Working just a minute ago with the new credentials using FileZilla, although I did have some connection issues yesterday. Not sure what is going on with Esri's mft service. It has been pretty stable. Stuart

On ArcGIS 10.2.1 on Windows 7 sp1, 64-bit. Came across this when I was doing a little LiDAR work. Scripting in the Python Window with arcpy.SimplifyBuilding_cartography and then arcpy.SimplifyPolygon_cartography with correct syntax. Tried to move over to running from Cartography ArcToolbox -> Generalization where Simplify Building was fine, but Cartography -> Generalization -> Simplify Polygon was dropping the Tolerance fields. Then noted the same thing for Simplify Line. Have a ticket open with Esri tech support, and have done the usual troubleshooting. Windows registry settings for Internet Explorer\Zone\0 and Zone\1 have expected 0 values for the 1200 and 1400 keys (controlling ActiveX and scripting) computer (zone 0) and local intranet (zone 1). IE11 on Windows 7 sp1, 64-bit. Not running in protected mode. Tried multiple permutations of IE Security settings for Internet and Local intranet levels--with no resolution. Strangely, when Local intranet to Custom -> Low level, and restarting, I would get exactly one launch of either Simplify toolbox with the Tolerance fields displaying. Launch either again and they were gone. So this is some weird ActiveX/.NET permissions issue in at least these two toolboxes. Fortunately calling the toolbox by batch, or using the Python window or an out of process Python script all seem to function. Just not as easy for folks looking to flush through model builder. Does anyone know if this has been assigned a NIM bug number? I've asked and will post it here if I get a response from Esri. Stuart

Adam, You need to move beyond ShapeFile based GIS and start using a GeoDataBase--Esri's File GDB are used extensively in ArcGIS for Desktop geoprocessing, so arguments for adopting their use to replace Esri ShapeFile is compelling. But, you'll need to be on ArcGIS for Desktop 10.2.1 Standard to do any substantive maintenance of your File GeoDataBase(s) and related feature topology. See pgs 27-31 of the attached Esri PDF (or download here: ArcGIS 10.2 Desktop Functionality Matrix PDF). Stuart

John, Interesting issue. ArcReader 10.1 sp1 is listed as supported on Windows 8 in the System Requirements. So a couple of thoughts. Are the tablets Running MS Windows 8 Professional and having problems with ArcReader 64-bit or 32-bit flavor OS? When ArcReader 10.1 sp1 was installed to the tablet was the installer adjusted using Windows 8 compatibility mode, or the compatibility trouble shooter, to run in Windows XP SP3 mode or maybe Windows 7? If not, something to test. Have you followed a crash in progress with Sysinternals ProcessMonitor logging events? Catch a verbose log and work backward from the error to possibly find the faulting .DLL, that will help identify the issue and may lead to a work around, e.g. driver update (or roll back) as has been common with the MS Surface tablets. I might poke at this a bit for some fun--but will have to load a tablet with Windows 8 first though. Good luck. Post back if you make any progress or hear something from Esri support. Stuart

@brownlg33, I could be wrong, but my understanding is that IF you have installed the 64-bit ArcGIS background geoprocessing extension, then you MUST install the 64-bit support for ArcHydro Tools. The 64-bit background geoporcessing replaces some of the 32-bit compiled Python components, and the 64-bit ArcHydro support is then needed to work with them. Otherwise with the default ArcGIS for Desktop installation you should use the 32-bit ArcHydro Tools installer. Christine, or another of the Water Resource team, may have additional perspective. Eric, The 'in-process' calls to Python, including the ArcMap Python console, remain 32-bit as the underlying arcpy C++ libraries they wrap are 32-bit. Addition of the 64-bit geoprocessing extension replaces only a subset of the arcpy components with 64-bit versions--and the extension manages the correct calls when geoprocessing is run 'out-of-process'. Point is, you can't use a native 64-bit Python within ArcMap--it remains 32-bit. Stuart

Cyril, Wow, that is kind of a corner case--I quit trying to use Windows Server 2008 R2 on my workstations because the Desktop user rolls were troublesome and stayed with 64-bit Windows 7. But thank you for posting the link suggesting to adjust the TSMSI key, glad you were able to find it. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\TSAppSrv\TSMSI\Enable That tweak should should help for any RDP or Citrix VM users. Had the folks at Aquaveo been of help? Usually they are spot on with their tech support. Stuart

Randy, Melita referred to a process of georeferencing the raster image, done using the Spatial Analyst extension. It basically takes the 0,0 cartesian that pixels of your picture are stored in, and scales & rotates them to fit onto a real world spatial coordinate system. The image can then be 'rectified' to recast the pixels into their correct coordinates as used in ArcGIS. As you've done thus far--all that has happened is the raster is placed as a layer into a data frame using its 0,0 origin. Realworld points will be 100's of thousands of feet from the current position. Suggest that the alternative, CityEngine would allow you to generate your entire sceenscape. You can use realworld coordinate system or a simple cartesian. Look through some of the demo's and you'll get an idea why it might be the better choice for rendering your 'imaginary' game setting. I see the file Pythonw.exe, but nothing happens when I click on it. The pythonw.exe program is not a GUI program. It is used in scripting a Python program that requires no console window for user input or review. For both the Python IDLE IDE GUI and the PythonWin IDE GUI, with Windows 8 or 8.1 you have to launch the program from the metro search panel (the Magnifying glass). Or, you can add a "Programs" toolbar to the task bar to mimic what you were used to through the Windows 7 releases. You can follow one of these guides:
Short and sweet... http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-add-an-all-programs-button-to-the-windows-8-taskbar More technically complete... http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2460-start-menu-toolbar-create-windows-8-taskbar.html
Point is with this Start Menu -> Programs restored, you'll have the familiar clickable icon to open either IDE with.
