I'm getting some strange behavior. First, I am assigning the File Handler to Explorer for layer packages here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ArcGIS\bin. Then, when I double click, the first time, I typically get an error and Explorer eventually opens with no data. I can see that the package is unpacking, however. The line that was throwing the error: for lyr in arcpy.mapping.ListLayers(mxd, 'accum_xy_layer', df)[0]: Not sure why this is, I'll look into it. Glen, I'm guessing that this probably doesn't work because you have two different things going on. When you select an item in the list by using the index [0], you are grabbing that one item out of the list. So what your code is saying is that you want to loop through the list, but also only grab index [0] in the list. Another thing to try is Select by Location and export the selected features to a new shp/fc (right click in the TOC > Data > Export Data). ... View more

If every method does not work (Select by location, Clip, Intersect, etc), You might have to first break the 15 million record shapefile into 2, 3, or 4 separate shapefiles. Then, do a Select by Location and once you have the subsets selected by location, you can append the outputs all back together using the Append GP tool. ... View more

So is the layer already in the map? Perhaps when you are running it through the Python window, you aren't needing to create another layer object because it is already in the map, so you just call the layer. Once it is in a script, you are creating a layer (not in the map) are making a selection and wanting to zoom, but it isn't really in the map yet. Not sure if this is it, but just a though. If your layer is in the map, could you instead use ListLayers and use a wildcard to find the applicable layer and then perform the selection on that layer object? ... View more

It would be kind of interesting to see if the ArcGIS Online or Add Data buttons were available and working through Customize > Customize Mode > Commands. Just search for the buttons and drag and drop them onto the file menu. Not sure why they wouldn't be there in the first place though. ... View more

Weird, I'd start by renaming or deleting the normal mxt and restarting ArcMap- C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI\Desktop10.1\ArcMap\Templates\Normal.mxt. Sounds like a strange UI issue that could be due to a corrupt normal template. ... View more
