I have not found a way in ArcGIS OnLine Web Mapping Applications nor Web Maps to limit how far users can zoom in or out. It is possible if there is a cached base map, but not otherwise. Setting scale dependencies and limits on REST services and layers does not negate this need. That will stop the layers from being displayed, but still allow scales that may cause users confusion, frustrations, and problems. Setting a default scale and extent will also fail to address this. This function was possible in an older ESRI platform, ArcGIS for Flex, by specifying LODs. Does anyone know if this is possible? Example of my user's problems: Have a global map showing total population by country. The current setup allows a user to zoom in very tight (like to 1:1,147) of automatically zooms to such a scale after searching for a point location. At that scale the user will most likely be deep inside one country's polygon requiring them to have to pan and zoom back out many times to see another country to compare to.

Currently in a Web Map, it is not possible to have full control over the drawing order if there is a mixture of REST services with and without the layer numbers specified. Those layers with a layer number specified have to draw over and those without a number specified. This may seem like a small problem, as one could republish the layers in new REST services to eliminate this. However, REST services creation takes time and hosting them uses server resources.

In ArcGIS Online, both Web Maps and Web Mapping Applications have a default color set for selected polygons. The polygon boundary is highlighted in cyan and the polygon highlighted in a semi-transparent brown. (See image below) While clearing the selection will remove this highlight, many inexperienced users may not think to do that. Also experienced users with concerns regarding color choices may worry changing the color of a thematically colored layer is unacceptable. Some Web Mapping Application templates do change this, however, I have found they then change too many other things to be acceptable. It seems like it would be easy to allow selection color to be controlled in all Web Maps and Web Mapping Applications.

Neither ArcGIS OnLine Web Mapping Applications nor Web Maps allow authors to limit how far users can zoom in or out. It is possible if there is a cached base map, but not possible otherwise. Setting scale dependencies and limits on REST services and layers does not negate this need. That will stop the layers from being displayed, but still allow scales that may cause users confusion, frustrations and problems. Setting a default scale and extent will also fail to address this. This function was possible in an older ESRI platform, ArcGIS for Flex, by specifying LODs. Example 1: A global map showing total population by country allows a user to zoom in to 1:1,000. At that scale the user will most likely be deep inside one country's polygon requiring them to have to pan and zoom many times to see another country to compare to. Example 2: A map shows child poverty rates by Census blocks to three counties in southwest VA. A user may zoom out to 1:73,000,000 to see the entire country. At that scale, the displayed Census data will not be visually obvious and hard to find again. This is similar to another idea submitted in 2013, however, this request is simpler. I am just asking for scale limits without a lock on panning, a harder feature to implement.

That option is only available if your base data is cached.

Just would like to add some detail, but still may add my own issue. I have found there is a method to limit the ability to zoom in, however, only when the base layer is cached. Would be nice to control this limit regardless of the layer types.

There are some app templates with such a search function? This is shocking and wonderful news to me. I have been searching and not able to find any examples.

Jeff thanks for your answers. Sadly this will not work for me. I do have a geocoding available on the Servers, but other users need to be able to use the World GeoCoder. I plan to write something up for ESRI IDeas. Would be nice to control what GeoCoders are used for what applications. Also know searching if there is a search-like widget that will meet my needs. I found a JavaScript one but am not permitted to use JavaScript for this application.

Is it possible to turn off the ESRI World Geocoder, or at least not return or mask the results, when a users uses the search and a layer is defined. I have an app in which I need to limit the search returns, the US Gov does not allow any non-approved place names to be in their web map applications.

I have also checked to see if the REST service's Legend were being reversed. They are no in the cases I could reproduce, logical, since sometimes it is just not a single service being reversed but the order of multiple services being reversed. I going to assume there is no cure nor fix for this and it is just a permanent bug in the Flex Viewer.

I do not know and could not find an answer in a quick search. However, I know there are recommendations from ESRI on the maxinum number of layers per REST service, and I think your are far exceeding that. A few years back I had a manager demand we have 86 layers per REST service and it brought our super roubust servers nearly to a halt.

Further information on this. I have also noticed it during testing with the 10.11 generated services. I now suspect it is a bug of the widget regardless of the service's version.

I was just able to get it to show in Firefox 24.7 as well. Also got a screen shoot. The left one is the reversed order, the right one is the normal order. I tried browser refresh, restart with cache cleared, using IE instead of Firefox without it reverting to the correct order. Then I went and got coffee and when I returned it was back to normal. This time is was just reordering the layers and not the symbols.

I am using version 3.6 of the Dynamic Legend Widget with the Flex Viewer version 3.6.5. It was perfect through all testing using 10.11 services. I am now testing it with 10.22 services and have noticed two odd and very intermittent inconsistencies. First, usually the drawing order is as expected, but occasionally it will load in the opposite order. And this opposite applies to both the order of layers and the order of the symbology classes. Second, occasionally it will increase the size of the representative symbols. It will load with squares twice the size of normal. It is so uncommon to see the errors I have not captured a screen shot yet. Sometimes they happen together some times separately. I have only seen it in IE 9.0.8, but have not done much testing with other browsers. A refresh will usually cure it. My confiq file is very simple and below. <configuration> <excludeLayers> <excludeLayer mapservice="Query">0</excludeLayer> <excludeLayer mapservice="Query">1</excludeLayer> <excludeLayer mapservice="Query">2</excludeLayer> </excludeLayers> <excludeGraphicLayers>true</excludeGraphicLayers> <excludebasemaplayers>true</excludebasemaplayers> </configuration> Any ideas? Should I report it is a bug?
