I've solved my problem. I incorrectly assumed that this was some kind of usual ArcMap behavior, and I simply needed to find a way to deal with it. Thank you for your replies, Jason, while I didn't go through the debugging process you suggested, you did get me thinking along the correct lines. Since I have a number of other ArcMap add-ins installed on my machine, I decided to uninstall all of them then test for this behavior. After doing this, it worked fine, the locks were going away even after saving edits. I reinstalled my current project and it still worked fine. Using the process of elimination, I narrowed the problem down to an add-in called Attribute Assistant, from ESRI's water utilities team. Maybe there is a memory leak, as Jason suggested, but I didn't look into it further since I don't need the Attribute Assistant anymore. They have also updated it a number of times since I installed it, so maybe it's fixed.

Thanks for the reply, Alexander. I don't know if this matters, but I should clarify that any potential edits that I'm talking about here would be performed with the standard editing tools in the ArcMap UI, not anything performed in my code. I do use FinalReleaseComObject after certain tasks to remove locks, it just doesn't work the same way if the data has been edited.

I believe that this behavior may not actually have anything to do with my code. I can very easily reproduce the problem with simple File geodatabase and a single feature class: Add the feature class to ArcMap. You can see the lock files created in the GDB's folder. Remove the feature class from ArcMap and the lock files go away. Now, add the feature class to ArcMap, make some edit, then save edits and stop editing. Remove the feature class from ArcMap and the lock files will not go away. Closing ArcMap will remove them. I'm wondering, maybe there is some method that gets fired off when ArcMap is closed (that I have no clue about), which finally releases the locks after a feature class has been edited, and if it would be something I could incorporate into my code so I wouldn't have to close ArcMap. If you still think that posting some code would help, I can certainly put something together.

Basically, I've got an ArcMap project (ArcGIS version 10.0) with some custom buttons in it. One of the buttons uses ArcObjects to change the data source of several layers from a feature class in one File geodatabase to a similar feature class in a different File geodatabase. I've got it working so that this process releases any locks on the original feature class that was in the map (using FinalReleaseComObject). After the data source gets switched, the button also uses ArcObjects to delete the original feature class. All of this functionality works perfectly if no edits have been made to the data. The button is not enabled if you are editing. The problem I'm having is, if the user does make some edits to the data and saves the edits, then the locks on this feature class will not be released until the ArcMap application is closed, even after my button has changed the layer's data source. I can manually remove the layers from the map, I can load a new or different map document from the File menu, but none of these things releases the lock on this feature class. Like I said, if the user has not made or saved any edits, this all works properly. Any ideas on how I can get the lock to go away without closing the application window?

The Query Features add-in is awesome. I am trying to create my own add-ins that zoom to the results of a query and flash, without adding any other layer or modifying an existing layer in the Explorer project. That is exactly how this add-in works, but I can't figure out how to do it this way. I want to be able to restrict it to certain layers and attributes only. Is there any way the author could post the source code? Thanks!

I figured out the problem after taking a break from it while writing my 1st reply. My index layer was a shapefile. "Blank" string attributes in a shapefile are considered a single space or something like that so DDP doesn't think they are empty. You can test it out by starting an edit session, calculating some string into the empty field, then completely delete it and refresh the DDP. It will work briefly, at least until you finish the edit session. So I imported my index into a geodatabase, re-calculated adjacent fields and this feature works properly now.

I have the same exact problem and I can't figure it out, I've tried everything I can think of. I'm running version 10.0 SP4. Dynamic text doesn't honor an empty attribute as it is supposed to. I calculated adjacent pages using the toolbox tool. It is setup so that the text for adjacent pages that do exist works properly, it shows "See Page 2" in my case, for example. But for adjacent pages that are blank/don't exist it shows "See Page". If I define a value for emptyStr, it doesn't work. If I remove any preStr or postStr, it still doesn't work, it is just blank in Layout view. It doesn't even show [empty] in Layout view like the help describes. I'm wondering if Ryan might have figured it out.

Thank you for the answer! I'm glad it wasn't just me going nuts! But here is a problem with ESRI's implementation of IWorkspaceFactory not supporting writing to the root of a drive: if you do define the output directory as the root of a drive for some process, it doesn't generate an error. It reports the process as successful. For example, just use the copy tool (data management) to copy a shapefile to C:\ and it claims to have succeeded yet the files weren't copied.

If I try to use geoprocessing, either with a script, toolbox, or whatever, to copy a shapefile to a drive's root, it doesn't work. For example, copy input - C:\workspace\shapefile.shp, copy output - C:\shapefile_copy.shp. The process says it is successful but it doesn't actually create the files. Why doesn't this work? Whether or not people should be putting data in a drive's root is not relevant. For an example, my office network creates a network drive (U:) mapped to a personal folder for everybody in the office. I can't use geoprocessing to copy a shapefile directly into U:\. Not that I do this, I would rather put data into a folder within a drive, but this should still be possible. I don't think it is any kind of permissions issue as I have full control to these drives, I can create, copy and delete things from these root "directories" using the windows file system. The reason this is even a problem that came up is because if I create a model, add-in, or whatever that allows the user to choose a folder for output and for whatever reason they choose a drive's root then it won't work or might even throw an error. Has anyone run into this before?

By the way, you can change a thread title by hitting Edit Post and then Go Advanced, although I think you can't do this once there is a reply.

Meter reading sheets are normally generated by your utility billing software, and the meter serial number is the key piece of information for the meter reader. It is what the reader confirms before taking a reading. The customer address is secondary, because some meters are in those odd locations you mentioned. The sheets often include last month's reading and maybe average usage for the customer so the reader can do a common sense check on the new reading. Ah, thanks, it did occur to me that this would be a good way to do it and it's nice to know that some utilities do it this way. I need to get the serial number database up to date. Ryan, I work for a utility with around 81,000 water meters we use map books for our commercial routes only because the location of the residential meters is pretty standard, and the routes are sequenced so that the meter reader walks from one meter to another. One advantage of having the map books is that we don't have to assign the same routes to the same meter reader each month. We also tend to have alot of turnover with our meter readers and the maps help to bring the new meter readers up to speed. If you would like to see some examples of our maps I'd be happy to send a couple to you. Josh Thanks this is some good input as well. I appreciate your offer and certainly wouldn't mind seeing an example of yours however, I've finished our map book and the system operator seemed quite happy with it. We've got less than 400 meters so my task was certainly less complicated!

I am running ArcGIS 9.3.1 SP 2 (ArcInfo) on Windows XP. This is my first time using representations in a map and I've added a legend that has both shapefile symbols and representation markers. The shapefile symbols appear correct as usual, centered vertically with each other and horizontally with their label text, but the representation markers are not lined up at all. I attached an example of what's going on. The top and bottom symbols are the correct shapefile ones and those in between are from representations. Does anybody know if this is a bug or how to fix this? I know I could convert to graphics and get everything lined up from there but that's not an acceptable solution because I want to retain the dynamic nature of the legend. Thanks!

Thank you for your replies, it is encouraging to know that I'm going in the right direction from somebody who has been through a similar project. I also appreciate your insights from your experience, you confirm some of my thoughts such as the map book really only being needed to assist a new meter reader on the first few times around.

Josh, Thanks for your reply. That solution would definitely be the best and I think we are looking to do something along those lines in the future. Unfortunately we do not have the time or funding for a system like that right now, which is why I am tasked to make a map book to aid meter reading.

Hello! For background, I work in a county GIS department and our county is taking over the water system of a small local town. It's our first time running a utility as far as I know. I have been tasked over the past few months with mapping out the water system as best we can, short of digging it up, and there was not much solid information to start with. I mapped all the valves, hydrants and water meters with GPS and did a bit of connect-the-dots in combination with local knowledge and record drawings for water lines. Now the time is coming up for our guys to take over meter reading duty. There is no remote/radio reading, it's all done manually. It was done by the previous operators by following a printout that is sorted by account number, this number determines the route taken. Many of the meters are in alleys behind houses, it is difficult to determine what meter goes to what house in many cases, so following the printout seems vital to keeping track of where you are and what meter you are reading. This method seems to be very dependent on local familiarity and somewhat inefficient. Does anybody know if this is the general method for water utilities to read meters manually? My task right now is to create a map book to assist water meter reading and my concern is creating something that will actually be useful and not just garbled pages of dots and numbers. My initial idea was to have somewhat large-scale pages (1"=100' maybe) with meter points connected by a leader to the account number labels, overlayed on a lightened (for contrast) aerial photo. But I'm still in the initial design and was wondering if anybody here could share their thoughts on how to go about this. Thanks, Ryan
