Honestly, I am not sure if that is the case. They were already using SDE Workgroup geodatabases, so basically they are not creating new geodatabase using 'Create Enterprise GDB' tool. I expand the Database Servers icon. Under my arcserver_sqlexpress.gds I right click and select "New Geodatabase" They are connecting using 'Database Server' option in ArcCatalog and creating new geodatabase. Not creating connections under 'Database Connections'. The Default database size, of roughly 700 MB shrinks to something around 4 MB for a new Enterprise geodatabase, if you perform a Shrink operation on the database in SQL Server. Did you try running the SQL provided by George above to find the actual size of the Tables in the database?

How are you checking the size of the Feature Class? Are you just looking at the total size of the SQL Server database? Did you consider the log file size as well?

Expected documented behavior: Modifying field properties—ArcGIS Help | ArcGIS Desktop Length If your table or feature class does not contain data, you can increase or decrease this value. If your table or feature class contains data, you can only increase the field length. Also, you can alter the field length, even when the data is Versioned. You don't need to Unregister as Versioned, to alter the field length. FAQ: What schema changes can be made to versioned data?

Error: Schema is out of date, retry as owner or sdeadmin Do you normally modify the schema from the DBMS end? Maybe you can check and compare the schema from DBMS side and ArcCatalog 10.3.1 side, to check if there were schema changes. Though, you mentioned that ArcGIS 10.3.1 can work with these tables just fine. Still worth a check. We normally use a Testing instance, to check everything is in order before such migration\upgrades. You could probably do the same. Maybe, just backup one or two of those problematic tables and experiment with that only.

Similar issue - Cannot edit SDE in ArcMap 10.6.1 ? Is this happening with only 1 editor? Is this happening with only a particular database? Have you tried re-granting all the permissions and checked if that helped? If the user is just an Editor, and doesn't own any data-- have you tried dropping that user from the database and re-creating the user? Does that help?

Yes, I just checked again and recalled that I had got -- Something went wrong with this database connection. Check to see if the connection properties need to be updated. So that was a different message. So the error in your case is definitely odd then.
