ArcGIS Server 10.1 SP 1 Windows 64-bit OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Service Pack 1 I set up SSL and https on my arcgis server (NDEP-25), and it seemed to be working. I can go to this internal website (https://ndep-25/arcgis/rest/services), but get the browser error ??There is a problem with this website??s security certificate.? When I click ??Continue to this website (not recommended)?, I can connect fine. I thought this was acceptable until I tried to make a secure connection in ArcCatalog to the map services on NDEP-25. I'm getting errors that the certificate is untrusted. See attached screenshots of errors. I tried to install the certificate by ??Automatically selecting the certificate store based on the type of certificate?. It says the import was successful, but I still get errors about the certificate not being trusted. I??m currently using a self-signed certificate generated from ArcGIS Server. The Web Adaptor works. I successfully completed the instructions at http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/Enabling_SSL_using_the_default_self_signed_certificate/0154000005wq000000/ If I click Yes to proceed on both warning windows, I can connect to the map services. However, this is not a good practice. We need these map services to be truly secure. Any suggestions Network Gurus!?! [ATTACH=CONFIG]20957[/ATTACH]

I just received help from ESRI tech support, Melissa J. The key is to paste the feature dataset onto the ArcSDE connection....not within the workspace (inside the directory for the SDE connection). Right click on the SDE connection and select paste. Check to make sure there are no red text entries which would indicate that there's a file with the same name that already exists. Click OK. It worked. Yeah!! [ATTACH=CONFIG]18627[/ATTACH]

When I try to copy the entire feature dataset from the file geodatabase into the feature dataset in ArcSDE, I get the error: "Failed to paste. The operation is not supported by this implementation." When I try to copy the feature dataset into ArcSDE (outside the feature dataset), it copies everything but the geometric network and it copies everything to the root directory - not a feature dataset where I want it. Again, there is nothing in the feature dataset that I'm trying to copy into, so there's no files to interfere. The feature dataset is a valid location because I can copy single feature classes to it. I just can't get that geometric network to copy. I will try rebooting my machine and see if that helps.

I'm trying to copy a geometric network (National Hydrography Dataset) from a feature dataset in a file geodatabase to an ArcSDE feature dataset. The projection on the two feature datasets are the same. When I use the copy and paste commands on a feature class in the geometric network, it only copies that feature class - not the network. When I use the copy and paste command on the network itslef, I get the error "Failed to paste HYDRO_NET", General function failure"....not very helpful. I have also tried to export and import the feature class, but each time it only copies the feature class and not the network. This ESRI doc says that if you use the copy tool on a feature class that is in a geometric network, the entire network including the feature class will be copied. But when I try this, I get Error 000260: The "in_memory" workspace is not supported as the output location. I tried also to copy the geometric network directly and got the same error message. The feature dataset that I'm trying to copy into is totally blank, so nothing should be interfering with the copy process. I found this article that says the in_memory workspace does not support geometric networks and network datasets. So what's up with that? Either I can copy a geometric network or I can't? Any suggestions about how I can copy an entire feature dataset from a file geodatabase into a feature dataset in ArcSDE??? Basically I need to keep the geometric network and its associated feature classes together.

I've been searching for the answer to this question too. I found this article which seems to imply that ArcSDE is only needed for "versioned geodatabases". http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/57375-Why-would-I-install-ArcSDE-with-10.1

For the correct way to setup the Oracle database client on a computer with ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop installed, see alassom's post earlier in this thread. It worked for me... 1) installing both the 64 and 32 bit version of the oracle client I recommend choosing the first install option. Or else make sure to include the Instant Client Package during a custom install. 2) placing the 64 bit path before the 32 bit path in the path system variable Open My Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings On the Advanced Tab, Click Environment Variables In the System Variables section, scroll down to the "Path" variable, select it and click Edit. Make sure the directory for the 64 bit client is placed before the 32bit client. 3) creating a system variable TNS_ADMIN that points to the folder containing the tnsnames.ora file. From the Environmental Variables window, click New under the System variables section. Variable Name = TNS_ADMIN Variable value = The directory location of your tnsnames.ora file As far as the map service trying to copy your data onto the server when you don't want it to, please see this article. It might help. Good Luck! http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/Copying_data_to_the_server_automatically_when_publishing/0154000003rn000000/

Like kumarnv, I too was able to register the database through ArcCatalog and not ArcGIS Server Manager. My initial problem when registering was due to a corrupt ArcGIS Server session. I restarted the ArcGIS Server service, then registered the database through ArcCatalog - it worked fine. kumarnv, I wonder if the map document you are trying to publish contains layers that come from a different database connection than the one that you registered with ArcGIS Server. For example, I may have registered a data source using an SDE connection setup for a direct connect with the SDE user. But in my map document, I could be using datasets that are pulling from another SDE connection that is setup using the credentials of a different user account - one that hasn't been registered with ArcGIS Server. Does that make sense?

When I install ArcGIS Viewer for Flex on my local machine, I have to specify my own computer's IP address for the web server base folder URL. If I then copy a created site from my computer to the server, isn't the IP address information from my computer going to cause the app not to work on the server? Regardless, I can't install Flex Viewer on my computer. It doesn't like my web base folder settings. Do I need to enable IIS on my personal computer in order to create Flex maps?

I just tried to run the Flex Viewer as Administrator, but have the same problem. I will try the workaround you suggested. Creating it on my computer, then copying it over to the server. Still, I feel like there is just some small port or permission not open on the server that could fix it. And if the Flex Viewer can't get out to the ESRI basemaps....what else is being blocked that might be important in the future for ArcGIS Server functionality. Thanks for your help.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]18210[/ATTACH] I'm on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. It seems to be locked down like Fort Knox compared to Server 2003. I'm creating my first web app in ArcGIS Viewer for Flex 3.0. Under the Basemaps and operation layers > Basemaps, none of the ESRI basemaps are showing up. The tab says [object Object]. The error I see is "Could not connect to Portal. HTTP request error". I have allowed the sites "www.esri.com" and "www.arcgis.com" through the Trusted Sites in the Internet Explorer security options. But it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

I am trying to register an ArcSDE 10.0 SP 4 database (Oracle 11G R2) as a data source in ArcGIS Server 10.1. Without the Publishing Tools geoprocessing service running, I tried to register, and the process ran overnight - no errors, but it didn't finish. The database is 5.1 TB. Does it normally take a long time to register a data source this large? Or could it be that it is failing to complete because the Publishing Tools service is not running?

ESRI tech support said that even if you have a one-machine setup, ports 4000-4003 still need to be open. I thought clustering was for multiple machines, but you can have a cluster with just one machine. ESRI's documentation makes it appears as if clustering is optional, but it is not. Good to know.

I have ArcGIS Server 10.1 installed on Windows Server 2008 and am using the "one machine" approach where the ArcGIS Server and the web server are on the same machine. I have the Web Adapter installed. I cannot start the Publishing Tools geoprocessing service and get this error: "Failed to start the server machine xxxx. Error while starting AppServer. Required port '4,000' already in use.' My understanding from the install documentation (http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/install-guides/arcgis-server/10.1/index.html#//01nm00000025000000) is that ports 4000-4003 only need to be open if you have multiple machines as GIS servers. Is this correct or do I need to open these ports to publish a map service using a one machine setup?

Now I'm getting the error on both the server and my workstation which at least makes things more consistent. I think yesterday I was testing it using different SDE accounts. I uploaded my script. It runs through all the SDE accounts and copies the feature classes, rasters, tables and feature datasets from one server to another. There are feature datasets in other accounts, such as BAQP. The script runs fine through the BAQP account which has three feature datasets; no errors. But when it hits the BCA account with one feature dataset, I get error 000979. In ArcCatalog, I can right click and copy the feature dataset from one server and paste it into the second server within the BCA accounts. No errors. However, if I use the guie ArcToolboox Copy tool, I immediately see error 000979 pop up. When I run the arcpy code, I also see error 000979. ArcSDE Server 1 and 2 (Windows 2003 Server 32-bit) Workstation (Window 7 64-bit) Here's a small example of failing code:
import arcpy
from arcpy import env
env.workspace = r'Database Connections\BCA_NDEP24.sde'
arcpy.Copy_management(r'Database Connections\BCA_NDEP24.sde\BCA.SHPO',
r'Database Connections\BCA_NDEP23.sde\BCA.SHPO_copy', "FeatureDataset")
Runtime error <class 'arcgisscripting.ExecuteError'>: ERROR 000979: Cannot copy between different workspaces.
