What you may consider is converting the raster to a TIN, create a polygon that covers the desired area and then use the Interpolate Polygon to Multipatch. This will create a 3d object, which should display as 3d in Google Earth. I do not think that Google Earth offers the 'Base Height' Functionality that is available with ArcGlobe/ArcScene. The 3d Object should display in Google Earth in 3d like the other models do.

If you are exporting the sketchup model as a .dae, then there are three ways to import it in ArcGIS. You can create a point and then import the 3d symbology, create an empty multipatch feature class in a geodatabase and then insert the multipatch manually or you can use the Import 3d Files tool. The .dae cannot be added directly, you have to import it one of these ways.

The Point File Information tool will create a series of polygons based on the lidar data. That could be used for the index grid, since it will have the original LAS data there. What you could use is the tool at 10.1 that will convert the LAS Dataset directly to a raster if that is your preferred display method. You would have to create the LAS dataset, but the process is simply adding the LAS data directly to the LAS Dataset, no pyramid creation is necessary like a terrain. However at 10, I do not know of a way unless you cyclically process each individual file from LAS to terrain to raster for you to end up with the 700 LAS and 700 DEMs. I suppose since you have the larger terrain, you can convert it to a raster and then iterate through the point file information polygon and clip each one. I am not sure which one would be faster based on what you have already done.

NeoGeo If you are having issues with creating the overviews based on your error message, then consider where you are writing the overviews, by default it will be in the same directory as your file geodatabase. If you do not have the room or if there is a file there of the same name, you can get those errors. If you plan on splitting up the location of the overviews and the geodatabase, then use the Define Overviews tool to specify a new location of your choosing. Maat That is an open ended error message. Without more information there isn't really much to go on. Some of the reasons I have seen the process fail is that the rasters chosen cannot fit into the parameters set in the mosaic dataset. So if you define a particular coordinate system and the added raster is either not defined and cannot fit (mosaic dataset is in WGS 1984 and the rasters are undefined but the spatial extent would be a number greater than 180 [the maximum a decimal degree can be]). I would encourage you to create a Support Incident and have someone take a look at your workflow to help determine what is going on.

There are a few unpublished enhancement requests for the specific ability. All are marked as to be considered in future releases of the software. I would encourage you to create an Support Incident to be added to the enhancement request to increase it's visibility to development or create a post on the Ideas website like this one for a plan and profile tool.

The Interpolate Shape tool has the option to select only the vertices or the entire line. If you select the entire line, it will add vertices where the elevation changes, making it a rather complex feature. If you have a coarse spatial resolution(large cell size) in your DEM, then the number of vertices created will be much less than a finer resolution DEM(smaller cell size.) If you are altering the sampling distance under your cell size, then you will not see a difference, to see a difference it must be much greater than the default.

There is a great blog about how to calculate the slope on a line using the Add Surface Information tool. So to answer the original question, it is possible once you upgrade to ArcGIS 10.

Be sure to select the proper raster resolution when selecting the TIN as the display choice. Also be sure to select the drawing priority order if you are getting the TIN to 'bleed' through.

When adding the rasters to the mosaic dataset, the raster will not be imported, just the footprint so there is not going to be a resampling error. I would see if the statistics for the mosaic dataset have been calculated and if not be sure that the statistics for each raster is as well. For specific help with your mosaic dataset, then call in to support and we can set up a desktop streaming session and look at your mosaic dataset with you.

Does your zone raster have an attribute table? I would check there first, occassionally even if the raster is an integer/discrete dataset, there is no raster attribute table created and must be created afterwards. Use the Build Raster Attribute Table if you do not see a raster attribute table to open.

There is a blog that discusses 3d Virtual Cities here. Also there is demo showing it in action here. What your quote is referring to is that it is possible to purchase data from those companies that can be used to display in ArcScene or ArcGlobe in 3d. There is information through ArcGIS Online that can be utilized immediately, but for many of the multipatches and 3d objects, you must create them on your own or purchase them from a vendor.

How did the tests go with the evaluation of your system? Since you are using what is probably a meters based equal area right? What I was trying to point out is that when you have a coordinate system with decimal degrees as the horizontal unit, ArcScene does not resolve it well.

I would recommend the site that tests your system against minimum requirements for ArcGlobe. That should give you a basic assessment of your system. Also bear in mind that ArcScene depends greatly on the available memory, so shut down other programs that may use a lot of memory to improve performance. There are some other tips for optimization here. Finally, I recommend using a projected coordinate system if you plan on using the vertical exaggeration. The geographic coordinate system data seems to create an undesired effect.
