Regardless of how the tiles are generated, the tiles have to be stored on the server. That is discouraged since this group's servers are almost always out of disc space. I know that must make people roll their eyes, but it typical for US Gov workplaces. Disc space is cheap these days, but the paperwork to get it is not.

Thanks, but it is simply not possible for me to cache this data. The hosting group here at the U.S. Census strongly discourages using caching. It is considered too much of a load on server resources.

I suspect it is highly dependent on what part of the Federal Gov you are working at. The US Census, with more than a century of practice at the art of cartography, may be a tougher reviewer than most. Of course, The US Census has already produced and approved some AGOL story maps.

Hello: I would like to add each layer with the layer number defined, but, let's be honest that can be a lot of work. Some of my REST services have 10 layers that are all needed (ex: national and 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th level subnational boundaries that change symbology depending on scale) and adding each one is a lot of work. Hello: My layers are in a mix of different REST services. This new app needs some from each of the services, but not all of them. I cannot make any changes to these RESt services as they are in a locked secure environment, the typical dev, stage, publish web server setup. The services were made for an older project and it costs me money to ask the hoster to add more. My hope is to mash up these services into the order I need without publishing them. It appears it is simply not possible without a system change by ESRI. I think it is warranted, as many customers are limiting in the number of REST services they can have.

I sent it to the reviewers with the brown and they rejected it. Said it is a killer fault and the project cannot proceed.

Problem is I have my own required base map right now and therefor cannot use the ESRI base maps as well. I am making the assumption that if you have two base maps, you must have the base map chooser enabled and I cannot have that. I cannot allow user to turn on any of the typical ESRI base maps in this application. BTW, I will test my assumption later this week. Why can I not have the base map chooser with the typical ESRI base maps? The US DOS does not allow any US Gov agency to use the ESRI base maps. The country names, coastlines, and boundaries are not the approved US Gov ones so thay cannot be used on any US Gov product. And yes, I know of many examples violating this rule, but that does not change the rule. Ray Crew

Hi Kelly: Jake's idea above only works with cached data. I consider that an oversight on ESRI part, but that is the way it is. I still need to have user zoom in to different levels, so cutting it out completely will not work. And presentations will not work as navigating around the map and exploring the data is too important. And on the idea to support, I am the one who submitted that. The only support so far has been me, so let me petition to you to vote it up. Raymond

Hello Jake: That option appears to only be enabled if there is a cached data layer. I am toying with making a transparent cached layer just to enable that, but that seems like an awful waste of time and server resources to simply control zoom. Ray

I fear you are correct, which is a killer for me. The US Census security folks will not allow me to work with Javascript unless I am willing to go through a full security review. That will take 40 hours of my time to fill out the paperwork and then I will have to wait multiple months for an answer.

Currently in a Web Map, it seems not possible to have full control over the drawing order if there is a mixture of REST services with and without the layer numbers specified. Those layers with a layer number specified have to draw over and those without a number specified. This may seem like a small problem, as one could republish the layers in new REST services to eliminate this. However, REST services creation takes time and hosting them uses server resources. Does anyone have a trick for controlling this?

In ArcGIS Online, both Web Maps and Web Mapping Applications, seem to have a default color set for selected polygons. The polygon boundary is highlighted in cyan and the polygon highlighted in a semi-transparent brown. (See image below) While clearing the selection will removes the highlight, many inexperienced users may not think to do that. Users have also been confused with the coloring, thinking the value or class of the polygon has been changed to something else. Some Web Mapping Application templates do change the color, but I have found they then change too many other things to be acceptable. Does anyone know how to allow selection color to be controlled in all Web Maps and Web Mapping Applications? I have tried all I know from the MXD used to make the REST service to all available options in Web Maps and Web Mapping Applications. This is a big enough deal for my reviewers to kill the project without a solution. My dream is to keep the cyan boundary and have a no color highlight for the polygon. Am considering adding a separate line layer, but am hoping to avoid that.
