Hi all, I am a novice ArcMap 10.4.1 user. I made a figure of the sites that I sampled in the waters around the Korean peninsula. The basemap is NASA's ocean color .nc image with units of chlorophyll mg-m3 and on which I also added some data as graduated symbols. I have now been asked to draw contour lines of the bathymetry - at least two or three lines to show the depths of the stations that I sampled. I have two problems 1)i dont know what kind of bathymetry data to download 2) once I do find the data I dont know how to make these contours in ArcMap. thanks a lot.

OK guy I figured it out after i posted this question. In the Layers menu i have to change Type to Minimum and Maximum and then give my Min and Max. for Values but all I did was change the labels. thanks Helga

Hi, I am having yet another problem with my interpolated plots. I want to keep one range of values for parameter A for 5 figures from 5 years so that I can compare them. This is because the range in values changes with year and I want to show this interannual difference. But if I change the High-Low values in Layer properties it defaults to the High and Low of the data in question. That is it stretches the bar for the data in question and does not pay heed to my input values of high and low. You can see that in the data attached where I created two ranges and the figure did not change at all. I wonder if there is some setting I am not changing. This is pretty trivial in other software but I have wasted so much time with ArcMap with nothing to show. the other thing is that I know this forum has retired but when i start my question and try to change the Publish Location I dont seem to see anything relevant like ArcMap etc. Thanks a lot. Helga

Hi Steve, I worked on this the entire weekend and that I was good because I learned a lot but I a stumbling block prevents me from completing this task. For creating the mask polygon i followed the video you posted Basic Digitization in ArcGIS - YouTube s well as this one Basic Digitization in ArcGIS - YouTube but both of these and others require the raster image which i going to be clipped to have georeference but my interpolated image seems to have lost it. What I did was :added a base map GSHHS_i_L1 and then my excel data got the sampling locations. Then DataManagement toolbox->Features and used CopyFeatures to krig. But if i right click the Layers and __> Coordinates - everything is greyed out. I thought that by adding the base map i had provided the georeference. Thanks a lot. Helga

I am really sorry Xander, Chris and Steve - i have been such a nuisance in the last few days with my very limited skills but after a lot of research I think I need to make a mask first or a polygon showing which area I want and which i want to mask. That will be my input in the Environmental Settings Dialogue that Steve showed. But how to do that i dont know. I could probably follow this video if I knew how to place the polygon which I dont know Clip raster by polygon in ArcGIS - YouTube Thanks a lot Helga

Hi Xander, Thanks a lot for your reply. Yes I remember having the same problem with another software package called Surfer. I am however not sure what you mean by "After the interpolation is finished you can mask the result to create a raster that only covers the area you want like in the ODV you have.". Sorry I am really a novice.

I am new to Spatial Analyst Tools --> Interpolation but attached are some of my attempts. When i choose Krigging as a method of interpolating i get a box which encompasses regions where I dont have any sampling points eg on the eastern side. If i chose nearest neighbor then i dont get this problem but i get these sharp angular edges which dont look nice. I would have preferred the more curved edges produced by another ocean research related software ODV in the third image. Is that possible? Thanks Helga

Hi Steve, I figured it out and am posting this to thank you as well as in case others have the same problem. I think something was off in my spreadsheet and its probably because it was originally made on Excel with Chinese characters. After many tries I copy pasted it on a new excel spreadsheet and it worked (after a few trials). But I did follow your Features-> Copy Features before I interpolated. Thanks a lot. Helga

Hi Steve, I followed your instructions and i finally double clicked Copy Features and when the Copy Feature Menu came up i provided the Input Layer but I didnt change the Output Layer. I kept it at default. but again I got an error only i cant seem to retrieve it. In my earlier attempt i also got another message which I am posting. Thanks a lot. Helga

Thanks a lot Steve! I first used Add Data to get a base map in this case GSHHS_i_L1. Then I use Add Data to add my data from the Excel Spreadsheet, the snapshot of which I have attached. Then I right Click the layer and select Display X and Y to get my sampling locations. BTW I have made sure that the header of my Excel spreadsheet did not have any spaces or special characters. Then I went to the Tool box and Selected Spatial Analyst Tool --> Interpolation --> Krigging. Then I invariably get the error I posted above. That's it. Any help would be much appreciated! Helga

Hi Steve, Thanks for your reply. I am a bit of a novice so I am not sure exactly what I am supposed to do. I have my layers in the Table of Contents. I did hunt around online and got the Advance Editing Toolbar but that's greyed out. So really I am not sure how to follow your instructions. Sorry for the bother. H

Thanks a lot Xander! This is really very useful for me as I used to do a similat thing in NASA's ocean color software and was lookibg for it in ArcMap too. A final question and my apologies for the bother. When i stretch/manipulate the color ramp and then display it alongside my map do I get the exact color ramp they way I stretched it or do I get the original on-stretched one? Thanks a lot. Helga
