That is, I believe, only possible, if the geometry is stored in the database's native spatial format (e.g. SQL Server's Geometry/Geography, or Oracle's SDO etc.). In that case, you need to send a sql query that conforms to the underlying database's syntax (not quite sure whether all databases follow the same syntax or different). The workaround that would work regardless of underlying database is to pass in a search geometry to find all points that intersects or is contained within the search geometry.

At 10.1, 'dynamicLayers enabled mapservice' supports defining label for a layer within a mapservice per request basis.

what I meant was if you have a layer and bunch of tables in a mapservice, you can join any of those tables to the layer on-the-fly and draw features based on attribute value from the joined table. Also, please note that a layer or table can be directly accessed from a workspace (don't need to add them in the map at the authoring time) as long as the workspace is 'registered' to the mapservice. The sample that you've provided shows an example on how you can take advantage of ArcGIS server side functionality to generate class breaks renderer without writing much code on the client side.

Just make both origin and destination layer/table exist in the mxd. If one of them is missing, that relationship will not be advertised by a mapservice.

Yes. Depending on number of features and the complexity of features, you may see noticeable difference in the performance. In your case, every export request will project features on-the-fly which is expensive operation. If you can, we recommend to project your FeatureClass to the destination SRS (i.e. 100210) and publish that as a mapservice.

once a mapservice is cached, you can't toggle the visibility of a layer. An export call to a cached mapservice uses the pre-cooked cached tiles to create an image instead of a full redraw. if you happen to have access to 10.1 beta2, it should be able to achieve this by enabling dynamicLayers. Not all Web APIs are caught up with this option right now, but should be by the time 10.1 Final is released. FYI: ArcMap as a client will not support that at 10.1.

By default, it looks in <install_dir>\Templates\ExportWebMapTemplates (e.g. C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\Templates\ExportWebMapTemplates on the Server install) for all available templates. Each template is nothing but mxd file with layout elements. http://resourcesbetadev.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/Export_Web_Map/00540000001m000000/ If you want to use your own templates, you need to republish that gp service and choose a folder as the Layout Template Folder. Please check this help topic out http://resourcesbetadev.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/Using_your_own_layouts_for_printing/01540000057v000000/ In REST end point, you need to pass in the name of the template (as string) in the request. You will find all available templates listed in your ExportWebMap's resource page (here is an example: http://servicesbeta4.esri.com/arcgis/rest/services/Utilities/ExportWebMap/GPServer/Export%20Web%20Map%20Task) You may also want to check this Silverlight sample: http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/silverlight/3.0/samples/start.htm#ExportWebMap

... if you turn off the shape column of the layers you run the query on, selectedfeature.geometry comes back as null... Just so you know, that is expected behavior. We a field is invisible in source map (mxd/msd), query result does not include values from that invisible field.

Jon, Sorry about my late response. ... but it won't let me update the table without stopping the service, because it gets locked... if you happen to have 10 SP3, then you should be able to achieve this by setting 'SchemaLockingEnabled' to False in Service Configuration file. please see this help for more info: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//000400000009000000 Regarding the whole workflow - I was wondering why can't you set a 'Definition Expression' to the joined layer to pull (and of course join) only data for that given day from the table. That way you can get rid off this intermediate FGDB. /Tanu

Just to clarify: when MapService sees a DisplayExpression, it uses the first field name used in that DisplayExpression. In your cases, your display expression ("Some String: " & [COUNTYNAME]) contains [COUNTYNAME] that's where [COUNTYNAME] is coming from... Sorry about the late response.
