The best way to reduce the size of the database is to configure the database retention policy to delete data more frequently than 180 days (60 to 90 days perhaps).

Why are my test results so different from the documentation? Is it necessary to reserve 2.5 times the available disk space? Based on our experience, it's best to have 2.5x the available disk space but results may vary. Portal can quickly consume large amounts of disk space during general usage as well as during upgrades, and the recommendation comes out of an abundance of caution. If your Portal doesn't contain much content, you may be able to get away with allocating less disk space as you found in your testing. Having more available disk space is not always a bad idea, to help accommodate system growth. Can the location of the upgrade-backup directory be modified? Yes, but only if the software is reinstalled. Once that folder structure is set during the installation process, it's not possible to move that directory after the fact. If disk space was running low, you would need to allocate more space to the entire C drive or contact Esri / an Esri Business Partner to help with a migration effort.

The short answer is no, it's not possible. Because you created a new item, even though it's identical to the original, Portal still sees it as new and starts the view count back at zero.

When following the docs for multiple NICs, set the hostname to the private IP of the machine, not the public IP. The machine name will then be that private IP value which doesn't change.

WebGISDR doesn't preform any validation in terms of the datacenter. That comment is means that usually WebGISDR is used to replicate elsewhere in the event of a fail over. Keeping both environments in the same datacenter is okay. Things to keep in mind when using this workflow to upgrade: Will there be a data freeze? Or is there an acceptable amount of data loss? Keep the primary administrator account credentials the same across both systems (i.e., portaladmin / siteadmin) Make sure to use the hosts file(s) to spoof the DNS while restoring the backup to the new set of machines Like stated above, there is no way to fully predict the issues that may come up, but Esri Tech Support is equipped to help if needed.

I believe the issue is that the WebContextURL parameter is expecting a traditional DNS entry (https://gis.example.com) and by only passing the server name in (https://gis) it's not meeting the requirements. You would need to configure your server to use an FQDN to be able to set that property.

No, ArcGIS Server (including Notebook Server) cannot be a newer version than that of Portal. You would need to run through an entire upgrade to 11.2 to be able to take advantage of that system support for RHEL.

It's not supported, regardless of the Enterprise version, like the doc mentions. Windows and linux have different file structures, and there's not a way to have the backup be able to handle switching from one to the other.

The privatePortalURL should only be set to the public DNS in a high-available (failover) style setup. Otherwise the default is to keep it as an internal DNS for communication with the other components of ArcGIS Enterprise.

ArcGIS Online doesn't support direct connections to database systems, like ArcGIS Pro / ArcGIS Enterprise. You would either need a standalone ArcGIS Server instance or a full ArcGIS Enterprise deployment in the cloud, and add the services as items to your ArcGIS Online org. While yes, desktop apps like ArcGIS Pro can connect to cloud instances of SQL Server, there's often a latency issue and Esri advises against it. The best practice is to collocate everything.
