The upcoming update of ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App, scheduled for release on October 22, 2025, adds new functionality to analyze nearby locations, provides improved credit estimation, and streamlines discovery of featured layers from ArcGIS Living Atlas. The release also contains updates to points of interest (POI) data in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, as well as the release of new 2025 data for Canada, France, and over 60 countries worldwide.

Please note that all planned updates are subject to change. Check out the full details in the What's New blog article and final documentation on release day.

Mapping and analysis workflow enhancements

New nearby analysis workflow: smarter insights from surrounding POIs

This release continues development efforts to support enhanced analysis capabilities for points of interest (POIs). It introduces a powerful new Advanced analysis workflow known as nearby designed to help users understand what places and POIs are within walking or driving distance of their sites. It applies to competitive analysis in retail, real estate, and restaurants, providing an instant snapshot of who is in the market and how close those competitors are. In health care, it helps to understand service delivery and network adequacy. The analysis is available for SafeGraph and Data Axle POIs. You can also bring customers, clients, patients, or any other point layer into the analysis to discover relationships and interactions between different categories of places, brands, consumers, or competition.

The analysis summarizes key statistics such as the number of points by type and distance, and points per 1,000 households. This insight is invaluable across industries:

  • Public sector: locating areas lacking access to services like food, education, or health care.
  • Retail and commercial real estate: identifying neighboring competitors and complementary businesses.
  • Residential real estate: assessing quality of life and proximity to key amenities like schools, transit, shopping, or parks.

For organizations with customer, client, or member data, nearby analysis can be used to model catchment areas by assessing the density of individuals based on different distances and visualizing the patterns of change across distances. This improved data-driven decision making provides a deeper understanding of local context and interactions between places.

Flexible benchmarking for smarter site comparisons

In the November 2024 release, we launched the map-based benchmark comparisons workflow, transforming the traditional comparisons report into a more visual and flexible experience. In the upcoming release, we are enhancing it further by allowing users to define benchmarks not just by location, mean, or median — but also by setting custom values for each variable. This added flexibility helps tailor comparisons to specific goals, making insights more relevant and actionable.

Improved discovery of Living Atlas layers: featured content

Finding the right data just got easier. We are introducing a featured content list for Living Atlas layers inside Business Analyst Web App. This enhancement streamlines the browsing and discovery experience by highlighting layers This update makes it easier for users to locate authoritative content for mapping, analysis, and reporting, providing greater insight into the data with enhanced metadata on data categories and included layers, which reduces friction and improves the overall experience.

Visualize distributions with more control

We are enhancing the histogram tab in the Results pane for mapping and analysis workflows, making it easier to explore data distributions. New visualization includes showing mean, median, and legends in the histogram view, plus styling controls to adjust chart types, bin counts, outlier visibility, and zoom.

Localization update: suitability analysis infographic

The Suitability Analysis infographic template is now available in Japanese, French, and Spanish. When you launch the app in one of these languages and select a corresponding translated data source—such as Esri Japan, Esri France, or Mexico INEGI—the entire template will appear fully translated.

Infographic updates

ArcGIS Tapestry panel: smarter comparisons and customization

Following the launch of ArcGIS Tapestry in June, which included new infographics and the initial rollout of the Tapestry infographic panel, the upcoming release brings meaningful enhancements to this experience. A new comparison view allows users to evaluate key variables—such as population density, median household income, median home value, median age, and diversity index—across their analysis area, overlapping geographies of their choices (like states, counties, or ZIP codes), and the top Tapestry segments—all in one consolidated view. This makes it easier to understand how an area differs from or is similar to other locations and the distributions of segments within each of these geographies.

These updates make the Tapestry panel more insightful, powerful, and user-friendly, providing better means to communicate similarities and differences within their areas of interest.

Other enhancements

Know your credit costs up front

The upcoming release brings a much-requested enhancement: the in-app credit estimation tool, giving users up-front visibility into credit usage when exporting mapping and analysis results, infographics, and reports. Before completing an export, users will see an Estimate credits option that calculates how many ArcGIS Online credits the action will consume. This helps users avoid surprises, plan more effectively, and manage resources with confidence.

Improved accessibility

We are dedicated to making our infographics more accessible to all users. We have made considerable progress in ensuring 508 compliance and enabling more organizations to share infographics on their websites for public information. We have improved keyboard tabbing and screen reading capabilities as well as updated colors for proper contrast for the histogram in the Results pane. For infographics, you can now add alt text for images.

Support for ArcGIS Online settings

We have introduced two key enhancements to improve personalization and user experience in Business Analyst Web App:

  • Language preference sync: A new setting allows the app to automatically apply your ArcGIS Online member-level language preference. This means when you opt in, your Business Analyst Web App interface will now reflect your preferred language setting from ArcGIS Online, creating a more consistent experience across platforms.
  • User experience improvement program: Business Analyst Web App is now part of the Esri User Experience Improvement Program. By default, users are opted in, and the app will send anonymous usage data to help the team better understand user behavior and continuously enhance the experience.

  • POIs: Data Axle (April 2025), Safegraph (March 2025), and Foursquare Global Open Source (April 2025)

New ArcGIS Tapestry

Tapestry is one of the most widely used tools for understanding U.S. community demographics and lifestyles. This update marks the third iteration of the Tapestry system. Notable changes include reconfigured segments and LifeMode groups, comprehensive access to urbanicity attributes, a refreshed user experience and expanded data documentation, and updated tapestry panel, infographics and reports. You may opt to display either the Tapestry name or code in mapping, analysis, and reports, based on your organization’s preference.

Crime Indexes updates

In June U. S. data update, 2024 crime data will be redelivered using 2025 boundaries and be available through October of this year. Planning is underway, we appreciate your patience while we evaluate our crime data offering to ensure we provide the best possible data to our users. We will be provide additional details as they become available.

POI data enhancements

Other than updates to the latest data, here are a few enhancements to POI data to highlight.

  • For Safegraph and Foursquare, there is a significant increase in record numbers.
  • Safegraph has additional attributes such as Parent Locations and Industry Sector.
  • Safegraph has been updated to support 2022 NAICs, which brings the dataset to parity with other datasets. Now you’ll be able to use the same, consistent NAICS code lists when switching POI data sources.

Dominant Urbanicity variable

Dominant urbanicity is now available! You can use it for mapping in color-coded maps.

The infographic for Urbanicity Type has also been updated. This template can be found in the infographics gallery for Esri 2025.

Mapping and Analysis workflows enhancements

Points of interest (POI) search enhancements

Search POIs by code has been improved significantly to provide better results.

After running a POI search, you can now aggregate numerical statistics such as number of points, employee count, and estimated sales volume by site, hexagon, or geography of your choice. This enhancement helps answer questions like:

  • How many restaurants are located within each of my analysis sites?
  • Which five cities in San Diego County have the highest total sales volume for shopping malls?
  • What’s the average number of employees at hospitals by county across California?

This new aggregation capability also overcomes the 5,000-point display limit previously imposed due to contractual constraints.

Additionally, 22 new Places icons are now available for mapping, giving you more flexibility and visual clarity in your visualization.

Smarter suitability analysis with correlation insights and infographic sharing

Selecting the right variables is crucial for meaningful suitability analysis. When two variables are highly correlated, including both—even with different weights—can unintentionally double-count that factor, skewing your results. To help you avoid this, you can now use the correlation matrix to examine relationships between selected variables and remove those with high correlation.

And once your analysis is complete, you can share the results more effectively. Our pre-built infographic makes it easy to present your suitability findings to stakeholders in a clear and compelling format.

Effects

Effects bring Photoshop-like capabilities to your maps, points of interest and other layers in the map. An effect can be applied to all the layers types and map workflows including suitability analysis, smart map search, add points of interest and benchmark analysis. Effects can be applied to maps you bring in from Living Atlas, ArcGIS Online or your own organization to enhance your operational layers and even your basemap layers. This includes adding a drop shadow, de-emphasizing areas, and other effects to make your data story stand out or focus on a specific part of the map.

Infographics updates

Improving accessibility in the infographics player

We are dedicated to making our infographics more accessible to all users. To ensure 508 compliance and enable more organizations to share infographics on their websites for public information, we have made considerable progress. Users can now add alternative text to images during infographic creation. We’ve also introduced thoughtful enhancements to keyboard navigation.

You now have more flexibility and control when customizing your infographics!

  • New chart type: Progress bar chart
  • Enhanced panel styling: Customize outlines and corner radius
  • Label management: Use the Auto compact setting with chart labels
  • Cleaner data display: Percentage variables now default to one decimal place

We are excited to announce the upcoming update of ArcGIS Business Analyst Web App, scheduled for release on February 26, 2025. Below are the planned updates. Please note that all planned updates are subject to change; check back to stay informed about the latest news regarding the upcoming release. Our What's New blog and documentation will provide a comprehensive list of enhancements.

Data enhancement and deprecation

The upcoming release will include updates to the following datasets:

  • Advanced Demographics: Thailand 2023, Germany 2024, Japan 2025, India 2024.
    • India includes 117 new variables including new categories for spending and segmentation. The village and wards geographic areas have been remodeled into a single consistent layer which provides improved data detail in urban areas.
    • Japan includes approximately 350 variables available within 1km and 500m meshes, also known as a grid. The mesh is based on the Japanese Census geographies and has been enriched with additional variables than available in the official Census release. Meshes are only available when working with specific geographic areas of interest and with zoom levels that show extents under approximately 120km or 75 miles for the 1km mesh and 30km or about 20 miles for the 500m mesh.
    • Germany includes 28 new spending variables.
    • Thailand data has been revised with new demographic models and data inputs.
  • Standard Demographics from Michael Bauer Research for 25 Western European countries are updated to the 2025 vintage and 39 Asian countries are updated to align with other global data released in 2024.
  • Points of interest (POI) data from Data Axle (November 2024) for US and Canada and SafeGraph (December 2024) for US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. New global Open-Source data from Foursquare (January 2025).
  • USA Traffic data from Kalibrate (Q4 2024).

Global POIs data changes

In this release, we will be transitioning to the Foursquare Open-Source Places data as our global POI data source. We understand that this change may be disruptive due to the reduced number of attributes and changes to categories. This release is aligned with Foursquare's strategy to improve their data through crowdsourced assessment. Esri has made several significant improvements to data filtering that have resulted in a reduction in the number of POIs available.

While there are minimal impacts on your workflows, some are unavoidable. You will need to rebuild saved searches and infographics that used previous Foursquare data. Saved POI search layers that were created with Foursquare search results prior to the February 2025 release can still be viewed on the map, but the option to open and edit the POI search layer will no longer be available. All Foursquare-based POI searches that use data from the February release will be editable.

Data changes to SICs codes

SIC codes, or Standard Industrial Classification codes, have traditionally been one of the industry categorization systems available in Data Axle datasets. Starting in 2026, only NAICS codes will be available for searching in Business Analyst. This will allow users to adopt a common, consistent global system for searching for POIs that is source, vendor, and geography independent.

To assist with this transition, several changes will be implemented within Business Analyst Web App to help you gradually migrate to the NAICS code system across different datasets and countries. More details on specific SIC changes to POI and demographic data will be available in upcoming releases.

Infographics updates

Introducing the new report style

Classic reports have long been a favorite among many users. We are excited to introduce a toggle in the Run classic reports interface that will allow you to switch to new, modernized versions of these reports. New style reports are enhanced versions of the Esri classic reports, created through the infographics builder. They offer numerous benefits over the older classic versions, including improved design for better accessibility and interactivity. Additionally, the new report style publishes in digital formats and can be shared through other ArcGIS Online applications (such as Story Maps and Experience Builder).

Enhanced editing experience – Adding logos in infographics

The logo that you can set in the app’s preferences can now be utilized in infographics for both display and export. Plus, a new option in the infographics builder makes adding a logo to a template easier than ever. In addition to image-based logos, SVG logos can also be used, giving you more flexibility.

Improving accessibility in the infographics player

We are dedicated to making our infographics more accessible to all users. To ensure 508 compliance and enable more organizations to share infographics on their websites for public information, we have made considerable progress. The infographics player and the templates displayed will now support keyboard tabbing, making it easier for users to navigate through the content using only their keyboard.

New Gallery infographic templates

  • Health Care for At-Risk Populations
  • Demographic Snapshot
  • Business Summary Report – NAICS (Tabular)

Revisions to Foursquare-based infographic templates

Standard and Gallery templates which use Foursquare data including What's in My Community, Nearby Restaurants and Emergency Information have been updated to use the new data and category system.
