You can use an attribute like this: <a href="http://www.esri.com" target="_blank">http://www.esri.com</a> Attached is a layer package that shows the various attribute and how they behave. Joe, To start, I have some clarifications / hopefully satisfactory answers to your questions: Question 1: What was that AGX-like Windows 7 desktop application (ArcGIS Viewer?) that I saw in “beta” at last year’s UC? What you saw was a forward looking vision of "Explorer for ArcGIS" on the Windows 8.x/10 operating system. A desktop application that allows you to view and author ArcGIS online maps. It uses the same map that you would use with ArcGIS online to view and author maps in the web-browser. Is that a modern AGX replacement that dovetails better with Windows 8/10, ArcGIS 10.3.x and ArcGIS Online? I would not characterize it as a replacement for ArcGIS Explorer Desktop (AGX). It is an alternative to ArcGIS Explorer desktop that may be a replacement for some users. It is specifically designed with ArcGIS online in mind, so yes it will work great with the ArcGIS online system. And yes, it is also designed with Windows 8/10 in mind. Is it the new build of AGX that you speak of? I spoke in terms of the next ArcGIS Explorer Desktop release, (March/April) which is a continuation of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500/2505 software architecture / technology. It is not the Explorer for ArcGIS software that you saw running on Windows at the User Conference. Is it real? Explorer for ArcGIS is real. http://www.esri.com/software/explorer-for-arcgis And the vision for the future is real… However the windows version of the software is not there yet. Question 2: What do you mean when you say regarding the next build of AGX “…it will still lag behind ArcGIS online, particularly webmap support.”? ArcGIS Explorer Desktop uses its own 'Map format' it is not the same as an ArcGIS online map (web-map). When a web-map is opened in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop it is converted to an Explorer Desktop map (NMF). As you noted the online system is continually being updated, every few weeks in some cases. ArcGIS Explorer Desktop is quickly out of date in regards to changes in the "online web map". For example, ArcGIS online makes heavy use of Feature Services and they are often used in online maps. As you are likely aware, Feature Services are not supported in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop, hence feature service layers in a web-map do not display in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. Having poured my life into ArcGIS Explorer Desktop, since its inception, (and Esri software since my inception ) I appreciate what you are saying in regards to Explorer's usefulness. It is gratifying to hear about its use and see it being used by your organization and many others. ArcGIS Explorer Desktop will continue to be maintained to meet your current workflows (be install-able on Windows 10). However, as your workflows advance, as underlying technology advances, I must ask you to look at apps like Explorer for ArcGIS, Collector, Operations Dashboard, ArcGIS Pro etc… to meet your needs… and this does pain me, as it seems from what you are telling me, our latest efforts are not satisfying the desires of your organizations or your users. At Esri we take pride in listening to our users and Developing GIS technology that is truly driven by our users… it is in our DNA. I will do my part to make sure that what you have written here is considered in our current and future work and the work of my colleagues. Please do continue to ask for what you want, ask me, ask any Esri staffer, we thrive on meeting the needs and desires of our users. Thank you, Mark

Joe, We are working on the next version of ArcGIS Explorer Desktop, same technology under-pinning as ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2505. It will be released in the ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 time frame. (March/April 2015) It is a continuation of the ArcGIS Explorer Desktop that you know. To your correct observation about falling behind, the next release will catch up ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 data sources, it will still lag behind ArcGIS online, particularly webmap support. Joe Flannery wrote: "In the mean-time, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS for Desktop and Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Runtime SDKs, iOS and Android Apps, Community Maps, Open Data, etc., continue to be updated and upgraded, regularly and frequently." Could these applications be used to replace ArcGIS Explorer Desktop? If not, why? Thanks, Mark

Yes, the description should be present in the resulting attribute table, in a field called popupinfo. I would look do see if there are any "characters" {%& etc... in the description that might be causing an issue. I don't know of any.. (I am not an expert with the tool) but that is what I would look for first. What fields do you get in the resulting data, and what version of ArcGIS are you using? Mark

Christopher, It is possible to build custom applications using ArcReader. To do so you need ArcGIS Desktop and the Publisher Extension... as well as Visual Studio. Here is a link to the basic starting point. ArcGIS Publisher | Customizing ArcReader Here is some more information specific to the PublisherControls that you can build custom ArcReader applications with. Publisher Library Overview Mark

Chris, You are experiencing two problems. One is with the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe You have successfully worked around the issues by un-checking "Automatically detect settings" as Erin Brimhall correctly suggests. In some cases this does not work. If this is the case for anyone else reading this, you can rename the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe (located in Explorer (x86)\bin) to disable it. ArcGIS Explorer Desktop will continue to work without the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe in play. For the Second problem, ArcGIS Explorer Desktop no longer showing Base Maps, Layers in the galleries or a default map when clicking new map. this was due to an update to ArcGIS online, that changed how content is presented to users based on region. When not signed in IP Address is used to determine region. To work around this there are a couple things that you can do. One is to create your own base maps, as you have done. All ArcGIS Explorer Desktop maps, default map and basemaps are available online and can be found here http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=owner:esri_arcgisexplorer Another workaround is to Create an ArcGIS online account or use one that you have. https://www.arcgis.com/home/signin.html A public account will work fine for this workaround. Sign in and then edit your your user profile (or set it when you create your account). Set your Region to World Then when using ArcGIS Explorer, Sign in using your ArcGIS online account. When you are signed in and your User Profile Region is set to "World" ArcGIS Explorer Desktop will show the base maps. Other non-USA regions may also show base maps, which would explain variations in how Explorer users experience this "missing base maps" issue. Both of these issue will be addressed for the next ArcGIS Explorer Desktop update... Mark

Tijm, It looks like the temporary content is not being cleared when modifying the HTML Popup XSL template. I add a Point a layer, the default popup looks like this. I decided to modify it so that the photo would show the picture, instead of the URL hyperlink. In layer properties - html popup I modified the section of the XSL, for when a field value startes with "https:" Changing it to show an image instead... I clicked OK Clicked on my feature to see the popup. whoops ... forgot to close the "img" Back in Layer Properties make the correction. OK.. and Click the feature again. hmm... same error.. what ?? The property seems to be stuck with my first XSL modification attempt. I found that if I copy the layer in the TOC, and Paste it back in, If I click on the Feature from the pasted layer, I see the modification. Craig Williams Copy and paste seems to be a decent workaround for this issue. The layer package for content used in this explanation is located at http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=5cb6af18edfb415499707d368c7388fc Mark

You might find the Collector app useful for this.. It uses the smartphone camera, but pretty straight forward to create data points based on GPS location. Video showing how to setup a hosted feature service for use in Collector and Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS. Using geotagged photos from a camera, it wouldn't be exactly real time, but you can create a feature class out of them using GeoTagged Photos to Points - geoproccessing tool found in ArcCatalog.
