Melita, Your last note was key to helping me understand how I need to think of the RMS in terms of degrees error. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to reverse engineer your approx. math, where you came up with 3 meters of error: degrees to meters. Would you please tell me what is wrong with my conversion math: 1 degree = 111 kilometers. To convert our RMS error: (0.0000884777 * 111) * 1000m = 9.8 meters of error Instead of re projecting the imagery, to gain more accuracy, can we not just change the arcmap session to the native projection, of the imagery, to eliminate the error as ArcMap projects the imagery on the fly? My original questions remain un answered. Is the RMS error, in the original attachment, realistic; does it tell me anything? Is it right to link pts in a tiff directly to a image raster? Can someone suggest how I might optimize the settings in the attached capture Rectify window? Please see attached. Ken

Melita, Thank you for responding. I realize the X & Y figures in the link table are lat & long. My doubt is about the total RMS error. Is that a reasonable RMS error to you (meters, in the map units)? I just tried creating point features on the NAIP imagery and then linked the 1948 tiff to those. 7 of these links resulted in a higher RMS error, although still well below 0.0 In geo referencing I've done before it required a lot of links to get just to a 0 RMS; course that work was with GIS 9.3 Ken

I just completed creating 8 links to rectify a 1948 aerial photo TIFF to 2013 NAIP imagery, using Arc 10.2 I'm skeptical of the Residual (RMS) error, which I use to judge how effective the links are. Please see the attached screen capture. I believe that the RMS error is in the units of the arc map session, in this case, Meters. Specifically, I'm skeptical of the 0000884777 Total RMS error. Does this look reasonable? I'm linking points on the 1948 TIFF to the same points that I've ID'd on the 2013 NAIP. Should I be linking: TIFF to Imagery? Alternatively, should I create some vector point features, overlaid on the 2013 NAIP, and then link: TIFF to point features? Ken

Michael, Thank you so much for your thread. You've directed us to look at a number of geo processing tools available to arcmap. Cleared up my mis understanding that spatial analyst was required. Geo processing tools: Just what I was hoping was available. We'll especially research the tiling cache toolset. I'll post back here the results of what we get from trying various workflows and tools. I'm really grateful for your direction. Ken

We're mapping historical right polygons for the Fallon, Nevada area. We have an existing MR sid of 1948 air photos. Does spatial analyst offer anything that would help us, like changing the format or tiling? I can get short term access to spatial analyst, if I think it would help us. I know the ERDAS app would help us, but I doubt I'll be able to get access to that app.

Robert, Your point about the file size greatly expanding when we change from the Sid format is really helpful. I'm wondering if the increased file size, in another format, will make it render faster. I agree with you that accessing the ArcGIS.com imagery is an option, unfortunately, we're dealing with historical imagery. From what format, other than SID, can we tile the images into smaller chunks? would spatial analyst allow us to tile? Ken

Robert, I hadn't thought of setting a scale range for a raster; that's a good trick to keep in mind. I realize that MR Sid is an image format. What format would you recommend changing the raster to to enable us to change it to a format that we can tile? Thank you for the prompt help, Ken

I have a large Mr Sid raster and would like to make it render faster in ArcMap. I could get access to the Spatial Analyst extension, but before I go to the considerable trouble to get the extension, I'd like to query the group about whether that extension is what I should use to break up my Mr Sid into 4 chunks or tiles. What other app or workflow should I use? My understanding is that ArcMap won't do the tiling, itself, without degrading the raster resolution. Ken

I'm just a lowly gis analyst. Can somebody suggest a highly abbreviated workflow for creating a fly through of a highway interchange? Your recommendation of the arcgis extension that I should use. I'll look at arcglobe, but I have confidence in the forum group to give me some great tips. Ken

Tim, You've been really helpful to me. Very interesting about those tools being avail only w/ the paid subscription. To sum up our discussion: Explorer does offer more map viewer tools than a FREE subscription of arcgis.com, but a paid subscription offers way more capabilities. I've noted the list of things you like in the paid subscription. I just did a quick comparison of map galleries and both products seem to offer the same selection maps of the topic, "LIDAR". Your point about being able to edit maps created in both gives one the ability to create a map in explorer and then bring it into a paid subscription to arcgis.com later. I'm very grateful for your help, Ken

Tim, Your last comment was really interesting; I read thru the tabs on the ArcGIS description link, you provided, and just took another look at the ArcGis.com map viewer. It sounds like you have access to a paid subscription of arcgis.com; I hope you won't mind if I ask you a follow up question, since I can only access the free subscription. You've helped me define my original question better. I'm interested in just the map viewer capabilities of the two, Explorer & arcgis.com, free subsription. My understanding is that both allow uploading a shp file with 1,000+ features. Is the buffer tool, you mentioned, and the geocoding service, mentioned in the description link you provided, available with only the paid subscription, since I can't find either of those features in the map viewer of my free subscription? I watched the ESRI webinar on arcgis.com and I'm still confused. thanks for your patience helping me, Ken
