Model Builder Error: Switching Selection on Select by Location

ArcMap 10.7.1 I'm trying to make several Select by Location in Model Builder, and am struggling with getting past my first selection because I need the selection to switch.  I'm also wary that if I make a first selection, is there something else I need to do to have it add to that selection successfully?

I've alternatively tried using the Invert Spatial Relationship checkbox in the tool, but that hasn't worked either.

I don't think the initial selection is required.  Would you not just use the Trees and Parcel layers as input into the select by location tool with the 'SWITCH_SELECTION' option to get the selected trees outside the parcel?

i.e. get rid of the new selection step.

can you share the tool properties, also these are feature layers?
