Hmmm it is possible. I gave up on our systems and loaded ArcMap / Catalog on the GIS server then just remote into it fire up catalog on the server and run the tools to create whatever DB I need as I was running into some of the same connection issues awhile back. Using the above method I just create the DB in catalog and point to the key code - then set the permissions in SSMS then shell back to catalog and set any other permissions I need to. Also use SSMS to change the parameters for the log and mdf files and other stuff as needed. Additionally I switched and started using a named instance and all spatial DB's are built under that named instance using the DBO schema instead of the SDE schema. You can still lock folks out of a DB in SSMS by just not mapping them to a DB in SSMS under their login or group they are assigned to. That was my solution to trying to connect across the network with all the issues. Afterwards all I do then is create the desk top connection to the DB in catalog on my work station and off I go. Mayhap give the route above with loading the DK software on the server - we use a concurrent license model so no issues there. BTW the dang windows firewall is good about blocking ports for Arc / SDE so you may talk to your network folks to check that out.

It would appear that the data is reprojecting on the fly from WGS84 to Web Mercator. I would not edit the data in this case if my statement above is correct - editing in this manner will most likely induce errors into your data. Remember the first data element added to a ArcMap session sets the data frame reference for the coordinate system unless someone manually set the coordinate reference first then brought the data in. Information: Spatial reference does not match data frame—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

Paul, Have you checked that you have connection permissions to the MSSQL on the server? Use SSMS check to make sure you are mapped to the instance which allows connections. You may not have the permissions to connect to the new instance nor the permissions to create a new DB.

Hopefully I have this in the right forum if not some can move it to where it goes. Was trying to use an image for an overlay in a map I have in the portal. I pop open the overlay > change style > Location (single style) > click on symbols to change > then click on the Use an Image underlined link and NADA. I just get a blank box with a plus sign next to it. Searched through the documentation and cannot seem to find anything for what I want to do. Attached an image of where I was trying to do this at on the map in the portal. And yes have full admin in the portal.

One thing we ran across on the local install of Portal is the inability to run in mixed mode - as in we bring in the HTTP REST end point from NOAA for the stream gages and things do not work correctly.

Oh forgot to add users can fix this without admin rights on a machine since the files referenced are specific to their profile. Seems to have fixed the issue under IE 10

ALCON: I figured out one thing that has seemed to fix the issue. After I installed the package on a system I went into the My Documents for the specific user profile I installed under to the ArcGIS Explorer directory and deleted all base map files. Further each user would need to do the same for their profile. Near as I can figure out is the default base map that got installed was corrupt or something. Also check the My Basemaps directory. So far this has resolved the issue on all the machines that experienced the problem - after deleting the default base map files restart the program and it should fix the issue.

Has anyone had the ArcExplorer build 2500 just crash on a Windows 64bit system with the event logs reflecting an error with the ArcGISconnectionbin.exe file (v10.1.2.3252) with an associated fault module in the ntdll.dll ?? The system has Arc Desktop v10.0 installed also.

I had the same issue - tried loading OS patches etc to no end. The fix (at least for us) I found which does not require admin rights is to simply open Windows FILE EXPLORER navigate to the MY DOCUMENTS and delete all files under the ArcGIS Explorer directory and in the ArcGIS directory IF ONLY ArcExplorer is loaded on the machine - if you have any Arc Desktop software loaded delete only those files under the ArcGIS Explorer directory. Reopen ArcExplorer navigate to the NMF you want to open and it should work. The symptoms we had were a user would double click on a NMF file and the application would just sit there with a screen up indicating that it was loading the NMF file but would never open it. Some machines we did not have this issue on though. Hope this helps Rick

OK I have searched everywhere and in the documentation for installing and configuring the Public Safety COP under the Publish the Basemaps the instructions have you publish the topo.mxd. My question is what consumes that basemap?? Looking in the *.xml configuration files I find no reference to where that paticular basemap is consumed. Anyone know the answer?? Thx! Rick

Same here - I have pulled in some 3rd order survey marker data and two markers that are @ 350 ft apart results in an error of 4.43 ft at one marker and @ 3.2 on the other - although data that is angled NW & SE alignment seems to look OK but data in the N or S directions is off quite a bit. I am located in Washington state on on the southern end of Puget Sound. I am actually surprised at the amount of error in the spatial positioning - especially in small areas.
