can you show one of your x and y coordinates? I suspect that the wrong coordinate system is being used for the records versus what you need the coordinates to be in.

Do you have access to the sde database through SQL management studio installed on your computer? If you are not able to log into the database through SQL management studio, then there is probably an issue with the server access to the sql db.

Please send a screen shot of your field names and a few of the records. Thank you. Also, try saving the layer out as a csv file, there can be some formatting being held in the Excel file that would be removed in the csv.

If you pull the shapefile into your map can you use the identify tool to see your attribution? If so, then you should still be able to use it for your analysis, but you would have to know your analysis parameters for that data before your use the data. Also, is there any metadata associated with the shapefile? This should have the attributes listed if it is complete.

Take a look at your task manager to see how much available memory you have before you run the process, then leave it open to see what happens when you try to process, I suspect that you do not have enough memory.

In the past we have looked at where the majority of points are and where the least error is located. So, if the majority of the points are along a UTM boundary, and the majority are in the left zone, we would set the points to the left UTM zone for this data (lower error on the right side of the UTM zone versus the left). This would be for specific areas, but for state wide data we would generally choose one of the systems previously mentioned.
