Unfortunately, that ArcGIS Idea was first posted 4 and a half years ago. I voted it up but the VAST majority of Ideas never get implemented, IMHO. ESRI is too busy adding functionality and too often breaking things that work in the process. Don't get me wrong, I've been working with ESRI software 28 years and have no desire to switch! I just wish there would make more minor enhancements for usability vs new functionality.

I hope the "Register with Geodatabase" tool fixes most of the problem ESRI created. I just encountered one with ObjectID that is going to require that I come up with a work around to keep many of my current scripts running! In some databases we only have access to the spatial views and not the original data. I need to create copies of these geodatasets in other geodatabases both SDE (aka Enterprise) geodatabase and a file geodatabases. However, when copying a spatial view from one SDE database to another the spatial view created a physical feature class or just find. But with database views at 10.4.1, the ObjectID in the view is not recognized so an additional ObjectID_1 field is created! The schemas no long match and that breaks my workflow further downstream...

In Microsoft SQL Server you can list your domains via SQL Server with this query --SQL Server SELECT items.Name AS "Domain Name", items.Definition.value('(/*/Owner)[1]','nvarchar(max)') AS "Owner" FROM dbo.GDB_ITEMS AS items INNER JOIN dbo.GDB_ITEMTYPES AS itemtypes ON items.Type = itemtypes.UUID WHERE itemtypes.Name IN ('Coded Value Domain', 'Range Domain') You can then construct a SQL delete statement to delete the single domain entry but make sure it's not in use. This was the only solution I could get from ESRI Tech support last year when I too had this issue. You need to be able to run the SQL code in Management Studio if you have the rights and be sure to back up your database! I've put in an enhancement request a couple of years ago for changing the OWNER of a DOMAIN but I don't believe anything will come of it.

I agree 100% with this request but it's already 4 years since the request was added and still no enhancement. Anyway, there is a kluge workaround that I don't have enough still to program. ArcMap and ArcCatalog can be started up in any of the licensing levels by using batch files where a variable named ESRI_SOFTWARE_CLASS is set to Professional or Viewer. But when using the method a user has to navigate to MXDs only after starting up the ArcMap / ArcCatalog. Does anyone know how to add options to the right button click action in Windows Explorer to show two options for files with a .mxd extension, one for the Advanced and another for Basic? I think that would be useful workaround since ESRI can't or won't do the requested enhancement. Thanks

This issue is killing us when the data is being edited and snapping is on even though the user is zoomed way in! Our users are asking if they can move their data editing from SQL Server to a File Geodatabase but that may be the only option since ESRI tech support couldn't help us with the randomly changing feature extents.

Does anyone know if the 10.4.1 ArcGIS Desktop will work with SDE (I know it's not called that anymore) 10.5? We are rolling out Desktop 10.4.1 but we are hating the way views are done in 10.4.1 SDE. If possible I'd like to skip upgrading SDE and leave it at version 10.2.2 then go straight to 10.5 when it comes out. I realize that the Desktop rarely is able to work with a newer version of SDE but the loss of SDE views two steps backwards imo.

It's a year and a half since you mentioned the enhancement request and it's still not possible to add metadata to the sql database views that replaced sde views. Is there any update on this? Is it even being worked on? Thanks

Why not create a database view in the geodatabase joining data from the geometry field(and any other attributes from the feature class) to attributes from a table in the non-spatial database? We do this all the time. It does require guest permissions on the data in the non-spatial database. Having said that, we also have scripts scheduled weekly to create standalone feature classes from non-spatial databases. It all depends on the use and the needs of the GIS users.

How are you deleting the records. I'm confused. You can't delete records in a feature class or table via ArcCatalog. You have to bring it into an ArcMap edit session unless you're doing it through a geoprocessing tool.

We are running ArcGIS 10.2.2 intending to upgrade to 10.4.1 in a couple of months. Since SDEBinary will be going away at some point, and we won't be able to create SDE Views at 10.4.1, I want to start migrating from SDEBinary to SQL Geometry for our feature classes. Will Map Services need to be republished if the feature classes they point to are migrated from SDEBinary to SQL Geometry? We have about 100 map services with the same layers symbolized at various scales so I'm hoping we don't have to do anything other than stop the service, migrate the storage and restart the service. Does anyone know? If I don't hear back I'll do so testing.

There was suppose to be a technical workshop at this year's UC titled, "Best Practices Converting Workflows from SDE Command Line UI." It disappeared off my ESRI UC agenda app just days before the user conference which really sucked timing wise. This was first ESRI tech workshop I scheduled when the UC schedule was first announced. I can't think of a more important topic for us enterprise geodatabase administrators! Is there any chance that the materials for that canceled workshop could be posted somewhere on the ESRI site? I can't find the presenter's name but maybe someone reading this can provide that.

How many ArcGIS Desktop users / readers can a file geodatabase realistically support? Here's the reason why I'm asking this question. Years ago we created a single SDE/SQL geodatabase as a container for corporate GIS layers at our agency. These "library", as we call it contains over 250 feature classes and tables. At any one time during the work week, we have 60 users and everything is read only. As you can imagine it's getting harder and harder for users to find the layers they are looking for with this many gis layers. I've now been asked to load several new layers that are designed for cartographic purposes. I'd rather not mix these layer into our current library so I'm thinking that maybe we should just add a file geodatabase on the file system where everyone can get at it. I hate the idea of creating feature datasets in SDE. Other options? We are running ArcGIS 10.2.2 on SQL Server 2012.
