I tested the behavior using provide data. After defining the coordinate system tool worked as expected. Please define the correct projection of your data and run sun shadow volume tool. Steps: 1. Open ArcCatalog window / ArcCatalog 2. Navigate to multipatch feature class > Right click > properties > XY Cordinate sytem 3. Choose appropriate Projected Coordinate system > Click Ok 4. Use Sun Shadow Volume tool.

Is it happening with other tools as well e.g. clip tool (analysis)? Do you get the same error in ArcMap as well? Have you tried disabling your anti virus system? (once I was observed this behavior. Especially with McAfee.) 1. Try Renaming ESRI folder, located in your profile. C:\Users\User profile folder\AppData\Roaming\ESRI 2. Go to internet options > Security > Try setting security levels to Low for all the zones

Does the layer give error in new map session? You can try copy / past the small group of layers (or one by one ) in a new map document and check if the issue is reproducible each time. This will verify if there are other layers with the same problem. If you do not find this issue after coping all the layers in new map session that means there is a problem with the Map document. I can understand this could be a very time consuming trouble shooting if you have lot of layers in the map document.

1. Use Interpolate shape tool. This tool extracts the raster values and assign to line. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//00q90000006m000000 2. Now use Split line at vertices tool. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//00170000003z000000 3. Then Use the splited line as input in Feature to Point tool (point_location = Centroid) http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//00170000003m000000 4. Finally use Extract by points tool to extract the pixels below the line. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//009z0000002p000000

Take a back up of this shape file / feature class and then add it in a new map session. Run Check geometry and then try Repair geometry. Then add this layer to the original mxd and see if it gives the error.
