Hi ! Something like this ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_wJ8vYtMmU 🙂 If you want scientific precision, I'd use the ArcGIS tools which were built specifically for this task that calculate those things with raster files ( using an image based process ) to calculate the height of the resulting flood water above terrain at each point in the city. You could use that image and create a new terrain layer in CityEngine and use this as base for an animated water shader *. It seems the above user did something very similar in that video above. *) using something like 0:45 here : http://vimeo.com/55865390#at=0 If you want to go without image-based process but rather particle based, I guess you would lose some scientific rationality because the way how these simulations are run are always a little unpredictable and only hardly properly measurable (m3, flood level) because the only real output usually is a polygonal mesh which can only hardly be converted to a comprehensible hazard-zone map. So the rendering / visualization of the flood is 1 task - the display of the raw statistical data (maps & metrics) is an other. Cheers ! M.

I start to believe you want to align the data horizontally because the position of the streets is not correct in relation to what's shown on the satellite picture .. But the 'align' tools all ONLY ALIGN VERTICALLY. To fix the horizontal alignment, make sure that the GeoTIFs for both the heightmap and satellite image share the exact same extent and are projected in the SAME projection as the SCS ( Scene Coordinate System ) in CityEngine. If done correctly, the data will match automatic ( except of course the vertical component of the streets ).

Sorry, wrong text in my post just before. fixed it now. I meant : Once the graphs are aligned to the terrain, you can then align the terrain back to the street's shapes.

Hi ! You mean 'Align Graph to Terrain', right ? Yes, that would be the correct workflow. Then, after the streets are projected onto the terrain, you can select ALL shapes of your streets, then align the Terrain to those Shapes by using Layer > Align Terrain to Shapes m.

Hi ! It's an interesting topic. The main thing I need to know is : Is it rather a VFX project, where you: - work with CFD (computational fluid dynamics) techniques with 'particle based' / 'grid based' techonolies ( using RealFlow, PhoenixFD, Naiad, [FlowLine] or an other software ) or if it's more an engineering project, where you're : - basically just interested in the scientific 'end result'. Based on this, the approaches may be entirely different. Lemme know. 🙂 Matt

Hi ! A question in between : How relevent are GFA and FAR calculations in such a masterplan of yours ? We've been in contact with multiple offices and city administrations which do similar work with CE, so I assume it's also very important for you. Since the FAR value is GFA / parcel area .. What's such a reference 'parcel' in the image you have posted ? Per 'little block' I see or over the whole project ? Let me know .. M.

Yes, it's the idea that something like this will be implemented. But only time will tell .. Cheers ! Matt

Hi .. I have tried again replicating the time out and thus crash of CE. with use of a python script, but I was not able to crash it. Though I did have such crashes before too. To be able to track the issue down, we need a proper way to reproduce the crash consistently. If you have a specific scene or general way of forcing a timeout of the driver, I'd be happy to hear about it. Please let me know.. Matt

Hi ! I got your answer, provided by one of the tech leads. The answer is "yes". ArcGIS License manager is actually a 32 bit application and the communication between CE client and license manager is TCP/IP. So CE 64bit can communicate with our 32 bit LM. Hope this helps ! Matt

Hi ! Not sure if you have seen the ArcGIS related workflows : http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?owner=CityEngine&title=ArcGIS%20-%20CityEngine%20Workflows The 'best workflow' usually is adapted to the inputs and needed outputs. So in general, I'd say that CityEngine - if used correctly - can be immensely useful in tasks which lead to designs as e.g. in the beautiful images you've shown as reference. Though, to help you better in a specific - and less generic - way, I need a little background info on what your 'typical project' starts with. I have a Master's degree in Architecture, so feel free to use your daily work terminology. 😉 Cheers ! Matt

Hi ! We're constantly working on that user experience and are focused on making exactly those points you mention reality. I cannot tell you yet in which direction it goes. But we're aware that by far most users don't like to code and that this could be avoided in different ways. So whether on the GUI or rules, we're trying to improve th user experience wherever possible. Hope this motivates you for now.. 🙂 Cheers ! Matt

Hi ! For the use in CityEngine, you must (somehow) convert to a heightmap image file, best in 32 bit. Other terrain types such as TIN, contour lines and such are not yet supported, but are on the wishlist. Use e.g. 'Leveller' by Daylong Graphics to avoid the ArcGIS path.

Hi ! 1] A .3ws file is an exported 'container', which cannot be dynamically updated. You NEED an other export. Though, using Python scripting you can automate this process by e.g. - Opening a scene - Import GDB - Assign Rules - Export to .3ws 2] Refresh is not yet possible. A reimport is needed. [We're working on tighter workflows.] 3] This will be possible once a public API becomes available, but this will take some time. If it's only some icons and colors, you may also try and browse through the .css files in the webviewer's folder (ce.lib project in the CE Workspace). Note there's no tech support available for this mission .. 😉 Matt
