Hi, We don't offer either of those options in the hosted Story Map Series, but especially the first option would be a good enhancement. One thing you could do as a workaround is to create a Story Map Basic app for your overview map and then display that, using the &embed parameter to hide its header, in your Map Series: http://www.arcgis.com/apps/StoryMapBasic/index.html?appid=a0a12caf5025441497d49d35b01a07f8&embed

Could you let us know which web URL you are trying to add, or give an example of one that doesn't work on the Main Stage. In the Edit Section dialog, the Back button at the bottom to get back to the panel where the web page URL is shown:

One more option for handling larger number of features/places with pictures is our Story Map Shortlist app. This organizes features into tabs, where each tab contains the features/places of a particular type. So the user experience is oriented more to browsing than linear sequence like in the Story Map Tour and Story Map Journal. Note that the Shortlist currently doesn't support directly/easily accessing pictures in online albums, and currently doesn't support displaying images at a large size. We are working on enhancing the Shortlist in both of these areas later this year. Another option to consider, instead of trying to put everything into one story map, might be to create several story maps, such as a set of Story Map Tours, in which to present your content, and then make a web page or gallery providing access to all those stories. For example if your collection of photos can be divided up some way, you could enable people to select the category they want to view, and then launch a smaller, more manageable story map letting them view that category. You may get some ideas for what this might look like from this set of examples in the Story Maps Gallery, although there's not really a great example of what I have in mind in there.

Hi Suzanne Thanks for contacting me via email and sending the info abut the feature services you published. Like you mentioned it looks like ensuring that your feature services were published from Desktop with the same ArcMap data frame properties 'extent used by full extent command' setting helped standardize the default extents of those services. The extents seem to be sync-ed now in your story map between the tabs and after the user presses Home after zooming in. https://ufl.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=fffce7cd8751497186314ad063a8bd0b Rupert

You can of course author your Story Map Journal so that each section in your journal displays a different map or different extent and/or set of layers from a particular map. Why not just add extra sections into your journal. Or simply use main stage actions (i.e. the links you can author in your journal text that cause the map to change (zoom/pan/layers on or off/popups appear. I'm not sure if you could customize the Story Map Journal so that the map changes as the users scroll down through a section, but that doesn't seem like it would be a good user experience because it wouldn't be obvious to the user why the map is changing. So it's really much better to just add additional sections into the Journal or use main stage actions. You can also make your main stage actions look like buttons which may work for what you want to do: (see https://developerscorner.storymaps.arcgis.com/create-buttons-for-main-stage-actions-using-the-style-tag-144b3aeb5583 ). Hi Suzanne The link you pasted has &edit at the end so it tries to launch the Story Map Series builder. Here's the correct link to your app https://ufl.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=35d03fa6b1634cddae26fb8723456f43 I do see the changing extents when I click the Home button. Are you using one web map in this series or multiple web maps?

Could you let us know of which our Story Map application templates you are referring to. We have several different apps, and each one provides authors with a different layout and user experience for delivering a story. http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/ Rupert

If you are self-hosting the images, image size is an important performance concern. We sometimes see map tours with images (either self-hosted or accessed from a third party website) that are very large and slow things down. We recommend JPG files with the ideal size for the main image 1000 x 750 pixels (which is also the best aspect ratio for the Tour) and the thumbnails 200 x 133 pixels. I also think tours look significantly better if all the main images are the same size. For example see: http://storymaps.esri.com/stories/maptour-palmsprings/ which uses those image file specs throughout. Rupert

There are some nice Story Map Tours where authors have created single images from a collage of several photos: http://dubuque.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=14ed42ce82c140c1ae5c5a32d7d3407f http://slocity.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=8276112a27a24dc7af0c3daa3b07c59 http://www.arcgis.com/apps/MapTour/index.html?appid=61f838d5480e40e1b48555744beef0e0

Developers and tweakers can definitely download any of the Story Map templates and freely modify the code. For example, see this highly customized example tabbed map series with checkable layers, etc: Explore Atlas | Vital Signs Another approach would be to make a story map and embed a different app inside that story map that provides the specific functionality you want to present. For example if you to include a map with checkable layers in your story, you could choose one of the other configurable apps that is built into ArcGIS, then embed that app into your story map.

Hi Kory The Story Map apps are really designed to create UIs where the end users aren't provided with that level of control. So we don't expose checkable layer lists because for this sort of UI it is easier if the author creates great looking maps with the best selection of layers for the story being told. As an author creating a Story Map Series, you can use one or more maps in your story for each entry (tab, bullet, etc) in your series, and you can choose which layers you want to display. So for example you could have different layers turn on and off automatically as people switch between the different entries in your series. Another option to check out is the Main Stage Actions in the Story Map Journal, This lets you author links or buttons in your narrative that, when your end users press them, perform actions on the map like turning specific layers on or off, zooming to particular extents, panning to a feature and displaying its popup, etc. So that is another way you can allow your end users to interact with your maps: Using Story Map Journal Main Stage Actions | ArcGIS Blog
