Hello looking for some information on if I need to run the Upgrade Asset Package Tool. I am working with the following workflow in ArcGIS Pro 3.3. With our upgrade to UN 7 we are staging a new UN enterprise geodatabase. The idea is to export out the current UN 6 using the Export Asset Package tool with data included to preserve the current data and schema. Make a few needed schema updates in the asset pack that were missed after topology was enabled. Then run the Stage Utility Network on new enterprise geodatabase in Pro 3.3 so it will be UN 7. Then run the Apply Asset Package with the asset pack that was exported from UN 6 with include data checked on. Question I have, looking at the version info of the asset pack that was exported from the current UN 6 it is saying the asset pack schema is version 3.1. Should I be running the Upgrade Asset Package Tool on the asset package? Does this override any schema changes I have made? Is it necessary to run this before applying the asset pack to the new staged UN 7? What is actually updated when this is run? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry for the very late response.

When you export an asset package, you always get the latest schema version (it's tied to the ArcGIS Pro release). So as the utility network and geodatabase gain new enhancements (flow direction and attribute rule triggering fields being some of the newer ones), you can export an asset package with the latest release and the necessary fields and tables will be present for you to start modifying.

Upgrade Asset Package adds any missing fields and tables that are required to model these new enhancements; it does not touch user schema. Running upgrade on a newly exported AP is a no-op as it is already at the latest release.

The instance where you need run it is when you have an existing asset package from a previous release and you want to apply it to a new UN while simultaneously adding new enhancements. You can apply a 1.0 asset package from ~7 years ago (though finding those in the wild are uncommon!) to a v7 UN. Running upgrade is never required.

Hope this helps!

To tack on to this discussion -   If I have a v4 UN that has been customized (additional fields/rules/config) but sitting dormant for a bit, would the following workflow bring it up to the v6 that I need (can't yet got to v7).  Executed with Pro 3.3.  It seemed to work, but looking to confirm.

  • Export v4 to AP
  • Run AP to Geodatabase (selecting v6)
