Chris, if you are the owner or an org administrator, you should be able to export the data from the feature service item page. By default, this is turned off for other users viewing the feature service item but can be enabled by the owner. We did find a small bug in our first beta release that does prevent you from opening the crowdsource layer in ArcMap or the ArcGIS Online map viewer. We have an update rolling out in the next week that should resolve this. Once the update rolls out, open the crowdsource story in the edit mode. When the app loads it will automatically update your story to the newer version as well as patch the bug in your feature service. Until then, you can still edit the Feature service with the REST API directly or with the JavaScript API. If you are planning to add lots of points I would recommend looking at some of the points you have added already through the builder so you can follow the same data model. The Crowdsource app requires a pretty specific data model and has extra validation built into the app to make sure your feature are valid. Also, the only attachments that the app reads are ones name "PrimaryPhoto.jpeg" and "PrimaryThumbnail.jpeg." All others will be ignored. The crowdsource app also optimizes these photos for the web so they load quickly. If you are adding point manually, I recommend resizing them before you upload. If some of the data is incorrect, there is a possibility the app will fail to load.

There has been a recent security update to Chrome (which most Android phones use as their default browser) and potentially some other modern browsers that restrict the use of the locate button when loading the app over an insecure (http) connection. In order to user the locate button, you will need to make sure your app is loaded using an https url so there is a secure connection. Currently, it looks like your server does not have a valid certificate to support this. In a upcoming release, we are planning to hide the locate button when it is not available.

Adding geotagged photos to a crowdsource story will still follow the same contribution and approval process as before. When in the viewer opens the contribution form and chooses a photo to upload that is geotagged, one of the following will happen: If there is no location already filled in, the geotagged location will be reversed geocoded to find an address. If an address is found, the location field will be automatically be updated with this address. Otherwise, the location picker will be updated with the Lat/Long coordinate. If the contributor has already added a location, the app will first ask if they want to use the location from the photo before updating the location. In both cases the, the contributor can choose to edit that location by dragging the pin on the map or by entering a new address/coordinates. After the point has been submitted, the author of the story can approve or reject as needed.

The new image loader that is coming in the next release should speed up the load time. In my most recent test, it seemed about 30-50% faster on my phone. Beyond just loading the photo in the browser, we are also resizing and resampling all the photos before we upload them to make sure they upload quickly when you click save even on slower internet connections. This also insures that viewer of the app will also experience faster loading. We will try to also optimize this in future releases.

Thanks for your feedback. We have noticed others having issues with the photo cropping and are planning to remove that in the next release. For the photo upload, do you mean the time between you choose the photo to the time it appears in the form or do you mean when you click the save to submit a new contribution?

Don, to protect the privacy of contributors who log in to participate in the crowdsource app, we require the app to be loaded over a secure https connection. If an app is loaded over https, most modern browsers restrict insecure (http) connections from being used within the map. In order to use this layer in the app, you will need to make sure your server has an SSL Certificate and then add the layer to the map using an https URL. We expect the next Beta to come out in mid-September.

In the first release of the Beta, we are only fully supporting the layers that are created inside the builder. While some others may work, they have not been tested. Can you share the layers in question that you are working with?

Thanks for your feedback on the Story Map Crowdsource Beta. We have also noticed that the photo uploader is difficult to use for some users and are planning a simpler version in next release.

Just make sure the beginning of your url starts with http not https. In most browsers, you will see a lock in the URL bar if you have loaded it with https. And some, including Chrome, the http will disappear from the from of the URL after you first load it.

Are you talking about the last 3 tabs? My assumption is because you have loaded the Story Map using a https (secure connection) in your browser. For security reasons, browsers do not allow http (insecure connections) to be loaded in a https loaded app. If you want to make sure the websites load, you will need to make sure you always load and share your app with an http URL. Normally, you can fix this by making sure you embed websites using their https URL, however NWS does not have a valid certificate on their server to handle https connections.

Thanks again for this feedback on the Beta version of our Crowdsource app. Here's a response to specific questions: on my iPhone 5 it isn't possible to take a photo with the camera - the screen is black I just tested on an iPhone 5 this morning and was able to successfully take a picture and upload it. Can you check to make sure you have given safari access to you your iPhones camera. Open the settings app > click "Privacy" > click "Camera" > Is "Safari" listed and enabled? Unfortunately, if you have restricted access to your camera if you are in Private browsing, the Safari browser will still provide the options to "Take a photo" when you click "Upload Photo" button in the form but will not actually allow you to take a picture. The camera will just remain black with a cancel button. This is an underlying issue of the iOS operating system that our app cannot bypass. because the space on mobile screens is very rare, I suggest to remove the social icons because nobody needs in this case Thanks, we'll look into removing the header when users are in the contribution form to provide more space. and then, there would be more space for the input fields (like description, etc.) We're looking into more way to make the form usable on mobile devices. if I load a saved photo and would like to scroll down to the input fields, automatically an area in the photo will be selected to cut it (I'm not sure if this feature is helpful here, because you anyway could cut & rotate with the camerafunction) Yes, other users have run into this issue and we will be incorporating a different photo uploader in the next release that should solve this issue.

Thanks you for your feedback on our beta release of the Story Map Crowdsource. As we continue to update the app for a final version, we are looking to make sure this app runs well on as many devices as possible. Here's a response to your specific questions. at the initial start of the crowdsource map the navigation menu at the bottom are not visible (iPhone 5) We have seen that this is a problem on iPhones but unfortunately did not have time to fully resolve it in the first beta release. Unlike others browsers, Apple does not provide a reliable way to get the size of initial view. there is no button for "full extent" We initially removed this to save some of the screen space of mobile devices. Based on feedback, we'll look into adding this back in. scrolling is difficult for the users, because there is only the small area at the top (with the social media icons) to scroll the page (otherwise you move only the map extent) Thanks for your feedback, we'll see if there is a better way to handle this. the social media buttons take much precious space - is there any idea for an alternate solution? We believe that sharing is a very important part of the crowdsource app to bring more contributors to the story and we want to keep it in a prominent spot. That main header bar also normally includes a logo which many organizations want to keep visible to provide a sense of identity. We'll see if there is a good solution to reducing the size for small mobile devices while still making sure both branding and sharing remain prominent in the app.
