Heat Map Symbolization

We have data that we would like to symbolize with heat maps in a web app. I have discovered that this is a bit more complicated than I thought at first and would like some clarification.

  • It seems as though heat maps are intended to show density, which is not what I want to depict. You can chose an attribute, but I think that the heat map resulting from that shows density and the value of the field you chose (cluster of high values here/cluster of lower values there...). Is this correct?
  • The high to low range appears to be relative. We have time-enabled data, with different highs and lows at each time-period. I think that you get the full range of colors from the color map no matter what the highs and lows are. Is this correct?

If I'm right, does anyone know how you would symbolize time-enabled data with a heat map - or similar - that is not density-based and has high and low values connected to actual values?

Thank you,

Randy McGregor
