I would recommend upgrading the Enterprise Geodatabase to 10.2.2 or 10.3.1, then upgrade to 10.5. You will be required to make an "intermediate" leap in the upgrade process from 9.3.x --> 10.5. Please be sure to follow the upgrade documentation for each process. Also take a VERIFIED BACKUP of the database before attempting the upgrade process. I picked SQL Server as an example: Upgrade to 10.3.1: Upgrade an enterprise geodatabase in SQL Server—Help | ArcGIS Desktop then Upgrade to 10.5: Upgrade an enterprise geodatabase in SQL Server—Help | ArcGIS Desktop This should get you up and running.

I am not sure if there is something out yet. I would guess that there will be a lot more information coming out in the next few months.

Here is some documentation on editing the data via SQL (T-SQL for SQL Server). What type of data can be edited using SQL?—Help | ArcGIS Desktop It is not recommended to edit versioned data (ever) outside of a supported workflow. This could cause corruption within the Geodatabase and may not be apparent till a later date. Editing of versioned data can be done via the versioned view: What is a versioned view?—Help | ArcGIS Desktop I can tell you from experience that using unsupported workflows can make the GDB corrupt and cause you to have a bad day. What support is basically saying is this: If you use an unsupported workflow, it may be impossible for them to figure out what happened and/or provide a correction. Hope this helps! Geodatabase

Yeah running it in Citrix may not be the best with the current configuration. I can understand you stance, but I still believe that your machine is very under resourced. If you started to use Desktop with larger datasets and/or very complex analysis (Imagery processing) you may see some performance issues with just 4GB of RAM. I know that there are post in https://community.esri.com/?sr=search&searchId=35366b58-e1a9-46cf-83ba-8f8112eb44a0&searchIndex=1 that people ask about minimum specs for a machine.

I can see why it may be running slow (64-bit Pro vs. 32-bit Desktop). That amount of RAM for a 64-bit system does not seem like much. I am not even using Pro/Desktop and my machine consumes about 4-5 GB of RAM just using: Chrome, Outlook, Skype, OneNote and IE on Windows 10 O/S. This is less RAM that Windows 7 used for the same workload. I wonder if your machine is pegged out with the Physical RAM and using page file? I would think that it is not realistic of your employer, in my opinion, to expect you to do real geospatial analysis and editing with only 4 GB of RAM and not have some issues with the machine. Could send them the System Requirements documentation: ArcGIS Pro 1.4 system requirements—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop

Nothing more specific. You could turn on the SDEINTERCEPT on the client and see where the error is occurring? Deciphering Errors within ArcSDE | Support Services Blog When was the last time that a compress successfully completed? What version of ArcGIS client are you using? Are you using 3-tier connection or direct connections? Can you provide a workflow for the compress? Can the SDE user add features to a map and select over 100 of them? Try to select 200+ and see of that works?

I would open a case with Esri Technical Support and have them review the behavior to be certain. I can understand the matter of choice, but also agree it is not best practice.

I would you say that you should not put spaces in the file names. Here is some documented error messages that support that idea: 080020: Invalid output path.—Help | ArcGIS Desktop 001255: Input file name has spaces.—Help | ArcGIS Desktop 001256: Output file name has spaces.—Help | ArcGIS Desktop
