Hi Peoples. What are the current thoughts around storage of rasters in Oracle ArcSDE Geodatabase? A few years back - it was the thing to do. Geodatabase became that central place where you could find all your vector and raster data. But there were some catches - backup and restore of database, additional load on database, removing the raster if you had been unwise with tablespace placements through key words. Rasters could increase the DB size very quickly compared to vector data. Some unhappy DBAs. With mosaic datasets, ArcGIS Server and Portal, increased ability of File Geodatabases, I suspect the storage of Raster in an Oracle database may not be 'best practice' any longer. Thoughts? Cheers, Mark

We moved from 10.3.1 to 10.6.1. 10.7.1 was not released at the time we started the migration. During our tuning we wanted to reduce load on servers, and set min instances to 0. Had the cold start up issue though. Is a balancing act. Hoping that 10.7.1 shared instances will get around this problem, but have not tested. Here is another hint - don't leave it too long between upgrades. Do it often. A four year gap is a killer.

We have just had a difficult year in relation to server crashes and performance tuning. Following are the best references I could give you are: ArcGIS Enterprise: Performance and scalability best practices Server Software Performance PerfQAnalyzer for ArcMap System Log Parser for ArcGIS Shared instances in 10.7 Some hints from our experience: Use the System Log Parser to work out which of your services are consuming the most resources. Focus on the top 20. Tune the number of instances first. Pay a lot of attention to this Tune the individual mxd files to ensure these are working to the best ability. Use ArcGIS monitor or something like Grafana to monitor the hardware Get the the latest release of software as soon as you can Be very careful of the ArcGIS Server Unintended Service Restart bug - make sure you install the patch for this You may find shared instances in 10.7 has some advantages. Hi Joris, Are you familiar with the System Log Parser? This is brilliant. We often download the logs from ArcGIS Server onto a PC with WinSCP, then run this tool against them. It will summaries the logs into an excel spread sheet so you can identify where all your resources are being used. We had severe issues last year with performance, and this tool allowed us to narrow down quickly which services to look at. System Log Parser for ArcGIS Cheers, mark

Hi Tim, There is an equivalent for ArcMap as well. We use it all the time - has proved very valuable for performance tuning our mxd projects that are published to services. The scripting also looks interesting - if you are into coding, this could be valuable. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, We took a fair bit of time to look into the active-active deployment. For the most part it worked. However when it came down to the Geoprocessing services, and the Sync process that are asynchronous - not easy to solve with the sticky sessions. Given the time frames - had to ditch this approach. Hi Moginraj, Rolled out a new set of servers with the patches this morning. Two machines in the one site. So far, so good. Publishing has not caused the synchronization and restart of services. Our load averages and other stats for the servers are looking good. Log files are not showing anything out of the ordinary thus far. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, Just don't do it. If you are going to go down this path, upgrade the 10.3.1 to 10.6.1 - back that up. Do not mix versions. Cheers, Mark

Hi Peoples, Our admin created a new install of ArcGIS Server 10.6.1. Fine so far. We have a large number of services, and a large number of users and roles. To create the site, they took the backup from the 10.3.1 ArcGIS Server, and restored it into the 10.6.1 install. The System and Utuilties did not come over, so they copied data from the /agsDirectories/directories/arcgissystem/arcgisinput over. I am not 100% confident in this set up. I was just looking over the Upgrade notes: Upgrade ArcGIS Server There is mention of running <Server install directory>/tools/upgradeserver/upgradeserver.sh What does this do? Thought on the install process? Cheers, Mark
