Thanks Jon. That actually makes me feel much more comfortable with trying the federation since it can be undone without loss of the Server services. I still have other reservations about it, similar to Shawn's since we do also share secure services through web pages and web apps. So, I will continue to watch this thread, that will be something that will need to be tested on our end. Shawn, hopefully these questions help for you too. I wasn't trying to hijack your thread, but think they are inline with your questions.

The tough part now is that you have a bunch of duplicate items within the Portal. At this point, you'll need to compare the item ID that the service is storing through the Admin API with the item ID's in your My Content page and delete the item that is a duplicate. Jon, I actually haven't seen a federated Portal and Server yet, but I know that Portal controls the security. ( I probably should go look at some videos that show this.) Q1: when federated, do you still have service in Server and can they be in folders? Q2: are services in Portal separate from these? Or, are the item numbers you mention actually pointing to the Server services. The reason I ask is, if you unfederate... Q3: what causes the item ID duplication? Q4: will your Server services still be there and possibly in folders, or do they all need to be recreated? Since I am getting questions about federating our setup, which I am discouraging at this time due to being in the middle of our upgrade. But, I'm trying to gather information like shawnm.miller is asking in this thread, so I hopefully give an unbiased and informative opinion once things settle down. Everything seems to be pushing the federation, but there are still good reasons not to do it. So, knowing what might be lost if we push the federation and then decide it isn't working will be valuable.

Since this is such an old thread, you may want to start a new question and include the version of ArcGIS and Excel that you are using. Also, if you have tried anything else yet. If you put it as a question, you will get more views/responses (because this was converted from the old forums, it is a discussion not a question now) https://community.esri.com/community/help-and-feedback/blog/2016/08/15/community-news-and-tips-how-to-ask-questions-and-get-answers?sr=search&searchId=107a1794-c7d6-4a9f-8175-80ab6c408f3f&searchIndex=0 and for posting code https://community.esri.com/docs/DOC-8691-posting-code-with-syntax-highlighting-on-geonet?sr=search&searchId=147963f0-1912-4d7d-afc4-c83c6594372a&searchIndex=8

I had similar problems with WAB 2.5, but I think it was resolved in 2.7, but I don't think mine was a browser type issue. For me, I realized I had set something in AGOL that caused issues. My note in my support ticket was "After removing the ArcGIS server from the "Allow Origins" list, the user is able to fire up the WAB developer edition from the AGOL account." That may not be your problem. More likely, there is a setting in the IE11 that is causing issues. Sorry, I don't have any more advice to offer right now, other than to use Edge or another browser like Chrome. It may be a browser version security issue, and turning on the developer tools (usually F12) in the different browsers to watch the network traffic can sometimes give you hints on what the issue may be. There are a few other threads about this issue, although of course I can't find them right now. You may want to thik about starting a new question with you particulars (make sure to include you WAB version) rather than in the coments here. https://community.esri.com/community/help-and-feedback/blog/2016/08/15/community-news-and-tips-how-to-ask-questions-and-get-answers?sr=search&searchId=5e93234d-7e71-48e1-aab2-2d318e7a976a&searchIndex=0 btw - I need to update this particular blog I see....still shows 2.5 as latest....we are up to 2.7. ....never ending.

Ah yes, typos happen. I saw the missing quote and didn't go beyond that since need to fix the obvious errors first. Looks like you have it resolved now.

Tom, KKramer-esristaff 's tip will work if you only have one or a few machines. If only a few machines, you can look at all the UMD and do a process of elimination. If hundreds (or whatever is too much), I would contact you customer service rep. BTW - I always make sure to set a (not too long) timeout value for any borrowed and offline licenses. At least that will auto return eventually. Q: maybe for Kory - I know when you can give an an alias to a Pro machine vs the default name. Can this be found anywhere

Excellent Q&A post. Good, clearly stated questions and clear answers. Now for a users point of view, my opinions only. I think that the federated Enterprise, with Pro are the way we all will be pushed in the not too distant future. Many of the workflows that are being developed and presented at the Developer Summit, the UC, etc are expecting this. Many of the app (mobiles, studios, dashboards) want a named user from a portal (whether AGOL or Portal). And the fact that Pro will not publish to ArcGIS Server direct all seems to have the writing on the wall. However, that does not mean that you have to federate right away. For a number of reasons (including being in the middle of 10.2.x to 10.5.1 upgrade and limited time), we are not federating yet. But I get many questions as to why. The upgrade is the main reason at this time, but I can see that this will be complete, and the topic will come up again. Talking to a few other (mid-size) organizations last week at the Dev Summit, it seems that I am not the only one that has a bit of hesitation to make the switch. (my guess is it is a one way switch...once federated, it probably would be a major project to reverse....backup first??) For me, the main reason I do not want to federate is that Portal then takes over control of the security of ArcGIS Server services. We have some secure services that are accessed thru a proxy for public JavaScript web pages. Looking at this thread Generate token for Federated ArcGIS Server through webadaptor my concerns of getting this to work the way we want (or have it now) are at least partially confirmed. That doesn't mean that it isn't possible, but more research and testing will need to be done. We also have not had Portal up and running before, but especially with the unlimited Level 1 (read-only) named user accounts, that does at least resolve the issue of not being able to afford to provide intern sites. So, we'll see how that all plays out. With all that said, as Jonathon pointed out, you might already be half way there with your federation with AGOL. So, then you have to weigh the need for extra features of federation vs the things you may lose (i.e. AGS managed security... and maybe service organization?). I tried to get a clear answer last week at the dev summit as to what the process is, how hard, and if it will mess up setting up things as we have it, then federating at a later date "in-place". I was not able to get any clear answer. So, this may not help in your decision, but it is another perspective.

I would keep an eye out Recent Proceedings for some of the talks and handouts. As for recordings, they are usually posted Esri Videos | E360 Videos: GIS, Events, ArcGIS Products & Industries and I believe the plenary is already there. There is also a few youtube channels where they most likely will be posted esri - YouTube I was told that they should be available for free (minus the road ahead sessions, which are never posted) for one year (not sure if that is from posting or from Dev Summit start...or ??). If you want them longer, possibly sooner, and streaming and/or on a thumbdrive, you can usually purchase them Welcome to Esri Online | Esri Online and they have a reduced price right now...you can get the Dev and UC (when they are out) in a bundle.

do you have a mxd.save() anywhere in your script? Edit: never mind...just saw it. But I thik it needs to be indented. Looks like you would only be saving the last mxd changed. But haven't looked closely at your code (short on time). I have an addin if you are interested in using, or just reviewing the code. /blogs/myAlaskaGIS/2015/08/31/python-addin-for-data-inventory-and-broken-link-repair?sr=search&searchId=3771fb19-dc97-4e17-b98f-adf107ab692b&searchIndex=2

I've always assumed that the FedUC is limited to (US) federal agencies, but I am not 100% sure. Another way to compare the sessions, etc. from the different events is to look at the Recent Proceedings for each. Also, the youtube sites like esri - YouTube and the Esri Videos | E360 Videos: GIS, Events, ArcGIS Products & Industries have many of the tech sessions recorded, you can take a look at those to see if they differ much. The Develop Summit (that was help last week) is also a very good conference, and focuses on techie/development, vs the more general/all-encompassing UC.
