I put a layer package with 3 examples at http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=81b39307fde04dd99656f3e19e4e0715 Basically for an attribute you can use file:///C:/Users/folder/Documents/whatever.pdf Using the HTML popup you can do a lot of things to get the look that you want, and ArcGIS Explorer desktop will display it.

A few people have noted that when using ArcGIS Explorer Desktop on a touch display or surface, pinching to zoom does not zoom in or out very far or very quickly. This is related to the ArGIS Explorer Options - Navigation Speed. At its fastest setting, the pinch navigation still does not perform that well. There is a work-around for this. This setting, like many of the ArcGIS Explorer options is stored in the 'settings1500.xml' file. This file is located in your user profile. In the Windows file browser type %appdata%\Roaming\esri\arcgis explorer Open the settings1500.xml file in a text editor, and look for: MouseNavigationSpeed="0.019" Increase the value of this number. In testing I tried 0.119. and found that it worked well for my touch screen. Update the file, save it and then start ArcGIS Explorer. I also noticed that the Mouse scroll wheel was not usable, way to fast with the updated speed. However, If I held the control-key down while scrolling the mouse wheel (fine zoom) it worked well. You can also hold the shift key down and drag a box with the left mouse button to zoom, if you are going between touch and mouse in your usage. Keep in mind that if you make a change to an ArcGIS Explorer option in ArcGIS Explorer and click OK on the ArcGIS Explorer options dialog, it will overwrite the MouseNavigationSpeed setting in the XML file, and you will have to update the file again to get pinch zoom working as desired. At 2500 some modifications to how things are handled in User Appdata profile introduced an error. You can work around this by doing the following. In your Windows File browser if you type in. %appdata%\Local\ESRI\ArcGIS Explorer You will see a Connections.xml file in this folder. If you copy this file to %appdata%\Roaming\ESRI\arcgis explorer The Application Configuration Manager will be able to find the Explorer Connections xml file, and you will be able to add them to your application configuration. Mary, Which operation system are you using? XP, WIn7, Win 8.1 ? I took a look at this on Windows 8 and did not notice any issues. It sounds like the http traffic to the services that supply the basemap are being disrupted. It may be something to do with IE10 or perhaps another upgrade to you network? If you use a web debugging tool like Fiddler Download Fiddler Web Debugging Tool for Free by Telerik you may be able to see if the service requests are being blocked. On Windows 7, IE10 and ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500 there is a known issue with ArcGISConnectionBin.exe related to Internet Explorer LAN Settings. ArcGIS Explorer 1500 would not have this exact problem as ArcGISConnectionBin.exe is new for 2500. However, it may be worth while to take a look at your LAN settings. In 2D view ArcGIS Explorer will make the following requests http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services/World_Imagery/MapServer?mapname=Layers&layer=_alllayers&level=16&row=23814&column=16154&format=JPEG Is this URL accessible on your network? If possible you may want to try using the computer on a different network.. It may help in determining whether it is the network (IT department, Proxy Settings) or something specific to the computer. A new version ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2505 is available, that resolves this issue. http://gisupdates.esri.com/ArcGISExplorer/Build2505/ArcGISExplorerDownload.exe In addition to installing on Windows 8.1 there is a fix to correct the Zoom extent for custom geocode service results as well as a fix in 3D that allows measure result graphics and note to pin more precisely to the 3D surface. At this time the Product download pages have not been updated, but they will be soon. -Mark

What are the details for the geocoding bug Esri is fixing with 2500? I have a locator which returns results, places push-pins correctly, but all results zoom to the ocean; when zooming to a result, the map goes to the wrong place. Any suggestions? Is this a problem with 2500? Apparently, the ArcGIS Online location service works fine, but our custom locator services does not. Actually, it is an Esri location service from the Esri Data Appliance. Thanks! A release with a fix for geocode results zooming to the wrong location is available. It is a full setup ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2505. http://gisupdates.esri.com/ArcGISExplorer/Build2505/ArcGISExplorerDownload.exe In addition to the geocode fix: The setup will install on Windows 8.1 and measure results and note graphics will pin more precisely to the surface in 3D. The download pages will reflect this information soon, but you heard it here first. -Mark

Ellen, You can connect to more than one portal, but you can only be connected to one at a time. When switching between portals, use the Manage Portals link on the sign in dialog. You need to be signed out, to manage the portal connections. -Mark

Hi, Today we got heavy problems with drawing - caching. We have an file geodatabase, one polygon layer in it. It´s color is purple. We make an query and get an new polygon layer. Because we created this layer, we can change the colour of this layer. So i change it to orange. BUT! The new colour is shown only in some map scales. When I zoom in or out - the color changes. Sometimes i get polygons which are half orange, half purple - see attachment. You will see the same polygon in several map scales. Deleting the cache doesn´t help. Nor does the auto-refresh in source data options of the layer. And there are better things - we took a newer version of the geodatabase and made the query again - it happens, that not only the colors are wrong, but also the shapes themselves - they are shown from the old database, even if it was deleted and replaced by a newer one. Any solutions? Thank you Michael Glöckner If the layer name in the table of contents is really long it will cause display issues. The name will be the query in your case, so it is possible that this could be the problem. Once the drawing error occurs, it will continue to occur in the current Explorer session. To work around this, rename the layer to a shorter name (less than 100 characters should work). Save the layer or save the map, Exit / shutdown explorer and add the layer with shorter layer name or open the map with shorter layer name and the polygon symbol should display correctly. -mark

System Requirements test say pass but still get unsupported OS while installing. Windows 8.1 64-bit Is this a known issue, any known workaround? Yes you can workaround the problem by using the .msi to install, see this thread. http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/88885-Installing-ArcGIS-Explorer-2500-on-Windows-8.1-preview

The result of a spatial query is an Explorer note. An Explorer note only has a "popup window" to store the information. When you choose create layer package, the "note" is converted to a package, and all of the attribute information is 'stuffed' into one column. There isn't an out of the box solution to give you exactly what you want using a spatial query. -mark

There is a bug in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500. The add services dialog does not show services from the server that have security applied. Previous versions of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop (1750) do work correctly with secure services. Maps (NMF) files and layers (NMC) created with 1750 that reference secure services will display correctly in ArcGIS Explorer 2500. -mark

ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500 is still supported and new updates will be available soon. http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/85567-ArcGIS-Connection-has-stopped-working?p=372294#post372294 As I mentioned in this thread, can you test explorer off of your network, and do you still experience the problems, or do the problems only occur when connected to your network? If the problem only occurs when connected to your network, can you identify anything that may have change on your network around 3/8/14? As far as the confusion in regards to support. Other products from Esri with "Explorer" in the name are: Arc Explorer - The last release was 9.3.1 - it is no longer supported. ArcGIS Explorer Online - Retired December 10, 2013.
