Is there a time frame on a fix for this? Now for the bad news. This bug is fixed at 10.2 http://support.esri.com/en/bugs/nimbus/TklNMDgzMTk1 Over on the Desktop forum an ESRI employee wrote that SP2 for 10.1 turned into version 10.2. So don't look for any fixes to 10.1. I hope I'm wrong!

Solved, sort of. Thanks for all the suggestions Michael and Curtis. As you suspected it had to do with the 64-bit background geoprocessing. I was able to successfully run the script after uninstalling the 64-bit background processing and running a "repair" of ArcGIS to reestablish the 32-bit python file relationships. As you stated OLEDB connections are not supported in 64-bit processing. That raises another question. Could I have kept the 64-bit background geoprocessing and specified python to run in 32-bit mode? Does anyone have a simple example of how specify that a script runs in 32-bit?? Or do you just change the Windows file associations?? My script will be running as a scheduled task that launches a .py file. Thanks again for the all the help! If OLEDB connections are not support with 64-bit processing what happens when ESRI puts out a 64-bit only version of ArcGIS desktop?

It turns out an ordinary user connection work just fine. Very responsive. But an admin connection to the same server from the same PC is so slow it's basically unusable. Thank goodness for the web based ArcGIS Server Manager!

Is the config-store for your server a Local or UNC path? It's local. I tested from another PC running Desktop 10.0 and found no performance problem when listing services.

After upgrading one of our two test ArcGIS Server to 10.1 just listing map services has become extremely slow. At 10.0 it took less than 1 second to display all 8 services in a folder using ArcCatalog. Listing the same 8 services on the 10.1 server takes 54 seconds. That's a factor of 54 times longer. In ArcCatalog it takes 27 seconds for it to list just the first of the 8 services and a total of 54 from beginning to end. The two ArcGIS Server servers are VMs with identical configurations except one is ArcGIS Server 10.0 and the other 10.1. The 10.1 VM was even bumped up to 6 GB from the original 4 GB of memory without any improvement. I'm use to each new version of ESRI software to run slower on the same hardware but this is painful. Has anyone else encountered this problem? BTW, I tried using a different PC with 10.1 desktop and it took only 49 seconds compared to 54 seconds. A little faster but still practically unusable. (Update: I've tried the same thing from two more PCs and each lists all the map services in under a second. One is running ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 the other 10.1. All 10.1 desktops have SP1 installed so I don't know why some work fine while the others don't.)

Are you running the scheduled task as yourself or a different user? If a different user does that user have access to an ArcGIS Desktop license?

You won't have to do any additional steps to convert you MDB to a PGD. For example, if I create a MDB in Access I can immediately begin to use this with ArcGIS. I can import/export feature classes, create tables, etc. with the database. I tried that but I get the following error each time ERROR 000210: Cannot create output L:\tmp\NRCS\soildata\clallam_incl_FS\soildb_WA_2003.mdb\soilmu_a_wa632 Failed to execute (FeatureClassToFeatureClass).

Hi Randy, Personal Geodatabases are Microsoft Access databases that can store, query, and manage both spatial and nonspatial data. See here. You should have no problem accessing a Microsoft Access MDB using ArcGIS 10.0. Hi Jake, I wasn't quite clear in my post. I know that personal geodatabases are Access databases. What I'm trying to do is convert an non-pgdb into a pgdb but I don't see any option to do that.

James, can Add-Ins be triggered automatically when ArcMap is closed? If not it doesn't do what basth needs to do. I too had a VBA script to close all shared extensions saved in the Normal.mxt that was trigged by the closing of ArcMap. But that was back in the 9.x days.

I'm creating a tool to edit metadata. The tool will export a feature class's metadata as an XML file, make modification to the file then import it back in. Where is a safe place for tools to create temporary text and XML files?

I've installed the CSW Client I downloaded off sourceforge.net. The install went ok but I'm not seeing any "Geoportal" group under the Customize, Customize mood, Commands tab. I even tried typing CSW in the "Show commands containing" in both ArcCatalog and ArcMap but it's not showing up. Any ideas? BTW, I'm running ArcGIS 10.1 on a Windows 2008 R2 server.

How do you create easy to read labels in ArcMap? Attached a screen capture from a King County website which I think is using ESRI products. The labels are easy to read on top of aerial photos, etc. I've tried using halos but there not as clean as the fonts on King County's web site. I don't see symbols like these in ArcMap's Symbol Selector. Am I missing something? Thanks
