want any additional details on some of the notes above, please see Kory Kramer’s recent blog, Get Ready for ArcGIS Pro 3.0: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-pro/announcements/get-ready-for-arcgis-pro-3-0/

If there is anything else that you have questions or concerns about, please just reach out.
