Something I noticed right away that you want to remedy if you can do it, put underscores in your folders and filenames instead of using spaces. For example "Tim_GIS_Work" instead of "Tim GIS Work". There are several processes in GIS that get tripped up when a path includes spaces. When these processes blow up, they usually don't explicitly provide an error message that this is the cause - instead they just blow up with a generic error or no error at all. If this can remedied, it will save you many future hassles. Now, I know it is easier said than done in any environment with multiple users. Non-GIS users don't understand that this is a constraint of ESRI software. But it is well worth doing, if only to preserve your sanity. This won't resolve your current issue, but will help prevent future issues. Chris Donohue, GISP

Unfortunately, it is not a simple re-sourcing. I was hoping it would be like typical broken links, where if you fix on the rest that are in the same place get fixed. Or in this case, if I fixed one de-linked feature class that participates in the Version that all the rest of the feature classes in that Version would be automatically be fixed. It doesn't work that way, though. Here's a simple example with just a few layers (we usually have more than a dozen feature classes that are modified in the Version). Now, we can go to Layer Properties, Source tab, Set Data Source, browse for the layer, then Add, then close, then change to the Version. But we have to do this for all the layers. Sort of a pain. Then when the Version needs to go to another person they have to redo the who process. Chris Donohue, GISP

I'm currently editing landbase layers in the City's enterprise geodatabase and we are running into an issue with being able to share mxds that contain a Version. For example, when I point my boss at the mxd I made with my Version in it, and he opens the mxd I used when editing, all the links to my Version's feature classes are broken. However, if my boss starts a brand new mxd, then loads in the feature classes, then changes to my Version, he can see my Version fine. We talked with our IT folks and they think it is related to how our network logins are used as part of the data paths set in the mxd. For example, my name is part of my login and the network adds my name to the path. So when my boss logs in, that "Path" doesn't exist for him as it trying to do the pathing though his name not mine. So my question is, is there a way to allow sharing of mxds that contain a Version between two people so they can both see the version without the link breaking? We can continue to do the workaround, but it is annoying to have to pull in all the feature classes again, change version, resymbolize, set up the labeling, etc, every time a different person needs to look at the version. This make it difficult when we are reviewing and need several people to individually check that changes satisfy their requirements. Technical details: ArcGIS Desktop 10.2.1 Advanced ArcSDE 10.2.1 SQL Server 2008 R2 Both my boss and I are "owners" in SDE of the landbase data. The Versions I made have permissions set to "Public". I recognize this is probably a complicated issue, with the interactions between the network, ArcGIS, SDE, etc but wanted to throw it out there in case folks had run into something similar and could provide a way to resolve this. I'm far from an SDE expert, so could very likely be overlooking an obvious solution. One possibility: Check out this thread Spelling Sensitivity in Geocoding . In it Bruce Harold (ESRI) suggests using the 10.x locators, as they are an improvement over 9.x, which used Soundex. Now, as to how to actually implement them, we'd need someone more knowledgeable. Also, many folks have the same requirements and may know of other options. Can you elaborate on some of the issues you encountered? This will help folks looking at this to provide suggested solutions. Here's some questions: Can you describe the data you have from the Electric company. Is the Electric company data in GIS? Or is it a spreadsheet with coordinates? What format is it in? Can you elaborate on the comment This data lacks accuracy compared to the GIS data attribute table for the street light layer. Is the accuracy issue spatial or attribute? Or both? Can you provide more detail? For example, "many of the ID's don't match between the Town data and the Electric data." Which software and what version of the software are you using? Are you working in an enterprise geodatabase (SDE)? File Geodatabase? Personal Geodatabase? Shapefile? What is the accuracy desired? Also, if you have screenshots of the data that you can post here, both in terms of attributes and how it looks spatially, that would be of great help. Chris Donohue, GISP

Just so you are aware of it, it is pretty common for ArcMap to show the "Not Responding" message if you are doing any heavy processing. While the "Not Responding" message is usually a very bad sign for most software, it is not the end of the world with ArcMap. Oftentimes it is still working fine. One of the oddities of ArcMap.... So the bigger question is then whether what you are experiencing is normal given your system, settings, etc. As Dan Patterson suggested, can you provide more details on what you are doing when you encounter this? Also, if you have 10.3, the issue may be due to it probably not being certified for Windows 10: October 10, 2015 UPDATE: Windows 10 support begins at ArcGIS 10.3.1 Is Windows 10 certified with ArcGIS Products? So that begs the question, is the "Not Responding" behavior something new since you upgraded to Windows 10 (it is not clear from your original post). Chris Donohue, GISP

There are a variety of reasons that can cause this process to go awry, so the first step is to elicit some details: What Version of ArcMap are you using? What format are the ACS files in? Excel, .dbf, another format? Are the ACS files unmodified (same as when you got them from whatever source you have) or have they been modified? If they have been modified, what has been done to them? If the ACS files are in a format that can be viewed in ArcCatalog, if you look at the properities for the GEO.id field, what does it display? In ArcCatalog, does it indicate this field is String (text), Single, Double, etc? Is the fieldname really GEO.ID, with the period between the two? I ask as the period between the GEO and the ID could be the issue. I'm assuming in this specific case the the fieldname reads GEO.ID before any Join was made. Chris Donohue, GISP

Removing the text is dependent on how it is being provided with the raster. Some possibilities and outcomes: The Text is part of the raster background image AND the image resides on your computer/server. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to remove the text in this case (though workarounds are possible if you want to do Photoshop or other processing, but this can get complicated). The text is on an image coming from an image service, like using "Add Basemap" in ArcGIS. Usually there is no way to turn the text off in this case, though occasionally some images do have a setting. In ArcMap in the Table of Contents expand the raster by clicking on the plus sign to see if it breaks out into several subgroups. If it does, one might be the text part. If so, uncheck that part to turn off the text. The text is actually annotation on a separate layer than the raster. If this is the case, you can turn it off. In ArcMap, see if it is listed separately from the raster in the Table of Contents. If so, you can turn it off in the Table of Contents by unchecking the checkbox for it. The text is actually annotation in your mxd. If this is the case, you can turn it off (or make a copy of the mxd, then select the annotation and delete it). To see if this is the case, in ArcMap, in the Table of Contents, right-click the word "Layers", then choose "Properties...", then in the "Data Frame Properties" window that comes up click on the tab called "Annotation Groups". Uncheck one by one the groups (there might be several) and hit Apply, and then see if in each case the text is still there. Chris Donohue, GISP

Both Dan Patterson and Kyle Balke, GISP have important points on what may be causing the unexpected behavior. It may be that you are trying to edit your shapefile outside the established methods, which is why it is not working correctly. Can you elaborate on the specific processes you are doing to make the changes to your shapefile? It would be best to ensure the process you are using is viable, as there are some processes people use that seem like they would work but actually have negative consequences. For example, editing a shapefile attributes using Excel to change the values in the .dbf part of the shapefile - that is NOT a valid method, as it does not update the linkages between the table (.dbf) and the spatial index (.shx). However, it is easy to assume since one can open the dbf in Excel that this is OK. Also, the link below may prove helpful to recover files that are already showing unexpected behavior (though you probably want to figure out why they are getting corrupted first). I'm seeing some of the impacts. All the values in the field geom_fleec became zero. zeopunkt and import_zei likewise got zeroed out. This is definitely odd behavior. Just curious - any idea where shapefile came from? Any chance it was a non-GIS application that created it? Some applications output shapefiles, but not to the full standard that is used in GIS. Maybe also the shapefile, irrespective of its source, got corrupted? You may also want to consider moving the data to a File Geodatabase, which tends to be more stable. Chris Donohue, GISP
