Thanks Robert for the File --> Save Other As -- > Reduce File Size... I just tried it on an A1+ poster which was 37,965 KB and is now 10,097 KB. A good improvement! But if I try "Save as PDF, optimized", it produces the exact same size 10,097 KB. However, the PDF Optimizer dialog box gives much more control on how to optimize. Also, as mentioned previously, in Acrobat Pro, resterizing the .pdf with Tools pan -> Print Production tab -> Flattener Preview gives a 3,368 KB file size for the same poster. But it is now rasterized like a .png and just "encapsulated" in .pdf to be convenient to use...

Thanks Shelley. I tested that before but it was clearly inefficient! Hundreds of annotations moved that way drive you mad. In the interim, I do the most I can in Pro and still do editing in ArcMap 10.5.1

Thanks for these explanation. However, to me editing derived data is not desirable, neither good practice. This process is for the time being far too slow for editing and symbol alignments are not possible. Perhaps symbols overrides will solve the problem with future ArcGIS Pro releases and hopefully with good performance. It looks like ArcGIS Pro has not (yet) been designed for users with traditional mapping workflows, focusing on ArcGIS Online instead. In addition to editing symbols, editing annotation lacks lots of basics control, such as leader lines ending, accent bars not available, graticule, extent indicators for insets... https://community.esri.com/thread/203823-arcgis-pro-20-how-to-move-end-of-leader-line In order to take advantage of the improved graphic engines of ArcGIS Pro and better PDF exports, I prepare all my layers in Pro for symbolizaztion and I continue all my symbols and annotations editing, as well as graticule, in ArcMap 10.5.1. After, I compile all my layers in Adobe Illustrator. Not ideal but it works! ArcGIS Pro - Export to Illustrator

In addition to my post and after some investigation, opening Annotation Feature Class containing symbols in ArcGIS Pro is not possible to edit (in the Edit mode under the Contents pane, there is an exclamation mark saying "Annotation is not editable". Also, upgrading the Annotation Feature Class containing symbols fails. As for the Cartography Toolbox, in particular the Add Representations, is not yet implemented in ArcGIS Pro: Tools that are not available in ArcGIS Pro—Appendices | ArcGIS Desktop This clearly leaves no option to edit (move) manually symbols in the map to produce and end product! To me, it makes ArcGIS Pro unusable...

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I cannot decipher all the python Five Color Tool, but I still cannot understand either why it references to certain Desktop10.5 toolboxes... I cannot point out lines of code asking such toolboxes. Where you comment helped is with my own Python script. Some of them did not work in Pro, and just removing references to Desktop10.5 toolboxes references made my scripts working in Pro! #ArcGIS 10.5.1 #arcpy.AddToolbox("C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.5\ArcToolbox\Toolboxes\Analysis Tools.tbx") #arcpy.AddToolbox("C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.5\ArcToolbox\Toolboxes\Data Management Tools.tbx")

I finally took some time to try out the Five Color Tool. In ArcGIS Pro 2.0 it produced an error whereas in ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 it worked well. Although the tool did not behave as expected. Ii only calculated integers from 0 to 3, just like if integer 4 was not existing! However, as shown below, is there anything wrong with the geoprocessing framework (Python in particular) in ArcGIS Pro? Or any wrong settings on my machine?

In ArcMap, when editing annotation features in an Edit session, it is possible to click on the annotation itself to move it around and/or to click at the end of the leader line to adjust it if necessary. In ArcGIS Pro, it is possible to easily click an annotation and move it around (despite I found it very slow), but how it is possible to adjust end of leader lines? This is illustrated below. The mouse pointer shows the end of the leader line.

In ArcGIS 10.5.1, for producing printed maps, I usually right-click layers and "convert features to graphics" in order to edit symbols in cluttered area. In addition, instead of converting into Annotation Groups in which there is no control on ordering, I "convert features to graphics" into empty Annotation Feature Class, stored in my project File GDB. It works well. In ArcGIS Pro .aprx projects, unfortunately, Annotation Groups (formely stored in .mxd with ArcMap) do not exist. I thought I could still convert features to graphics in Annotation Feature Class with ArcGIS Pro but I cannot find any function to do that. I am stuck! In ArcGIS Pro, there must be a way to "convert" symbol to graphics for editing? At least I would expect the equivalent of Cartographic representation but I cannot find it either. And Cartographic representation usually needs a Standard or Advanced license. Any help is very welcome

Hi, I confirm Marco's comment as I had to investigate this issue last week. ArcGIS Pro produces true vector in .pdf output and not the vectors "snapped to dpi coordinate grid" set with the dpi parameter. Dpi in ArcGIS Pro only matters for raster layers in the .pdf. ArcGIS Pro .pdf exports are much smarter. In the files attached, when zoomed in Acrodat Reader at 500%, you can clearly see the ArcMap snapping effect. As a result, ArcGIS Pro produces .pdf files much larger than ArcMap. For my test map, ArcMap output 2Mb vs ArcGIS Pro 25Mb! For the time being, I experimented 2 workarounds: *In Adobe Illustrator, I imported the 25mb .pdf and just resaving as .pdf reduces the file size down to 13Mb! Then, simplifying line vectors by only 1% and the newly exported .pdf was about 7Mb. However, what is the effect of only 1% simplification in terms of actual vector shifts (and actual shift in meters)? Is it acceptable? For printed maps, you can hardly notice the 1% simplification and it removes about 80% of the vertex. But I would prefer to apply this vector simplification when exporting .pdf directly from ArcGIS Pro. Also, the Illustrator option leads to another problem, importing and manipulating .pdf file in Illustrator is cumbersome for simplification operation. And unfortunately, .ai exports are not available in ArcGIS Pro... *In Adobe Reader Pro, the only workaround I can suggest to keep and deliver a smaller .pdf for printing/viewing is to rasterize the .pdf. This can be done with flattening to 100% raster. Flattened at 300dpi, my new .pdf is 1.2Mb! A regular 300dpi .png export is 2.2Mb. Again, ArcGIS Pro could include an option to rasterize completely the .pdf for printing/viewing purposes. Hope this helps

I am migrating to ArcGIS Pro 2.0 and encountering difficulties to connect to an Oracle database. I get a dialog box showing a Connection Error (attached). Is it related to a missing database client software on my machine? Or anything wrong with the parameters? In ArcCatalog, I used to have Application Server set for the Database Platform parameter, which I cannot find in the ArcGIS Pro dialog box. I used Oracle instead. Also, with the ArcGIS Pro dialog form, I cannot specify the Database name... Any help?

Thanks Dan, but nothing more for the 4-color style, apart from a few comments at the end of the article. I wonder if there is a new script for ArcGIS Pro 2.0 (or ArcGIS 10.5.1) to compute integers in a field of a polygon file which are then used for symbolizing 4-color style...

Hi, Since ArcGIS Desktop 9, I always found the four color theorem great to symbolized to depict layers with a lot of polygons (such as census tracts) so that no two adjacent polygons have the same color. It used to be called "Map Coloring - Four Color a Map" and basically applied the 4-color map theorem to a polygon file by adding a column with integers. Howerver, it never really worked under ArcGIS Desktop 10 and was desperate to use it again, as explained here: https://community.esri.com/thread/27844 I now installed ArcGIS Pro 2.0 and perhaps ESRI included this symbolization style in their new GIS desktop application? For the time being, I cannot find anything such as "4-color map" tool... Is it somewhere included? Or is there any workaround or script with the new ArcGIS Pro 2.0? Thanks
