You cannot do that using ArcGIS Deskop or using SQL Server. You will HAVE to you SDE Command line tools. Check the links I provided.

You can use SDE Command line 10.2.2 for now. 44300 - Can ArcSDE command line tools be used against 10.3 and newer geodatabases? Otherwise, you can wait for the following Enhancement request to add this functionality: ENH-000086635 : Add functionality to register database views with the geodatabase

There is no tool to do this from ArcGIS Desktop. 'sdelayer -o register' is a part of the SDE Command line toolset. ArcSDE Administration Command Reference sdelayer

This is an expected behavior. I think you should read\research a bit more on this. There is a lot of discussions and Threads out there discussing this same thing. To explain in brief....Starting from ArcGIS 10.1, Database Views can be created using ArcGIS Desktop, which like normal Views created from Database end, are not 'Registered with Geodatabase' or 'Registered with SDE'. This is why ArcGIS requests you to choose the Unique Identifier when you add the View to ArcMap. Instead if you create the View with SDE Command line tools, it automatically registers the View with ArcSDE and doesn't request you to choose the Unique Identifier. The other scenario, where other than Analyze and Privileges, all other options are greyed out, that is expected as well. You cannot register a Database View as Versioned or do the other stuff listed under Manage. Have a look at the Online Links for more info.

Instead of going to the Layer Properties and then changing the source, try Right-Click on layer> Data> Repair Data Source..> This should repair all the data sources for layers from that same gdb and Version.

I like the easy workaround you already thought off! Anyway, what if your Boss just does a Resource after getting the MXD from you? He just needs to have an existing connection to that gdb on his machine (maybe already connected to your Version if needed) and then when you give him your MXDs, he just resources the layers. Does this work?

Create a new connection to the SDE master Schema using only the TNSName in the Instance parameter and then try the upgrade. Check if this helps.

No Esri LOB will not be supported with Query Layers. If you have quick access to ArcCatalog and can connect to the geodatabase from the ArcCatalog interface, just right-click on the Spatial View\origin feature class and check Properties to determine the Storage_type.

Mike MacRae wrote: Thanks Chris. One other piece of information. I tested another database we have. One that's running SDO_Geometry. Building a Query Layer in on a feature class from that database seems to work fine and populates the shapes in ArcMap. The database I want to use is running ESRI Binary spatial type. I am wondering if this might be part of the issue. I can't seem to find any reference to the spatial data types and query layers. This conflicts with the Statement that you had provided earlier, which made me assume that you were using Esri LOB. If the data is in ST_Geometry, then it should not show up as a Table for sure.

Mike MacRae Sorry, we missed this post initially! What you are observing is an expected behavior. This is documented in the Online WebHelp links: Configure database and clients to use query layers—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop The above link is for ArcGIS 10.3.x, however it stands true for 10.2.x as well. Two spatial types are supported in Oracle that you can use in your query layers: ST_Geometry and SDO_Geometry.
