Hi Eric, thank you for pointing this idea out here. If a component such as a Reporting Service was not available, how would you envision web services to interact with SSPS? Looking into their documentation, it says it reads from a shapefile, but does the product support web services?

Hello vish, this idea has been around for a while, but it's a good submission and I'm curious to know some more about the use cases for a service type like this. I'd also like to know if, since the Idea was posted, you have found an alternative solution to integrate maps into your reporting. Please feel free to reach out privately or reply on this thread.

Hi Keith, I hope I can help with this concern here. When you are using ArcGIS Pro to connect to ArcGIS Enterprise, you have the ability to share map services much like previous workflows you are accustomed to, and you are not entirely reliant on using hosted layers as if you were connecting to ArcGIS Online. In the screenshot below, I've taken six layers and organized them into two groups in ArcGIS Pro. I've then selected the group layers and chose to share them as a web layer to my ArcGIS Enterprise deployment: When sharing the web layer, it is possible to choose to "Reference registered data" (see below) - this is similar to an ArcMap - ArcGIS Server publishing workflow, except we are connected to Portal for ArcGIS with a federated ArcGIS Server (which is a fundamental aspect of the Base ArcGIS Enterprise Deployment introduced at 10.5, and is required to be able to publish to ArcGIS Enterprise from ArcGIS Pro). By default, the "Map Image" layer type is enabled - this is going to create a Map Image Layer in the portal, but in the background it's also going to publish a Map Service to the federated ArcGIS Server and then add it as a Map Image Layer to the "My Content" directory of the publishing user in the portal. Once this is published to Portal for ArcGIS, looking into the item details of the Map Image Layer shows a link to its REST endpoint, which shows the group layers are preserved: This REST endpoint can be added to web applications and maps, and the groups/layers can be turned on/off individually like the current user experience you are familiar with. In essence, the group layer functionality is still preserved for workflows involving publishing when using ArcGIS Pro, so long as you are connecting to ArcGIS Enterprise which is set up with the base deployment, and you are choosing to publish the layers "by reference." Please let me know if you have any further questions/concerns about this workflow/functionality, and I'll be happy to follow up with you separately.

Thank you for your response, Yossi. I certainly understand that the convenience-factor of having the copy/paste functionality built into the Portal web site would add usability improvements compared to using the other methods I mentioned above. I will continue to investigate the viability of this idea, but in the meantime I am glad that the ArcGIS Online Assistant can be of use at this time. Thank you again!

I also wanted to add that if the ArcGIS Online Assistant does not meet your needs, there may be ways to achieve this through Python scripting. The following documentation links provide some examples that may help get you started with such an initiative: Example: Copy content—Portal for ArcGIS (10.5) | ArcGIS Enterprise Example: Transfer item ownership—Portal for ArcGIS (10.5) | ArcGIS Enterprise

Thank you for posting this idea! We currently have the ArcGIS Online Assistant which allows for copying content, and despite its name can also be used to connect to Portal for ArcGIS to perform those actions in a portal. In addition, the ArcGIS API for Python allows for content management such as this to happen. Some documentation on this is below: Clone portal users groups and content | ArcGIS for Developers Would the ArcGIS Online Assistant, or the ArcGIS API for Python meet your needs in this case? If not, any further information would be great. Thank you!

Thank you for posting this idea Debbie Murphy If possible, I'd like to understand some more about how this granularity in group permissions would be utilized and why it should be independent of organization-wide permissions. Currently, in Portal for ArcGIS, we expect these types of permissions to be handled through the use of custom roles which define what a user can or cannot do across the entire organization. Are you able to provide some context into situations where a single user who has a certain set of privileges throughout an organization would be required to have less capabilities within a single group only? This will help to promote the viability of such an idea's implementation.

Thank you for posting this idea, Sean. Through the use of Image Services which reference time-aware data, it is possible to display a raster time slider. Here is a sample page on our ArcGIS API for JavaScript documentation page which shows such a service in action. An older blog post here outlines an ArcMap-based workflow on preparing raster data in such a way. Based on the description you provided, I think that perhaps utilizing dynamic services may be more beneficial than cached ones if possible. For example, our documentation on map authoring considerations makes mention that caches are a good option if your data is unlikely to change, but the nature of time-enabled data suggests a continuous change taking place to the underlying data used by the service. Would time-aware image services served dynamically like the suggestion above answer some of the requirements of this Idea? I'd be happy to hear more information about why this offering is not viable for you. Thanks!

Hi Chris, In reading through your overview and current way of tackling these workflows, it sounds like you may still be in a position where versioning could be implemented at the Enterprise Geodatabase level and may be beneficial. As long as the data is still stored in a registered Enterprise Geodatabase, and is not copied into a managed database (such as the ArcGIS Data Store), then the workflow linked in my comment may still be applicable. Here is an additional resource which outlines the ways that versioned data can be implemented in workflows involving offline edits. The core principle of maintaining a version for field edits which can be posted and reconciled with a parent version following data validation is still applicable here, even if the maps won't be going offline. If it works for you, I'll reach out via a private message so that we can discuss some of the finer details about your project there and hopefully help to understand your workflow further. Aside from this, the workflow which you have detailed above is a clever solution, and the idea posting does raise some interesting use-cases where approval processes for online edits are needed. The current "unfixable" which you have referred to is an idea which currently has a corresponding posting on the Ideas site, so you are certainly not alone in this request: Publish service that is symbolized on multiple attributes I recommend that you upvote this idea if you have not already done so, so that it gains some more traction on this site. Best, Thomas
