I'm in a very similar situation. I work with small voluntary organizations which have no licenses and could never afford ArcGIS fees. And in many cases, maintaining data privacy is essential. What I had thought was available with my account -- and would be ideal for my use-case, but perhaps not for yours -- would be the ability to invite a limited number of "guest users" to access group resources on a short-term read-only basis. Have you explored other products? When I last checked Tableau had similar limitations, although the mapping facility is very nice. PowerBI might be a good option for you. It's available for free to anyone with MS Office and does integrate with ArcGIS and some other mapping products. It's a bit more limited but with some finagling can be used to create pretty neat data dashboards with embedded maps. One that I didn't explore but have heard about is mapbox.

Sam Brown, Have you looked into hosting the application privately and then using your own authentication to allow users access? I began to look into it, but unfortunately didn't get far enough to figure out if such a solution would be technically feasible, affordable, or permissible within the licensing agreement. I'm pasting my bookmarks on this below. Since it's been a while and I didn't follow through, some may be outdated or not specific to ArcGIS, but you may be able to find something useful there. In particular, check out the links on Setting up a proxy. Please do let us know if you take away insights that may help others with this. I still can't seem to upload my GeoJSON files without an error. Does anyone know where I'd find the URL for GeoJSON files created by AGOL's export (save as) function? Not sure why those wouldn't be hosted.

I'm new to ArcGIS and have been looking for an affordable solution for hosting maps securely. Since realizing that my basic ArcGIS Pro license won't allow secure sharing, I've been exploring other options -- in this case using AGOL to host shape or JSON layers while creating maps in PowerBI.

When you ran the features to JSON tool did you check the bock for "Ouput to GeoJSON"? I did check Output to GeoJSON. But now I'm wondering, will I be able to host my GeoJSON file from AGOL? I tried using the export feature on AGOL to convert my layer to GeoJSON, and afterward there is no URL available on the Overview page. I've very confused about what formats AGOL will host.

I converted a feature layer to JSON format in ArcGIS Pro and I'm now attempting to upload the JSON file to My Content on AGOL as a hosted layer. Upon uploading (using Add Item-from my computer) an error appears ("Input string was not in a correct format. Couldn't store < > in TWD Column. Expected type is Int32.") The resulting attribute table is empty. I thought there might be a field type mismatch in the field referenced in the error (TWD),. First I tried converting the field to an integer, but that didn't solve the problem. Then I removed the TWD field, but then the error recurred referencing another field. I'd appreciate any insights.

I appreciate your thoughts, Michael. Unfortunately it looks like the volunteer license for ArcGIS Pro isn't at all the solution I was hoping for when I adopted it a few weeks ago as a platform for hosting shareable maps for community organizations. Data privacy isn't always a factor, but it's essential in enough cases that I think I'm going to have to back out of this license. This is really disappointing given the number of hours I've spent getting up to speed -- particularly since I both contacted Sales and worked through the forums to confirm the availability of secure hosting before I made this decision. Before I go, I'd still like to thank Dan_Patterson for being so patient while I worked through my learning curve last week. Dan Patterson -- you went above and beyond, and I did end up creating a very cool map. Just wish I could share it with the group I intended to!

Mike Minami. Thanks. That's helpful albeit very disappointing in my case. That brings me full circle back to my question in this thread on Jan. 29 -- before I rushed head long into adopting ArcGIS Pro: Which, if any, Esri product offers secure sharing of web maps outside of one's organization? Since I work on a pro bono basis for very small, informal community groups I'm guessing that I'm going to have to start from scratch looking elsewhere, but given my time investment with ArcGIS I'd like to confirm the options. Thanks again for making yourself available here. It's much appreciated.

Mike, so just to clarify further -- is it correct that I can provide secure access to my maps by having the person create a free AGOL account and then inviting them to my group? If they do not have a "non-personal" email address, would that be an impediment to their creating an AGOL account? Thanks in advance.

I'm exploring the ArcGIS product line and since I work as a volunteer for charitable organizations, I'm wondering if the Nonprofit-Volunteer license will allow me to offer secure map sharing to specific charities. If not, I'd appreciate insight into which product I would need. Mike Minami, would you or another 'authority' be able to provide clarification on secure map sharing? Based upon information in this discussion and with Sales regarding secure sharing, I purchased an ArcGIS Pro volunteer (Basic) license and just invested close to 100 hours learning and creating content. I'm really hoping that I wasn't misinformed. Thanks in advance.

I don't see an option to invite a non-accountholder to join a group. Could someone advise on specifically how to proceed?

Yes, ArcGIS Online for Organizations allows for the creation of Groups. These groups can be set as private or public so you have complete control over who sees the information who have created and posted. Randall E Raymond, I'm now ready to share a web map to a limited audience. I've created a group. Is it now possible to invite people without AGOL accounts to view a non-public web map? Or do I need to have all viewers create free accounts and then invite them to join my group?

Thanks for the suggestions. Since I've had so many issues and still don't quite understand the software, I've decided to postpone trying to address this for the moment. When I've gotten a little further along, if this error is still getting in my way I plan to circle back.

If you make a join by most methods... they are temporary and can be removed. ie (Add Join tool temporary) You make permanent joins by using Join Field or by saving the the results of Add Join using several options (ie Copy Tool for instance) Of course, that makes perfect sense and also explains why I couldn't remove the redundant fields from the joined table. I'll go back and address that and see if the dissolve works.
