Hi Jeff, We're always keen to hear feedback on technical and licensing matters to do with the runtime. If there is something we can do to improve matters then this is a good place to put your suggestions forward. It's probably worth me pointing you at the following link. http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/runtime/pricing If you are planning an application which is purely consuming services from ArcGIS Server or ArcGIS Online, then you will be using the "Basic" option. Does this help? Mark

Hi I might need to move your post so you can get a better answer as this forum is for native runtime apps. Looking at your error messages I think you might be using Web ADF for java but correct me if I've got that wrong. Let me know and we will get you some help. Thanks Mark

Hi For web based mapping applications we've got a few options which may be of interest to you. You should take a look at the ArcGIS Online capabilities for "cloud" based solutions http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline If you want to develop your own applications (which can consume either your own hosted services or ArcGIS Online services and webmaps), then you need to look at one of the web APIs we offer. We have APIs for FLEX, Java Script and WPF. There are some links below and forums for each of these products. General link : http://www.esri.com/getting-started/...rs/get-started - Flex : http://www.esri.com/getting-started/...t-started/flex - Java Script: http://www.esri.com/getting-started/...ted/javascript There are loads resources available on all of these products. Let me know if this helps. Good luck Mark

Hi Eric, I'm going to move your post to the ArcObjects forum as you'll get a better answer there. However as you are in the Runtime Java forum, can I tempt you to convert from ArcObjects to one of the runtime APIs? http://resources.arcgis.com/en/communities/runtime-java/index.html Good luck Mark

Hi You should be able to write some basic Java code to extract the contents of a .loc file without too much difficulty. The SDK has 2 geocode operations which may be of interest to you: - Geocode - which takes in an address string and returns a geographical point - Reverse Geocode - which takes a geographic point and returns an address string(s) for the address closest to that point Both these bits of functionality are available offline (local server) or by using online services. If you already have the SDK then there is a sample application which demonstrates how the above operations work. I think you should be able to write a slick batch geocoder if you consider the use the thread pools to speed up the operation. Geocoding or reverse geocoding large batches in a single thread (one after the other), might be a slow process. Does this help? Mark

Looked at this some more. I've found that there doesn't appear to be a limitation to the number of local services you can run (obviously I've not gone mad adding them as you'd just run out of memory). I think the problem here appears to be around using the same MPK file multiple times. I modified the sample code so that is used a dedicated MPK file for each instance of the local server and I was able to add around 12 shapefiles without issue. The other potiential option is to add multiple shape files to a single instance of a local server. Mark

It's also worth noting that there is a cost (sometimes quite significant) to reprojecting spatial data on the fly. It will always take longer to render data which is not in the same spatial reference. I do however think that it's acceptable to have a web Mercator basemap and project data in a wgs84 spatial reference. This is not a costly process. Mark

Tried this out today and it's looking like it might be a bug. We're looking at it... however we think we've got a workaround which we're testing out so all it not lost. Watch this space. Mark

We are generally encouraging developers to move away from Web ADF development as there are improved web API platforms out there which scale better and give you access to the latest ESRI developments. http://events.esri.com/uc/QandA/index.cfm?fuseaction=answer&conferenceId=2F6DC1A1-1422-2418-883C3868A9004888&questionId=3060 I'm not really the right person to advise on IDEs for Java development on web ADF, but this page should give some ideas: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/system-requirements/10.1/index.html#/ArcGIS_Web_ADF_Java_Platform/01510000006z000000/ If you need forum help on the subject, then you will get better answers going to the ArcObects forum. http://forums.arcgis.com/forums/20-ArcObjects-SDKs Mark

Hi, I'm assuming you are wanting to create a web application which consumes the services published by ArcGIS Server. You should be looking at one of the web APIs which we have for JavaScript, Flex or Silverlight even! There are some links below and forums for each of these products. General link : http://www.esri.com/getting-started/developers/get-started - Flex : http://www.esri.com/getting-started/developers/get-started/flex - Java Script: http://www.esri.com/getting-started/developers/get-started/javascript There are loads resources available on all of these products. Of course if you want to write native Java SE GIS applications then you're in the right place to get help on that subject. Good luck Mark

Hi Carlos, Have you looked at the toolkit section of the sample application where we have created a few different legend examples. If they do what you want (or even get close) the code for all these toolkit components is there for you do see - we've just used the raw API to create these. Mark

We've just been working on an API improvement for the next release which will do exactly what you want. It will work something like map.getLayers().reorderLayer(oldIndex, newIndex) For the moment ay 10.1.1 your best option is to remove the layer you want to reorder from the map control and then add it again at the place you want it; although it's not going to be as efficient as the new method above. Hope that helps Mark
