California Education and the Environment Initiative lessons are available to teachers in California. They are the result of a law which mandates environmental education within a framework of 5 Environmental Principles. Having taught using the EEI Unit, "Biodiversity: They Keystone to Life on Earth", I knew that a map would greatly help students to visualize the content and help them to see patterns and relationships. Because there aren't enough instructional days (because of other required activities) to complete the NGSS Integrated curriculum, I saw how ArcGIS Online mapping tools would be quite handy to use to enrich the learning experience. A colleague and I volunteered to re-work NGSS Instructional Unit 4, which focuses on some aspect of the environment, by using EEI lessons. At the time, I offered to include ArcGIS Online mapping tools in the modified Instructional Segment. In other words, I have made one map to share with the teachers in spring 2019. I will also have the opportunity to teach the middle school science teachers in our district the fundamentals of mapmaking using ArcGIS Online. I plan to use "Undercover Mapper", "Geographic Features of California" and a carefully selected Geoinquiry. Here is a link to my map and ask for your feedback. I have time to improve it...such as adding pictures, etc., etc. Geographic Features of California I thank you for your comments and help when I have asked for your feedback in the past. I look forward to what insight you can give me with this work. Many thanks, Della

Hello, Rupert. Thank you! I will take your advice. School is not in session, so I have some time in between professional development sessions...only 2 weeks this summer. I wish you well.

Two of my students created a map of our campus to help incoming 6th-graders more easily learn about the campus and what classes are taught in which classrooms, and what teachers teach in specific classrooms. We were too late to submit the map to our regional Story Map competition. Is there another entity that would offer suggestions to improve the map? If there is such a group or person, I will share the students' map. Thank you.

Tom, By direct instruction, you mean that the teacher is using a Geoinquiry to teach a lesson. You don't mean that students are working through a geoinquiry alone or with a partner. Am I correct? Thank you, Della

Background: I was sharing with one of our district technology coaches ArcGIS Online. She sat beside me and followed along, as I showed her how to make a map of our district middle schools. I had asked her if she would partner with me in presenting ArcGIS Online at CSTA. She said that she would. After working with the map and introducing layers from the Living Atlas, she said, "Let's put this on at our Blended Learning Summit". Wow. I was surprised and pleased! Question: Those of you who are experienced in doing this, what are some tips you can give me? Note: I have lots of notes from our T3G2017 Online Institute, but I am scared to do this. I asked my colleague how many teachers to expect on the two days, so I can reserve spots for the teachers. We plan to show them how to make a map and introduce them to Geoinquiries, as a start. Thank you, in advance!

My 6th-graders were working on "Using the Living Atlas of the World: Dynamic Maps and GIS Services", Exercise 2. The map's symbology was missing. Everything was gray. We refreshed the page, which didn't help. 8 of my students had this difficulty. Any thoughts on this? Thank you.

I was blocked from "Creating an Idea" and posting it to either T3G Alums or ArcGIS Online. I was able to post to T3G 2017. I know that site will dissolve soon. This space was recommended. So here I am with an idea. IDEA: Co-Presenting at a CSTA Conference I renewed my NSTA/CSTA membership today. The idea emerged of presenting the power of learning and teaching with ArcGIS Online. I would like to partner with someone on this. Any thoughts on this?

Amy, When your students work on their map (individual accounts) are they in a group in your organization? Are you envisioning something like google slides where each student can contribute to the same StoryMap by adding layers about their region of the world? I need clarification.

I am also content-driven, but I want to learn the technology. I learn slower than the average, but I learn.
