Hi, I have an enterprise database residing in a SQL Server installation that I am accessing through ArcGIS Server 10.1 and ArcGIS Desktop (Advanced) 10.1. I would need to update a dataset that is in use by a service in the server installation. I can see, using queries to the tables in the SQL Server installation and using the lock manager, that the data is locked, and I can't change anything. If I shut down the Server service on the server machine, or stop the services, then the data is not locked. In ArcGIS Server 10.0 I just edited service files, and the data was no longer locked. Now I try the method introduced in ArcGIS Server 10.1 - using ArcCatalog, and updating the advanced parameters - setting the schemaLockingEnabled status to false. But nothing happens - data still locked! Tried restarting the individual services + the server process - but no luck... ! Any tips?

Hi Derek, thanks for the response. I was aware that I wouldn't be able to hide layers in the map view for a tiled service, but the legend is still dynamically rendered, when it is requested, right? I had some hope that one would still be able to hide some layers in the legend display! Should I enter this as a feature request on the ideas website?

Hi, I am trying to hide some layers from a service, an ArcGIS 10.1 tiled map service. I am using 3.1 of the API... My legend constructor looks like this: geoLegend = new esri.dijit.Legend({ map:myMap, layerInfos: [{layer:myLayer, title: 'My data', hideLayers: [0,1,2,3]}] },"legendDiv"); But the hideLayers part doesn't seem to stick... What am I doing wrong? Does this not work on tile service... ?

Hi, In a Javascript API application of mine we originally had the functionality where the user drew a box on the map, and I set up a little thingie to create four boxes around it with a semi-transparent gray fill. That shaded out the area around that box very nicely. Now my client has asked for the functionality where the user draws any irregular polygon, and we are interested in creating a similar effect (shading everything around the polygon). Any tips on how to create that? See attachment for a simple view how it works with a rectangle/box.

Maybe you need to check what the 'mxd' variable contains!

you can also import a toolbox and run a script (in the toolbox) that way.

ok cool, thanks - I have to look at that more closely at some point to see if I understand what your script does. I snooped around in the folder C:\ProgramX86\gis\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\arcpy\arcpy, and I saw that one can grab a lot of things from those files as well.

Hmm, I think I got it - in my iPython console, I just type arcpy. and then pressed <tab> - and I got it all! Another way is to do a dir(arcpy) and dir(arcpy.sa).

When you say "toolbox commands", are you talking about the exact name of the tool (with proper capitalization)? Yes, I am primarily thinking of all the arcpy.something tools (not the arguments etc though). Maybe constants and classes would be useful as well.

What I think you want is to convert the true north value to a new field with a grid based bearing. If this is the problem you are in luck - there is a command for that! Not sure when it appeared 10.0(?) That refers to an earlier obsolete tool Calculate Geodesic Angle if you are still on 9.x CalculateGridConvergenceAngle_cartography (in_features, angle_field, {rotation_method}, {coordinate_sys_field}) Excellent, thanks - just what I was looking for. Then I would have to give up the projection that I am currently using though (Wagner VII, which I use Global Mapper to project the data to) and using something else - but I can live with that. I didn't a quick search through the documentation, but I must have missed this one.

Hi, I frequently do my coding in the excellent text-editor Vim. It has a feature to do text-completion from a dictionary, which I would like to use - is there a plain list of all the toolbox commands + Spatial Analyst functions that one could use? When I type in Vim I am often not sure about the capitalization etc of the commands.

Hi, So I have a point dataset on circulation for the whole world. The data is unprojected. One of the attributes is a bearing for the atmospheric circulation, with a compass direction. Now I want to reproject this, to for instance Winkel III - is there any way to reproject it so that the value 0 in the bearing attribute still points towards north? Reprojecting the location of the points is simple, the crux is how to recalculate the bearings! Hope you understand what I mean! Any tips are welcome!

It seems like the click event is both interpreted on the slider + as zooming the map. If I could bind a onClick event to the slider, then I guess I could try to create a workaround somehow, but I am not sure how to do that...
