Hey Jake, Yeah as stated we are testing out offline mode. Given what happened with real time multi photo submissions I got a little suspicious. Hopefully the handling of data via Wi-Fi is more stable. So in your experience they were pretty happy with the App otherwise? Thanks for your input. In the meantime I'm really eager to know whether many people experienced the same issue, and had to resort to 1) offline mode (in which case were there issues with syncing?), or 2) real time but limit to 1 photo per submission, and multiple submissions if more than 1 photo is needed.

Thanks for your help! Last week we used Collector for ArcGIS (version 10.3 on an iPad Air, AT&T) with our ArcGIS Online organization account for field data collection. We experienced loss of data, sometimes everything including the point feature itself, other times photo attachments. Since the collection was at or near urban areas and cellular signal strength was good in general, we didn’t use offline mode and it was all done real time. On day 2 of the collection there were a few instances with multi-photo points when the “submit” button was tapped it would take the App a while to process then a submission failed message would appear, offering two options – “Cancel” and “Retry”. Initially “Retry” was selected but the same failure message would appear again and again, so eventually the field crew clicked on “Cancel”. At that point the collected feature as well as attributes and photos were visible on the App, so they moved on to the next site. When they were back at the hotel (on Wi-Fi) they realized 2 points they collected during the day were completely gone, and 3 other points were missing all the photo attachments. They also noticed 2 points from day 1 were completely gone (they couldn’t recall with certainty whether the “failed to submit” message was encountered with them). Not knowing how to avoid more data loss, they went with paper and pen for the remaining of the collection and re-collection of the lost points. Once they were back in the office we did more testing. While the cellular signal strength was at least 3 bars out of 5, it was pretty easy to duplicate the issue by taking more than 3 or 4 photos and submit. Here are our questions: Is our instinct correct that our issue could be caused by the data volume submitted each time? We like the convenience and ease of set up with this solution. However based on our first project the reliability is too low for serious application. I can’t imagine we are the only one needing multiple photos for each collected features. Has data loss been a common issue? What is everyone else doing to make this solution work? I assume the reliability will improve if each submission is limited to one photo, but it’s such an interruption to the workflow. When collecting in “online mode”, is there a way to explicitly back up the data collected onto the mobile device? We are thinking maybe offline mode can be more reliable and will do some tests. But from experience, will syncing (Wi-Fi or cellular) be problematic if a collected feature contains a large number of photo attachments? Any recommendation on more reliable solutions that works with ArcGIS Online? 7. How about complete on device Apps? Update: after talking with an ESRI technical support back and forth, he started being able to duplicate the problem on his end, and has registered this issue as a bug (BUG-000089338). We did perform more tests of our own. It seems that one photo per submission/update is problem free, so while on cellular only if multi photos are needed for a collection point you'll have to update after each photo is taken. Offline mode seems to be working fine.

Never mind. It looks like uploading the zipped FGDB is why coded value domain doesn't automatically translate to dropdown. I found a 10.1 Desktop and published the service from ArcMap "Share As --> Service" and it worked.

I created a File GDB and set up a domain, and the domain was assigned to a field in a feature class. The domain behaves as expected on in ArcGIS Desktop (dropdown list when editing the content of that field). But if I zip up the FGDB and upload to ArcGIS Online to created a feature layer and edit the layer online, there is no dropdown when editing. I don't see any additional step in this tutorial, other than a different mechanism of getting data to ArcGIS Online. I don't think I can do it the same way in ArcGIS 10.0: http://doc.arcgis.com/en/collector/android/create-maps/prepare-data-desktop.htm Anyone has any idea what's going on? Thanks!

I assume that's the case based on experience. Unfortunately it's not enough when I need absolute certainty. That's why I'm hoping someone here can point me to an official ESRI document. Still appreciate your time and attention Dan.

So you are confirming that the order in which a geoprocessing tool processes features is consistent with FID/OID order? That's what I assumed and I'd like to see some official documentation on it. Are you aware where I can find it on ESRI's site? Thanks!

Thanks Dan. You mentioned "...the first one in the list to process first". What list are you referring to?

I have done search but couldn't find any ESRI documentation on this. Hopefully someone can point me to something? Say you have two features in a feature class on which you run a geoprocessing tool. How does the tool determine which feature it processes first? Is it based on the ObjectID field sorting? If you add the feature class to ArcMap, and sort the features in a way so the display in the attribute table is no longer consistent with ObjectID sorting. Then you run the Geoprocessing on the feature class within ArcMap. Will the Geoprocessing tool respect the order of the sorting, or still stick with ObjectID? I assume the behavior is no different when you run geoprocessing tools in an .NET add-in geoprocessor? Thanks!

The form was launched via ShowDialog(). After clicking a button on it to execute a function, and while the form is still open, I noticed I can interact with ArcMap (remove layers, open layer attribute table etc.) Just wonder if anyone has had similar experience, and what could have triggered this behavior. Sorry I'm not allowed to post the code, but it executes a bunch of geoprocessing tools ("update" etc.) through the Geoprocessor. I'm on ArcGIS 10.0 SP4, windows 7 64-bit. Thanks!

We are using Intellilock for obfuscation and licensing. It is inexpensive, works well, and is updated on a regular basis but don't expect any customer support. Hi Gary, I'm trying to figure out how to license an ArcGIS Add-in and bumped into your post here. How do I use intellilock on an existing add-in project? Any help is appreciated!

For a project we have a master polygon layer which is the basis for a few "produced" layers. These "produced" layers may contain some of the original features and fields, and also additional features/fields. Occasionally there is a need to modify a few polygons in the master layer (geometry/attributes), and the same modifications need to be performed on the "produced" layers as well to maintain consistency. The modifications are most often done in editing sessions (reshaping, splitting, vertices manipulation, attributes updates etc.). I wonder how I should go about and create a tool so the modification to the master layer is somehow "captured" and then automatically applied to the "produced" layers? The only method I can think of now is to ask the user to select all the polygons that have been modified (well it's already not ideal, since the user may not always perform an accurate selection), then behind the scene those features are exported to a separate feature class, which is then used to Update (geoprocessing tool) the various "produced" layers. The original "produced" layers will need to be deleted, and the output from the Update operation renamed to take the "produced" layer names. I haven't thought it through thoroughly, but another problem I already see is that this will not work if the user deleted a bunch of features. Besides, the modifications are generally very limited, while the feature classes are huge. This approach seems really cumbersome. Is tapping into the Editor object (which I haven't had any experience dealing with) the way to go? One issue is that all these layers are not in the same geodatabase. Thanks!

You should be able to download the installation files from the customer care portal: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//018t00000010000000 Thank you for the replay Jake, very helpful information. If we have the ArcGIS Sever 10.1 SP1 installer, does it typically include the installation files you mentioned for SQL express (We haven't started installing yet)? I'm hoping it's the case, as due to the structure of our organization, our office is not directly involved in software purchasing/management. I logged into my customer portal with our customer ID, but there is no order history, and I don't see anything for download.

I haven't had much experience with ArcSDE or ArcGIS server in general, and I have one question. While I was reading through the tutorial on ArcGIS API for Silverlight (I believe that was before 10.1 was released) it was mentioned somewhere that to be able to edit a feature class using a web application, the feature class must be stored in an SDE database and published as a feature service. Is the part regarding SDE still true at 10.1? Our office is finally getting an ArcGIS sever (Standard Edition at the Workgroup level) so we can play with it and look into web map application development. The system admin is going to set it up soon, and the ArcGIS Server 10.1 SP1 installer is all we've got (no Web Adaptor or ArcSDE installer/setup). Is the following scenario for testing purposes possible? If not, what else do we need to install/configure, or what is the alternative? Install ArcGIS for Sever on sever A; Using ArcGIS for Desktop on a workstation, create a file geodatabase on either sever A or some other server B on the same office LAN, and create a feature class in the FGDB and publish it as a feature service; Create a web mapping application and host it on server A (separate IIS set up necessary?); Display, query, and edit the feature class through the web application over the internet. If this scenario is possible, does ArcGIS Server create a copy of the feature class and serve the copy when I publish the FC as a service? If that is true, will I be able to access/edit this copy in ArcGIS for Desktop on the workstation?

Did you ever find a solution to this? I am having the same issue. I'm trying to upgrade from the ArcGIS API 2.4 and Silverlight 4 to API 3.0 and Silverlight 5. I get this message when I try to create a new application. I'm not a full time developer and only play with it on the side when I have time. I checked the projects and it seems this particular issue is gone. However, since it's been so long I couldn't remember what I did - checked a few places and emails, didn't see any clue. Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful.

A while back I was going through the ESRI SL 4 tutorial and set up a few projects using MS Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, thing were working fine. Haven't touched them in months and tried to work on a project today and got a pop-up message, saying "You need to install the lastest Silverlight Developer runtime befor opening Silverlight project 'project name'" with a link. If I ignore it and proceed, the .Web portion of the project will load, but not the other one, which was marked as "unavailable" in the solution explorer. If I try to download the "latest Silverlight Developer runtime" following the link, it won't install, saying "a 64 bit version is already installed". In addition, I noticed it was trying to install SL5, which I probably don't want since everything up to this point was done in 4 in my case. I haven't altered anything on my system. The only suspect I can think of is that I installed the latest MySQL (binary installer for Windows) yesterday. Could that be the culprit? Any help is appreciated. Yukun
