My mission today is to put our Distributed Collaboration to the test to see what works and what doesn't. For background, I have a two-way distributed collaboration set up between ArcGIS Enterprise 11.2 and ArcGIS Online. Here is my current testing scenario: A user creates two web layers, two web maps, and a Story Map that references them in Portal The user shares all items to ArcGIS Online via the Collaboration After the Story Map transfers, the user decides to remove one of the maps. They remove it in Portal, then saves and republishes the Story Map. Does the Story Map update? Based on my testing, the Story Map does not update. The metadata on the item page does, but the map that was removed in Portal is still in AGOL. Seeing that the map was not removed in ArcGIS Online even though the metadata did, the user removes the Story Map from the Collaboration. The user checks ArcGIS Online and discovers that the Story Map is still there and still has the icon that indicates that it was received via a distributed collaboration. In my mind, there are two issues here: When the user removed the web map from the Story Map, the collaboration should have recognized that and made a new copy of the app in ArcGIS Online. When the user removed the Story Map from the collaboration, it should have been deleted from ArcGIS Online. I'd appreciate feedback on these two assumed issues!

I resolved this issue. Instead of being copied, the layer was shared to AGOL as a reference. So, when I opened the item page, it needed permission to access the data in Portal. I fixed it by setting the sharing level on both the Map Image Layer and the Feature Layer to Everyone and sharing both with the collaboration.

@DanMoore, my feature editing layer is set up according to the process outlined in Esri's Configuring Branch Versioning in ArcGIS one-day instructor-led class. After viewing your video and reading the comments on this post, I enabled Replica Tracking and Sync. I republished from scratch, but my users with the Esri default Creator User Type and a Data Editor Role are unable to view or edit the data in web maps. Users with the Creator User Type and Administrator Role are able to view and edit. Should Data Editor roles be able to edit these web layers?

@SusanTran, that does help, thank you! It would be nice to have a button to do this in the Map Properties so that you don't have to dig into Catalog View, but this gets me close enough that I'm happy.

I published a user-managed read-only feature layer to our Portal (ver 11.1), shared it with Everyone, and then added it to our Distributed Collaboration to share with our ArcGIS Online organization. When I open the Item page, I get a prompt to log in to Portal. How can I get rid of this Portal login requirement?

Currently, we can create and store metadata for published feature layers in a map's properties. When we share the layer with Portal, all of that metadata gets copied into the metadata for the service and the item page gets that information automatically, However, there is no way to upload or reference a custom thumbnail in the map's metadata, so every time we have to overwrite a layer in Portal, we also have to go to the item page and re-upload the custom thumbnail. I would like to have a way to either store or reference the thumbnail within the Pro project and have it auto-upload when a service publishes.

@OwenGeo - I completely missed that checkbox! Now that it's unchecked, I bet I won't have that issue anymore. Thank you!

I am still having this issue as of November 2023. Is that a bug?

Not yet. I'm brand new to tasks, so I thought I'd ask around first to make sure that I wasn't making a rookie mistake. I'll probably call tomorrow if I don't get any ideas here. Thank you!

I have a step in a task that uses Calculate Field to change the value of one field in one record of a table in a file geodatabase. After it calculates, I want to copy that value from the table and assign it to a variable to use in a future step. However, when I set up an action under "When exiting the step" to Copy attributes from Feature or record modified in this step, I get the error message: "Error: Cannot retrieve attribute. Unable to retrieve selection modifiedInStep." Can anyone help me fix this?

Per Esri's documentation, Attribute Rules and Contingent Values are not supported in geodatabase replicas. I reached out to Esri Technical Support to ask what would happen if we implemented Attribute Rules on a child geodatabase participating in a two-way replica (Esri case 03438244). They tested that workflow and did not turn up any issues, but reiterated that it is not a supported workflow and recommended against implementing it without taking regular backups for disaster recovery purposes. I would like to see Esri create a supported workflow for using Attribute Rules on replica databases. While I do not need to replicate the rules between the parent and the child, I can imagine that it would be useful functionality. Here is our current workflow: - County GIS has the master NG911 geodatabase. This includes, but is not limited to, address points and road centerlines. - City GIS (my organization) has a child two-way replica database of the master NG911 geodatabase. We are responsible for maintaining geodata within our city limits, as we are the authoritative source for addressing in this area. - Each address point and road centerline has attributes related to the zones that intersect. For example, an address point must be assigned a fire response zone and a law response zone. The city uses Attribute Rules to auto-populate these fields based on their intersection with the polygon layers that track that information. We have several other rules (auto-incrementing IDs, for example), but one example of the utility of Attribute Rules should be sufficient.
