In order to participate in ESRI's Community Maps Program, apparently we have to provide the data using ESRI's Local Government Information Model. I cannot find the model to use with ArcEditor 9.3.1. We plan to submit street centerlines and waterbodies. Can anybody out there point me in the direction of what the LGDM standards are for those feature classes? Thanks large

You do not need to type in "ft", "foot" or "feet", just use the numeric value. Be sure your COGO preferences are set to Foot or Feet.

If you need to calculate poly areas often, you might consider using the X-Tools extension. I use it on our parcel layer containing 18,000 polygons, as well as on smaller layers. There are probably other scripts, available free from the ESRI web site, which may help you.

Tarik - if you are in the USA, you may be able to get US Department of Agriculture aerial imagery from 2007 or 2009 as a free MrSID download. It's the imagery Google uses for our state. As for tracing building footprints - either manually creating polygon features one at a time, or buying image-analysis software such as ERDAS (now Leica) Imagine.

Nice. Well, for those on ArcGIS 10, there is built-in functionality to do this. Open the Layer Properties dialog box > Fields tab. Click the field and set the Highlight property to Yes. This will make it stand out in places like the attribute table and the Attributes and Identify windows. Also available, by default I believe, in ArcGIS 9xx

have you have ruled out just deleting the circle and recreating it using the correct radius? I tried that but all my circles came out curiously polar bear-shaped. Seriously though, how does one draw a circle centered on a specific point on the ground (not a point feature)?

I access the metadata editor in 9.3.1 this way - In ArcCatalog, find the shapefile/featureclass using the left-hand window in Catalog. Select the file, and in the right-hand Catalog window, click the Metadata tab. There is a metadata editor toolbar with icons for editing, importing, exporting metadata. The toolbar can be turned on by going to the View menu and selecting Toolbars and putting a check mark next to Metadata. The toolbar also has a pulldown menu of style sheets, including FGDC. You can change the default metadata editor in Catalog by going to the Tools menu, then Options. At the bottom of the Metadata tab is a pulldown menu. There is an excellent editor for 9.3.1 called "Three Tab Editor 1.9" available free from the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, native Americans, online.

Hello everyone, I'm quite new to ArcGIS and ArcMap, and am trying to learn the basics. One thing that has me stumped, however, is making a layer editable so I can create features. I have no problems with the tutorial data, but when I go to do it on my own, I do not know how to make a layer editable. Maybe I'm making the layer wrong? I right click on "Layers" in my Table of Contents, and click on "Create New Group Layer". However, I can't even find the symbology tab for said layer, it's simply not there. Anybody who can point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated. Scott - 1) Are you using ArcEditor? 2) Which version, eg 9.3.1 or 10? 3) Do you have the layer you wish to edit in your table of contents? In ArcEditor 9.3.1 - To add a layer the basic way - in the Table of Contents, right-click on Layer and choose Add Data To edit a layer - find the Main menu, pull down View, then Tools, and place a checkmark next to Editor. The Editor toolbar will appear on screen. On the toolbar, click on the pulldown arrow next to Editor and choose Start Editing. You also save edits and stop editing from this pulldown menu.

Mike - I thought we had it figured out, but .... I sent both blocks of html code to the person who maintains our web page, and she is having problems. Is there any way you or another expert could call her and walk her through the process? If not, here's what she told me - If she copies a block of code in its entirety, she gets an error message like "page can not be read." If she omits the frame formatting code up to the "http://xxxxxxxx" portion, the map will load, but scroll controls are not visible, and the map is unconfined, fills the entire page. From what I can understand, she is coding our home page manually, not using any page building software or templates. Thanks, Tim

What exactly do you want to do? Mike, thanks for the reply. I'm trying to send the code along to the person who maintains our county web site. So I should instead paste the code into a text document and send as an e-mail attachment? Tim PS, oddly enough, the first block of code, for the other map with imagery, opens nicely from an e-mail - to the map ... color me puzzled ...

... extra spaces ... Mike - forget the extra spaces, they're being added when I paste my code into the ArcGIS forum chat window. When I look at the code I have on my computer, there are no spaces. So we're back to square 1. FYI, here's what I've been doing. 1 - publish & share map 2 - Copy code from "embed in web site" window, the code we've been talking about 3 - Paste that code into a new e-mail message 3a - Save the e-mail as a draft (but not sent) 4 - Open the e-mail message, Ctrl-click to test the links 5 - The one block of code appears to have 2 links, see attached JPEG "roads_code" 6 - When I click on the first link, it takes me to the site shown in attached JPEG "roads2" 6a - when I click on the second link, it takes me to the site shown in attached JPEG "roads1" 7 - Here are the 2 URLs, copied from Firefox - http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/embedViewer.html?webmap=17bc60b3d4084eaab11c42406e9ff186&bing=true&zoom=true&scale=true http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=17bc60b3d4084eaab11c42406e9ff186 Thanks

Should the entire block of code be added to a web page, or where should it be broken into 2 blocks? Thanks again.

You've found a bug! We have a problem displaying image services when embedded. Mike Mike - I've stored 2 maps on ArcGIS.com. One uses the ArcGIS.com imagery basemap, the other uses the Bing Roads basemap. I shared both publicly, and selected Embed in Personal Site. I then copied each html code and pasted it into an e-mail. When I click on the link to the imagery map, it eventually loads, though it briefly says "this map is not available" When I click on the link to the roads-only map, it says "this map is not available" and NEVER loads. What gives? here's the code for the roads-only map - <iframe width="500" height="400" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/embedViewer.html?webmap=17bc60b3d4084eaab11c42406e9ff186&bing=true&zoom=true&scale=true"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=17bc60b3d4084eaab11c42406e9ff186" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left" target="_blank">View Larger Map</a></small> and for the imagery map - <iframe width="500" height="400" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/embedViewer.html?webmap=8c12042023c1402bb6eccfbca15e273c&zoom=true&scale=true">

1. you lose the map series tab which I found to be very useful for moving between pages to see how they look or as a super bookmark, and for exporting single maps, 3. I think you lose the option to suppress tiles and as noted in 1 to easily select only certain maps for export in a series, in favor of using a selection but selection queries require quite a few clicks and switches to the keyboard and back. I would add it cannot export to a georeferenced tif which mapbook never did but the zoom and export tool could for Views. If you convert an existing mapbook you will of course lose your map series and tags John - have you found any work-around for issues 1 & 3? To me, they are core issues. In fact, I may not upgrade to 10 if it means having to re-create all my 9.3.1 mxds that contain DSMapbook sets. The tools in 10 may be great for NEW work, but ........... Regards
