Are you working in a custom environment, or the default arcgispro-py3 one? If a custom environment, could you share the output of `conda list` on the environment from the command line? If the default environment, can you see if notebooks work as expected outside of Pro, e.g. by starting a Python Command Prompt and running `jupyter notebook %userprofile%`?

Can you log a request through support? I'm not aware of what would cause this issue and don't know of any existing reports of it. Thanks!

OK, I took a look at this. It looks like the subprocess call is copying the full environment variable table that Pro is using, and that is causing ArcPy to be run as if it were in the application which subsequently fails to load some components of the software (including the ones which include your env properties). Running this should let you work around this limitation: import os
import subprocess
cmd_env = os.environ.copy()
if 'GP_PROXY_OPS' in cmd_env.keys():
cmd_env.pop('GP_PROXY_OPS')
subprocess.run([r"C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Pro\bin\Python\Scripts\propy.bat"], env=cmd_env) Once that is set, the rest of ArcPy should load and you should see the expected full env dictionary. Cheers, Shaun

Would you be able to report a bug to us for this? That'll help us keep track of it and notify affected customers once the issue is addressed. I agree its pretty annoying to not have the frames line up with the stated line numbers.

OK, thanks for a quick post. It looks like the crash is happening very low level in the stack, when trying to read the relationship classes of the data. Is this dataset you're working with particularly old or otherwise have any special characteristics? I'm suspicious that there potentially is some lower level issue based on the fact that it failed again after a reinstallation and was working on your colleagues machine, unfortunately nothing obvious from that crash dump to point at a clear cause other than the relationship classes functions being loaded from a DLL fail.

Have you submitted the crash dumps? If you send one to me, I can take a quick look to see if it's anything obvious. Are you using the default `arcgispro-py3` environment, or a custom environment?

If you upgrade to Pro 2.9 or newer, using ArcPy will raise a warning rather than an error and it should work OK with pipenv. That said, we only specify our dependencies for ArcPy and our Python environments via conda, so using pipenv may not work for dependencies which cross-reference things that we need for the core functionality, such as NumPy. If you are able to upgrade, you may also be interested in the new arcpy-base package that's available in Pro 3.1, it skips the Jupyter and other more complicated parts of our stack to provide a minimum 'import arcpy' package. Cheers, Shaun

Got it. It sounds like there may be some cross-talk between ArcPy and the .NET SDK that I'm not aware of. Do you have the Pro 3.1 version of the Pro SDK installed? I might check that is installed, and see if it has an effect. Also, see if (temporarily) uninstalling the Maps SDK changes things.

Can you share information about how you're calling the subprocess in your last case? It sounds like this might be something best handled through support to get enough details to understand the nature of the problem, it may be a bug, but also may be some more complicated configuration is required.

Glad you found a solution. If you have a process which corrupts a geodatabase, it'd be great to get that logged through support so it can be addressed in the software, but I know that's work that you have found away around and may not be a priority for you. Cheers, Shaun

You can still use PyScripter, but note that you'll need the x64 version since Pro and Enterprise 11 are both 64-bit only. To configure it, you'll need to tell PyScripter where your installation is, by selecting Run > Python Versions > Setup Python Versions. From that dialog, you'll want to navigate to the arcgispro-py3 folder, if you're using the default environment. For Pro, that might look like: If you're doing this on the Server, you can similarly configure it to point at the Pro runtime included in Server, see https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/develop/windows/scripting-service-publishing-with-arcpy.htm for the paths. There are many other IDEs also available like VSCode, but if you're comfortable with PyScripter it should work fine. Cheers, Shaun

Adding to what Dan wrote, when you set an environment as the default for Pro by activating it, the shortcuts including the ones for IDLE in the explorer menu are rewritten to point at the custom environment being used. This way, the IDE and Pro are kept in sync, which is what most folks typically want.

@JoeLummi it looks like it may have been a data issue based on your response on GIS.SE, was that the case and you were able to address this? Would you be able to write here what you did on GIS.SE and mark that as the accepted answer? Thanks!

Hi Duncan, I'm sorry for your experience with Spyder, that sounds incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, Spyder is particularly complicated to support because it is built and run out of its own conda environment, and getting an environment which works well for both Pro and Spyder isn't a completely trivial task for either party. If you'd like us to have better integration with Spyder, I'd definitely be willing to track it in an idea or somewhere that we can gauge the relative value of the work. I think Spyder is a nice application and would like it to work better, I have worked on a number of issues Dan has brought up over the years, but with mixed results. The install packages pane is an optimists' world, and unfortunately there are areas where new packages won't work to the level that is helpful. I'm not sure doing per-package blocking is a good idea because we'd have to carefully track these for every release of a blocked package, I think I'd rather try to get feedback on what we need to make the Spyder experience better, and whether the Spyder developers can help us to that end. Best wishes, Shaun

Hello Kevin, Could you provide some information on how you start PowerShell and whether you have any integration with e.g. Python.NET being used? When I start a new Windows Terminal session with Powershell, I can use the scripts and it seems to work without issue. I wouldn't expect to see .NET exceptions being raised from a Python perspective, so am not sure where these are entering into the picture. Cheers, Shaun
