Hi Cass, Map frame grids are independent of the draw order of features (layers) within the map. The reason for this is that some of the components of the grid - ticks, labels - are drawn not in map space, but are drawn in page space. In cases where you want certain map features (layers) to draw on top of the grid lines you will need to have actual grid features in your map. There are a number of options. The Geoprocessing tool (currently, only available in ArcMap) - Make Grids And Graticules Layer—Help | ArcGIS Desktop - creates grid component features. This tool also manipulates the extent of your map and adds a mask feature to provide the look of ticks and labels drawing "outside" the map and drawing in page space. For more information please see What are grid and graticule layers?—Help | ArcGIS Desktop. If you're just interested in creating grid line features, you could use the Geoprocessing tool - Create Fishnet—Data Management toolbox | ArcGIS Desktop. You could then change the draw order in the map as you see fit and then remove the grid line component from the map frame grid so that you can display labels and ticks (in page space). Remember to match the origin and intervals for the grid line layer and the map frame grid so they "overlay" correctly. Lastly, you can search the web for data services that provide graticules or grids that may be to your liking. For example you can get a layer package for "World Latitude and Longitude Grids" available at - http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=f11bcdc5d484400fa926dcce68de3df7. Hope this helps. Tom

Hi Greg. For the problem concerning overlapping labels you should set a buffer label ratio. For more info, please see Specify a label buffer distance to change the space between labels—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop The cut off issue appears to be a bug. I can't really tell from the screenshot, but is any actual text being cut off? It looks like it may just be the edge of the call-out that is being cut off. Also, this could be an issue with the display. If you export the map series page, do you see the entire text element (including call-out) as you would expect? If you zoom in & out of the layout view does the call-out edge appear & disappear? Thanks, Tom

Hi Steve, You are correct. You'll need to construct your own label by breaking up each part of the label. Here is an example that adds space between each part. <dyn type ="grid" "units="dms.deg"/>° <dyn type="grid" units="dms.min" showZeroMinutes="True"/>' <dyn type="grid" units="dms.sec" showZeroSeconds="true" zeroPad="True" decimalPlaces="0"/>" <dyn type ="grid" "units="dms.dir"/> Please note that I have static text outside the formatting tag for the symbol and the space between label parts. For example - "dms.deg"/>° <dyn type - the degree symbol (°) has a space next to it and both are outside of the formatting tags. Here is how this example looks on the layout. Tom

Steve, This functionality is available in ArcGIS Pro. We've adjusted the terminology a bit to distinguish this grid/graticule component with interior tick marks. In Pro, the grid component you highlight above is called "Intersection Points". You will need to use the add button on the right (above the "x" delete button) to add this component to your grid. For more information please see Add and modify graticules—Layouts | ArcGIS Desktop. Hope this helps. Tom

Hi Adam, For the scenario you describe you will need to make a copy of the map (not a copy of the map frame). One for each year. With each copy you can change layer visibility, add or remove layers or make other changes as you see fit. Then, in the layout you can then insert a map frame for each map (year). Map frames point to a single map. You can X number of map frames and some properties of the each of these can be different, such the spatial extent. However, some properties of the map, such as layer visibility, cannot be controlled by the map frame. For more information please see Add and modify map frames—Layouts | ArcGIS Desktop Hope this helps. Tom

Hi Ryan, Looks like you have run into a bug. Though I am unable to reproduce the issue you describe with my own data/map/layout, I can think of no reason for this behavior outside of a bug. If you can, please take this issue to technical support. In the meantime, you can select the element you want to work directly from the Contents pane (the TOC). If you want to select elements interactively you can use the lock functionality to keep from selecting elements you do not want to select. Here is a paragraph describing lock from the help topic Layouts in ArcGIS Pro—Layouts | ArcGIS Desktop Once added to a layout, elements can be selected, moved, and resized on the layout to achieve the desired look and feel. This behavior can be turned off by locking an element, preventing selection, moving, or resizing interactively on the layout. Switch between locked and unlocked views by clicking the Lock button next to the element in the Contents pane. Hope this helps. Tom

Hi Shannon, You will not be able to change the page within a single map series. You can use use two different layouts (one for each orientation) where both have the same map series. You could then use python to "stitch" together the final map series PDF. Please see MapSeries—ArcPy | ArcGIS Desktop for more information. Hope this helps. Tom

Hi Zach, Changes made to the map such as changing layer visibility, layer drawing order, layer symbology and coordinate system, will be reflected in any layout map frames that point to the map. Map frames can have an extent (including time and range) that is different so that you can zoom/pan to a different part of the map. However, there is no current functionality that severs the link between the map and the layout map frames referencing the said map. Tom

Hi Meredith, First, to answer the question directly above, changing the units of the scale bar should only affect the scale bar. It will not affect your map or any other element on your map. Only the scale bar. The units available to the scale bar are taken from the list of Distance units. Though we have many units to choose from we chose only a subset for the default list. Unfortunately, Nautical Mile is not a member of the default group. As Thomas Colson highlighted above you can add Nautical Mile to the list of Distance units. It from this list that appropriate unit drop downs, such as Scale Bar units, draw their units. Currently, this is a project setting and any customization is only available for the particular project. You can use templates to streamline this process. If you want to have Nautical Mile as a Distance unit automatically available for new projects I would recommend either creating a project template (.aptx file) where you have already added Nautical Mile to the list or saving a layout template (.pagx file) where the scale bar has been previously configured for Nautical Mile. In the layout template case, existing scale bars that are part of the layout template that was originally created & saved with Nautical Mile as its unit will be in Nautical Mile. However, using a layout template will NOT change the default Distance unit list. Therefore, the drop down in the scale bar pane will not show Nautical Mile. This should not affect the accuracy of the Nautical Mile scale bar. It ONLY affects what units are available in the drop down. For information on project templates please refer to Create a project template—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop. For information on how to use a project template see Create a new project—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop. For more information about layout files see Save a layout file—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop. Hope this helps. Tom Bole

Hi Peter, It's likely you ran into a bug. The Pro legend was not properly supporting feature service point layers. This has been resolved with version 2.1. We also discovered a bug where all legend classes were being returned for unique value rendered feature service (point, line, polygon) when no features were present in the map extent. This issue has been addressed in version 2.2. Hope this helps, Tom
