All of my data and files are stored locally on my hard drive. I originally used a shapefile I had placed on AGOL, but reverted almost immediately to the local version. Is there any chance this is a memory or storage issue? I have about 240 GB free on my hard drive and 16 GB of memory.

I've attached the original shapefile that I downloaded from the public website. The 2 leftmost characters from the TWD text field indicate the town. I used that field to create a new field, Town. Then I imported TownNames by joining the shapelayer with a lookup table. I've placed the new shape layer with the 2 new fields in this layer package (which seems to be an exportable entity), and attached that here as well. Before attempting the dissolve, I did run repair geometry which deleted some features with null geometry. Thanks again for your help.

The field names with the dots are the result of a join between the shapelayer and a data table. In case it was a memory issue, I retried running the dissolve on just the shapefile but no luck.

Dan, I installed ArcGIS Pro 2.2.1 (basic license) on my standalone Win 10 laptop about a week ago. I then installed the available update. I have very little experience with mapping so I'm just using publicly available shapefiles and Census data to get up to speed. And yep, I've done almost nothing. I suppose I can remove the program, re-download, and reinstall it. As a brand-new user, I have no idea if this bugginess is typical. Really hope not!

Each time I try to sort an attribute table by right-clicking the field name in the header row and selecting Sort from the context menu, the table closes and I see this error message: "Failed to load data. Error - An invalid SQL statement was used." In this case I'm just sorting a the attribute table of a small shapefile. Any advice?

The only warning refers to the empty output: WARNING 000117: Warning empty output generated. I used First for any field that contains geography that would still apply to a town-level shapefile -- like country, state, and county. Since repeatedly re-specifying the Dissolve specs got a bit old, I only added a few of fields that need to be summed this time.

I have a map layer containing election district boundaries. All of the election districts are located within towns. As a learning task, I'm attempting to dissolve the boundaries of the constituent districts to create a town shape layer. I have a few statistical fields in the layer that I would like to sum when I dissolve the district boundaries. I've tried using the Dissolve command, but keep finding it returns an empty table (" WARNING 000117: Warning empty output generated."). I'm also unclear on what to enter in the Output feature class field. By default the field seems to be populated with the name of another shape layer in my project, but I don't want to overwrite that layer. After reading some forum posts, I thought maybe my geometry was corrupted. I tried the Check Geometry tool, which did return an error (" WARNING 000442: could not find spatial index at -1 in Westchester 2014_Town boundaries"). I also tried the Repair Geometry tool which ran successfully. However, when running the dissolve command I still am getting empty output.

Back again with better news. I followed Dan's instructions and converted the table to gdb format. All went well after that, with the app behaving much more predictably. (I followed the instructions here for calculating a text field based upon the existing numeric field values.) In terms of understanding the basic plumbing: Can someone tell me where exactly the new gba table resides? Is it an independent file, visible to Windows? Also, I thought I'd set my default file path to a specific work subfolder, but ArcGIS seemed revert it's default path back to Documents\ArcGIS. Can I move all the project folders elsewhere without breaking anything? Do people find that it makes sense to create each of their projects in independent locations with multiple copies of tables and layer files? Given the number of folders/files created for each project, this would seem to generate a lot of clutter. Thanks again, Dan Patterson and Tim Ormsby

I appreciate the tip. I'll try the tool tomorrow after rebooting -- both myself and this #$&@ machine. Thanks for all the help!

I am using ArcGIS Pro Basic. The data file is just a very simple feature layer in excel (xls) format that I downloaded from census.gov to play around with. In excel I stripped it down to 2 ID fields and 3 data fields. I just attempted to add a new field via the Data Management-Add field option in the toolbox and the whole shabbang crashed:

This is really pathetic, I've literally spent my entire day and have barely gotten a layer to load successfully. And I'm actually reading the documentation and watching the instructional videos.

Dan Patterson, So ...I created a new project. Went to the insert tab and clicked New Map (I assume that I have to do that before creating any data layer; otherwise the Add Layer option is disabled on the Map tab). But no luck. Is there some way to add a data layer without clicking New Map? Tim Ormsby, since this is a data table, would that bug still be an issue? I must be missing something obvious. Otherwise, no one would be able to use the software.
