Thanks, all the color ramps display the same with the color at the high end of the ramp used for the low-land areas, same as in the image.

I am using ArcGIS for desktop, latest version. I used Spatial Analyst Hillshade tool and checked the box for Model Shadows to create a topo relief map. I don't like the look I get but I have tried every way to change the properties of the layer in ArcMap. Maybe the look I am able to get is limited by DEM data I am using? If I can somehow make this "relief" look better, that would be great but either way, I need to find a way to fix the low land areas. In the image below, the low areas are dark solid green. I the second image, below, from Google Maps, you can see that the low land areas are swamp/marsh. How can I change the color of this low land from from solid, dark green to something to indicate swamp? Is it a matter of doing something with the properties in AcrMap? Or, do I need to extract this solid, dark green data from the DEM data so that I can have it as a separate layer which I can represent with a swamp/marsh symbol? If that is the case, how do I separate the DEM data? Thanks, for any help you can offer. Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks for the help. Sorry, for all the questions but this is all new to me. I already have a terrain DEM raster. After I create the bathymetry DEM raster, then I use the Set Null feature of the Spatial Analyst tool to define areas of "no data", do I define the areas of no data on the newly created bathymetry DEM raster and also on the terrain DEM Raster that I already have? For the bathymetry, everything not in those lakes is no data and for the terrain, the specific lakes on the bathymetry raster get marked as non data?

I think I can figure out how to mask the lakes out of the DEM data. Then, how do I mark the "no data" area? Also, I have a shape file with contour lines for the lake depths, what order are the steps to convert to DEM and mask out everything but the lakes with contour lines? Do I first use TopoToRaster, and does that give me a shape file? Then do I mask the shape file leaving only the lakes with depth data, then, somehow mark the non-lake depth areas as no-data?

Thanks Curtis, I agree with Dan that the lakes are small and the contour lines are tight so the effect might not show up much on the map but I'm new to all this and I am interested in checking out this option for future use and also to see how it looks on the largest of the lakes. I found some good instructions on converting polygons to line at the link below, but I couldn't find anything about assigning an elevation. Is Elevation one of the properties after I convert to line? Or, is the elevation the z-factor or something like that? It sounds like I assign elevation to the entire line shape file (or whatever is output from the conversion tool) and that elevation is used as the base level that the contour lines drop down from. http://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/tools/data-management-toolbox/polygon-to-line.htm

I see what you mean, if I did succeed, the result would be so great. I guess I'll just use the contour lines the same as contour lines on land and forget about changing the water color depending on the water depth. I will add the labels showing the depth. The image below is the size that the printed map will be. Hopefully, when you click on the image you will get a full size version.

Thanks Dan, I don't need to stick with vector, whatever will do the job best. Is there a better (raster) way to use the contour lines to show lake depth?

I am using ArcMap Desktop. I have a shape file with contour lines for about eight lakes in an area of about 15 square miles. The picture below is to give an idea of the distance between lakes and the picture at the bottom is a more zoomed in view of some of the lakes. I already have DEM data for the white area in the pictures. I would like to use the contours lines in the lakes to make DEM data which I could then adjust to make the shallower water light blue and the deeper lake depths a darker blue. I tried using the TopoToRaster tool but it thinks the area between the lakes is part of the lakes and make dem data for the entire area. Can the TopoToRaster tool do only the lakes with the contour lines? How? Or, is there there a better tool for this?

Hey Rickey, thanks for your advice and suggestions. The map is working fine again. It stopped displaying the overylay for about two weeks and now it's showing the overlay and the rectangle again.

That's correct, the email contains the longitude, latitude extent for the area of the rectangle.

Check out the rectangle on this link: demo the user moves the rectangle around and changes the size to select an area of the map which the user wants a printed copy of.

The three lines of JavaScript below add a map overlay on top of Google Maps. It was working fine and suddenly stopped working. Does anybody have any ideas on how to get this to work? The reason I am combining Google Maps and ArcGIS is because I need the ArcGIS map but I also need a rectangle which the user can move around and re-size to select an area of the map. If there is a way to create this type of rectangle with ArcGIS then I don't need to use Google Maps. var url = 'http://www.giscoecache.lrc.gov.on.ca/ArcGIS/rest/services/LIO_Cartographic/LIO_Topographic/MapServer'; var agsType = new gmaps.ags.MapType(url,{name:'ArcGIS', opacity:9.5}); map.overlayMapTypes.insertAt(0, agsType); The ArcGIS map is at this link: LIO_Cartographic/LIO_Topographic (MapServer) My demo map is at this link (I had to comment out the three lines above to get the rectangle to show: demo_v6

I have a base layer that represents an area that has two layers above it, one layer is lakes, the other layer is wooded area. In the image below the layer with the lakes is blue, the layer representing wooded area is green, the pale green is the base which covers the entire area. The pale green represents lowlands, low elevation. The two images below show the wooded layer and the lakes layer without the pale green base layer. If I set the three layers as shown above the pale green lowlands show through, but, when I add the elevation layer (DEM) the lowlands do not show through. I can add transparency to the DEM but that washes out the colors in the lakes and wooded area. I would like to use the wooded and lakes layers to create some sort of masked area which represents only the lowlands. Then I will have some options to make the lowlands show through the DEM layer, I might be able to move the lowland layer above the DEM layer or make the color brighter, etc. Any ideas on how to create a layer representing only the pale green areas in the image above? I have used the Feature Outline Masking Tools to mask the contour labels but I don't know if that will work with polygons.
